Babylon Posted 25 October 2012 Posted 25 October 2012 There's different variations we prefer s much richer thicker sauce , which is the standard, a more watery we call thari, and a much dryer curry we call sukha. It depends on the type of indian, all have different versions, one shouldn't assume Indian as being a collective set of people. SUKHA!!!

pSinatra Posted 25 October 2012 Posted 25 October 2012 Namasté just off Fosse Road. One the street that connects Narborough Road and Fosse Road South, but I can't remember it's name. Hinckley Road - near the police station. Go there all the time. Love it!!
Dr The Singh Posted 25 October 2012 Posted 25 October 2012 I except that. I can differentiate between Hindu, Sikh and Muslim but I don't know enough to separate those people into different groups. In Leicester for example most hindus are from the gujurat, most sikhs in general not just Leicester are from punjab, most muslims are from pakistani gujurat or pakistani mirpur. Most indian restaurants that serve meat are bangladeshi, veggie ones tend to be gujurati, the dhaba style are sikh vegetarians. It's complicated, hence I hate the work asian as it's alot of different people, and I hate being called indian, for my personal reasons!!

martyn Posted 26 October 2012 Posted 26 October 2012 I know what you're saying Singhy. When I talk to my Asian customers about Rogan Josh or Jalfrezi they say (or claim at least) that they haven't heard of them. I have eaten in Indian people's houses and what they make me is more like chicken in spicy oxo gravy. It's okay but I prefer a thicker sauce, it's what you're used to I suppose. I went to Kerala in March, saw Jalfrezi on many menus.
James. Posted 26 October 2012 Posted 26 October 2012 When I was in Vashisht they had a slightly different spelling of Jalfrezi.
Dr The Singh Posted 26 October 2012 Posted 26 October 2012 When I was in Vashisht they had a slightly different spelling of Jalfrezi. Must be quite touristy, or picked up some britiish ciusine as chicken tikka masala is a british product. Chicken Tikka is a punjabi dish, and it's not red coloured, they would never have thought to butcher the dish like the british have.
MooseBreath Posted 26 October 2012 Posted 26 October 2012 British takeaways in not serving authentic food shocker. The nation was in outrage today as it became clear that many of the Indian and Chinese takeaways across the country are serving food that does not exactly reflect the type of food eaten in those countries. "I can't believe it," said Chinese takeaway regular ken duddle, 62, "all my life I thought these balls of processed chicken deep fried in batter and dipped in metallic pink sauce with a side of ships was exactly what Chinese people were eating day in, day out." Japanese takeaway regular Finnegan, 16, from one of those funny little countries that leech off of England, said, "oh trust me darling, when I was in Japan the food was nothing like you find in yo sushi. People who haven't been to Japan don't know this, they actually think they are eating authentic Japanese food. They are such idiots, really. I've been to Japan and I can tell you the food is totally different." Meanwhile, British Indian Dr Singh reacted angrily to suggestions that Indian takeaway food on the UK may be similar to that found in India, "I'M INDIAN SO I KNOW. YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT. I'VE BEEN TO INDIA SO MANY TIMES I KNOW WAY MORE ABOUT THIS THAN YOU. SERIOUSLY, THIS IS MY CHANCE TO ASSERT AUTHORITY ON A SUBJECT AND GANEESHA KNOWS, I'M TAKING IT."
James. Posted 26 October 2012 Posted 26 October 2012 Yeah it was pretty touristy, but that wasn't really the point, I just quite liked the idea of a JALFRENZY. Nevermind.

Some bloke walked in to my local chinese and asked the lad behind the counter what he would normally eat from the menu as he wanted something authentic. The lad replied "nothing it's all shit, we don't eat stuff like this".

Webbo Posted 26 October 2012 Posted 26 October 2012 The 2 in Syston (red rose + spice of india) are pretty good too if you are out that way and don't fancy going into town. Haven't been to the Spice for years, it seemed to go downhill and we had a couple of poor meals there. I only went to the Red Rose once and it was if someone had poured a bucket of sugar into my food it was so over sweet.

Phube Posted 26 October 2012 Posted 26 October 2012 I think I wrote this in the other 'Best Indian in Leicester' thread. But I do find Dr the Singh's (and some Asian friends I have) attitude to Indian restaurants a bit odd. With only two reasons I can find: 1) Their parents/wives/grandparents/dads etc. are genuinely better at cooking food than professional chefs. or 2) They have grown up with a particular style of food (family/regional) and their palate can't/won't accept another interpretation of it. (Like the Irish descendants at my work in Cov who don't believe it's a meal unless it has potatoes in it, and can't accept new fangled thing like rice or pasta). I mean; my Grandma's Steak and Kidney Pie was the best and her Bubble and Squeak has never been bettered (IMO), but that doesn't stop me going out and ordering them at restaurants... I don't complain that it's not 'authentic' bubble and squeak etc. Seriously I'm not having a go, just I really find it interesting...

Webbo Posted 27 October 2012 Posted 27 October 2012 That cooking show thats on satutrday morning had an indian actress on and the head guy asked her where the best place to get an indian meal is in England, she said Leicester. He then asked why she did not say Birmingham and she said no, Leicester! do not pass go, go straight to Leicester. The Indian chef on today has just said the same.
