FoxesAreBlue Posted 26 November 2012 Posted 26 November 2012 I don't know I always still thought it was based on sporting achievement? Agree with Kingfox, Rutherford and Brownlie should both be in. I think it's just sort of turns into an achievement contest. On that basis I assume my nomination was lost in the post for actually finishing two marathons this year!
Corky Posted 26 November 2012 Posted 26 November 2012 Of course it's about achievement. Otherwise Jimmy Bullard and Balotelli would've been up for the award before.

Yep no offence to Rory McIlroy he is my favourite golfer, but everyone who should be nominated this year should of taken part in the Olympics. Even Murray of course took part won a gold and silver and capped it off by winning the US, so he deserves. For me McIlroy and Katherine Grainger are the oddest choices, she maybe an Olympic legend and done a lot towards the Olympics, but of the success and story of Greg Rutherford and being part of that historic night, and what Alistair Brownlee has put himself through for years of training, all those three different things and ends up winning gold for it, but doesn't get nominated for me is a joke. All the other nominations in my opinion, are right and deserved.

McIlroy didn't have the chance to compete at the Olympics because golf wasn't in it. Does that make his success lesser than the Olympians? Of course not! He's had a fantastic year, won a major, became world number 1 and was a member of a team that pull off one of the greatest comebacks of all time. He's well worth his place on the list. I agree on Grainger though. I'm not a fan of this award being given out as some kind of lifetime achievement award like it was to Ryan Giggs a couple of years back. It's for the achievements of the past year and Grainger's success is no greater than many others at this year Olympics such as Rutherford, Trott, Kenney, Pendleton, Copeland, Brownlee etc. She won a gold just like them, surely Charlotte Dujardin who two golds in the Equestrian was more worthy. Seems the only reason Grainger has made the list is because she came close a few times and kept trying. Like I say it's not a lifetime achievement award.

It was Olympic year, Olympics make legends, Olympics turns minor and unknown athletes into stars, and for me Greg Rutherford fits in that category. Nobody expected him to win Gold, i'm sure many people hadn't even heard of him. He came out of nowhere, and on the back of injuries galore he was unsure he would even make the Olympic games. He was part of that historic night, the best night British Sport has ever witnessed. While like I said Alistair Brownlee does basically three events, swimming then cycling then running in my opinion is far superior than most things. If he got nominated im sure he wouldn't win probably wouldn't even make top three, but I for one would of voted for him. For everything he does and the amount of hard work he has put to get that gold medal, I am shocked and pretty saddened that he isn't shortlisted. Yes Rory won another major, World Number One and part of the Ryder Cup team; however for me Olympians achieved more, Olympians became heroes. Rory will get another chance, Rory will most likely have a stormer in 2013 and add yet more majors, while for me with these Olympians you probably won't hear of some until another four years, or they don't take part in as many events, as the likes of Murray and McIlroy do.

Absolute bullshit. As I've said the award is for sporting achievement in the year 2012. The Olympics being in London, the excitement around it and us doing quite well should not dampen the achievement of those that weren't able to compete in that event but were ultimately successful themselves. I actually think 11 of the 12 are more than worthy of a place on the list and the only one I would question, as I've previously mentioned is Grainger, as she seems to have got there on the basis she failed numerous times before. I suppose you could argue her persistence to keep coming back should be praised, but her place could just have easily gone to Rutherford, Brownlee, Trott, Kenny and many more. You clearly are impressed by what Brownlee has achieved and that's you're opinion but I don't think he's so amazing you should be shocked and saddened he's been left off. He's one of many gold medal winners who could have made that list but was unlucky not too. People who have been missed off who could easily have made the list are: Charlotte Dujardin - double gold medallist in the Equestrian Jason Kenny - double gold medallist in cycling Laura Trott - double gold medallist in cycling Victoria Pendleton - gold and silver in cycling Ed Clancy - gold and bronze in rowing Helen Glover and Heather Standing - first British gold medallists of the games Timothy Baillie and Etienne Scott - Canoeing gold Philip Hindes - cycling gold Anna Watkins - rowing gold alongside nominee Katherine Grainger Katherine Copeland and Sophie Hoskings - rowing gold (Copelands reaction to winning was one of the moments of the games for me) Danielle King - cycling gold Joanna Rowsell - cycling gold Greg Rutherford - long jump gold Jade Jones - taekwondo gold Ed McKeever - canoeing gold Luke Campbell - boxing gold Anthony Joshua - boxing gold There are a few more Olympic gold medallists, and I haven't even started on the Paralympics yet. You can see how difficult it was for the selectors to pick just 12, so to bemoan the leaving off of Brownlee is a bit pointless because there are literally 40 other people who could have had that spot.
Zingari Posted 27 November 2012 Posted 27 November 2012 Spoilt for choice this year and so many really good contenders but I'd go for Mo Farah .
Manwell Pablo Posted 27 November 2012 Posted 27 November 2012 Should be a decent watch for once, probably the most succesful year for British Sport since I've been alive.
Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 27 November 2012 Posted 27 November 2012 I'd have to go for Wiggins - incredible accomplishments, and a proper likeable no-nonsense bloke Closely followed by Farrah, what a character
kingfox Posted 27 November 2012 Posted 27 November 2012 What a load of shit. Only one person is not Olympic based and that's Rory, so many Olympians deserve to be nominated instead of him. He will get another chance of winning Sports Personality, while some of these gold medalists won't get nominated until another four years. Wouldn't be surprised if Rory won it in a few years time, but of what Olympians achieved I think they deserve more recognition than Rory McIlroy. Absolute bullshit. As I've said the award is for sporting achievement in the year 2012. Of course you can choose loads of people, but do the likes of Katherine Grainger make people stand up and take note and vote, for me she isn't popular enough regardless of her past history in the Olympics. Like I said Alistair Brownlee impresses me, Swimming, Cycling then running is far superior than most Sports in my opinion, the guy deserves more recognition in what he has put himself through and what he has achieved. Yes you can say the same thing for the likes of Victoria Pendleton and Laura Trott; however they only Cycle, Brownlee does that plus two other things; however that's my opinion I think he should of been shortlisted, you obviously don't and his achievement doesn't appeal to you.
davieG Posted 27 November 2012 Posted 27 November 2012 Lost a lot of interest in this once they started nominating rather than letting the public choose from everyone.
Zingari Posted 27 November 2012 Posted 27 November 2012 Lost a lot of interest in this once they started nominating rather than letting the public choose from everyone. Davie Gibson was never going to win it . Let it go .
davieG Posted 27 November 2012 Posted 27 November 2012 Davie Gibson was never going to win it . Let it go . I voted for him ever year as well, it's just so unfair!!!
Jon the Hat Posted 27 November 2012 Posted 27 November 2012 Mo by a country mile. What an amazing year it has been.
Amin Posted 27 November 2012 Posted 27 November 2012 I'm not sure how you can say anyone should win by a country mile considering the quality of the nominees.
The Blur Posted 27 November 2012 Posted 27 November 2012 Got be Wiggins- two massive achievements and to maintain his performance level in two different disciples is just brilliant, Don't forget he comfortably won his Olympic event.
Guest MattP Posted 27 November 2012 Posted 27 November 2012 Frankel should have been in. (I'm serious btw)
Mack Posted 28 November 2012 Posted 28 November 2012 Who do I think should win? Wiggins. Massive achievement and he's a character also. However do enough people understand the Tour and just how much hard work he has put in? Maybe not. Who do I think will win? Mo Farah.

Jimothy Posted 28 November 2012 Posted 28 November 2012 http://uk.eurosport....-162918962.html Ryan Giggs in 2009 needs adding to that list.
City_4_Life Posted 28 November 2012 Posted 28 November 2012 Frankel should have been in. (I'm serious btw) Yeh, hopefully he will get some sort of recognition on the night. Both him and Sir Henry deserve it.
Kitchandro Posted 28 November 2012 Posted 28 November 2012 In 1970 Tony Jacklin won the US Open (his second Major in as many seasons) while Bobby Moore led England thrillingly close to defending their World Cup crown. We went out in the Quarter-finals after blowing a 2-goal lead It's sad that it took a Grand National win for Tony McCoy to win it. If 1997 was such a pointless year for sport then he should have won it then.
