Rooney's goal is one of the most over-rated goals ever. It's only because it was in a derby game (and by Rooney) that it gets such credit.

Great goal, but not one of the best.

The occasion is part of what makes a goal great though.

Zidane's goal in the 2002 Champions League final was a great goal in its own right, but it only lives on in legend because of the occasion and the audience in front of which it was displayed.

He is a hero in Paris.

I've seen quite a few of his matches this year for PSG - they are always on the TV. He is quite extraordinary and more than that he's a leader of players on the field.

Good technique but not a good goal - there was no goalkeeper to beat! It was no different to when defenders do overhead kicks to clear the ball, it's just this time it ended up in the goal :S

It depends what you mean by over-rated.

In terms of what he's actually capable of he's clearly one of the greatest players of all time and I don't think many people would argue that.

But people like Maradona, Zidane, Ronaldo, Messi, Figo and the like are consistently superb and have had careers full of plaudits for that reason. Ibra's a bit like Totti, he's clearly got it in him to be an all time legend but he just doesn't have the mental characteristics to have really changed the world with his career.

I like to think of him as football's Gavin Henson.

Unfair on Totti that, Totti's main problem was/is that he's Roma through and through, he was consistantly superb also just didn't always have the talent or a title winning side around him.

Sergio Aguero's goal against QPR last season still gives me shivers now when I see it. Imagine the buzz!

Really? Rooney hit it with his shin, he clearly miskicked it.

This, horrrible connection, farce that it was even nominated for best Premier League goal of all time never mind the fact it won it.

Never understood why people rate rooney's goal so highly and the fact some think it was better than the goal last night strikes of english bias.

Rooney barely had to move, not only wasnt it the greatest goal lol, there have been many better overhead kicks.

I actually preferred berbatovs overhead kick in the same season to complete his hat trick against Liverpool.

Was far harder to do, teed himself up and picked out the top corner with his 2nd touch.

Absolutely I said that too, far better....the one where he controlled it on his knee then overhead kick, great goal.

Outrageous goal but nowhere near the best I've ever seen. Had no goalkeeper to beat for a start

But that's because the opportunity was only there as Joe Hart had come out and was close in proximity at the time of the strike. It's totally legitimate - it's not like the keeper was down or slipped or anything

It was poor defending and an awful goalkeeping decision by Hart, but I don't think it can be denied as a fantastic goal

And when people say "fluke" - can't that be attributed to almost any goal? Ibrahimovic had a chance to strike from what seemed like an unlikely area, he timed the kick perfectly, obviously struck exactly as hard and as accurately as he planned, and got it perfectly on target. Even landed over the line. An incredible goal, and totally deserving - he pulled England to pieces last night

No mate you've misunderstood me, it was an incredible goal and great awareness but for me it's not even close to the best goal ever. The technique and audacity to even try it was a pleasure to see but he didn't half profit from

Joe hart and an inexperienced back line. Much prefer to see a goal where the keeper is clutching at thin air from a 40 yard rocket or a goal like Knockaert's 2nd against Huddersfield.

Oh and on Rooney's goal, overrated just like the player himself. All about the occasion and not the technique. Muzzy's was far better

Great finish but no chance is it anything like the 'best ever'. It was audacious but he had no keeper to beat and basically just thumped it back over his head.

On another note, bicycle kicks that are taken from a cross (Muzzy's, Rooney's, Falcao's) are so much more technically impressive than ones where you've tee'd it up on your knee (Berbatov, Rivaldo). It's obviously not 'easy' but once you've controlled the ball (if you're doing it right) you're volleying a ball that has reached it's highest point of motion and effectively isn't moving.

Maybe, I think berbatov's was more difficult technically than rooneys, rooney was unmarked side on to goal, berb was marked with his back to goal, berb had to first control a cross on his knee and still generate the force to place the ball whilst still being marked....both great goals but I think berb's is superior.

We're all missing the point here: If the English media don't focus on a speculative overhead kick into an open goal at the end of a friendly, then they might have to discuss what went wrong with England's defensive work in the second half.

Ah sorry, was misunderstood - think I brushed over the comments without reading yours properly

Not the "best" goal ever, but definitely one of the most entertaining - much like Tim Howard's 100-yarder last season against Bolton (goal wasn't intended, but a brilliant 5 seconds of entertainment nonetheless)

Good...very good...but better than this one? I don't think so...

I tend to prefer really great team goals, in any case (Knockaert to Nugent to net was pretty good last Saturday)
