What a load of bollocks. Wonder what the percentage was like during WW2 for evacuees moving away from london. Kids of today have sod all to worry about in the grand scheme of things.

People are a lot more materialistic, needing to have the next big thing. You eventually grow up and realise how daft it all is.

The country needs to stop being so namby pamby

See, the yoof of today can't even quote proper.

You say this like it's a bad thing. Thankfully we've progressed away from the horror of global war and what it does to everyone. Hopefully we'll continue to do so, because if we return there it'll mean there won't be a civilisation left to worry about.

Of course its a good thing in that respect. Just proves our counyry and kids get softer by the generation.

Im only just above this age bracket, and yeh Ive felt shit when i lost my job, on the dole for 4months. When you couldn't keep up with the latest trends because some people had silver spoons in their mouths. Not being able to afford to take a bird out cos pocket money was shit. Not being able to bring random girls home cos mums a bible basher.

Its part of growing up, everyone will have been through this or similar. Teenagers of today are no different.

They need to be told to crack on n 'man up' what they dont need is some left wing organisation set up to help them.

I know my problems seem trivial to some peoples real problems (caring after sick parents so cannot attend school) but i bet you the larger proportion have 'problems' akin to mine

Life is supposed to be hard.

I do feel for some of the youth now though, it's a pretty shit country to be born in and I'm not surprised to see in that table we have dropped from 7th to 28th in the space of just 25 years, I expect that to drop even further in the next 25.

They get plied with qualifications they don't need and are often quite useless in the scheme of things and get forced into ridiculous career induction meetings at a strangly young age now (I think 14 I read), the enjoyment certainly seems to have gone out of a lot of peoples life and the pressure to behave like an adult so early doesnt help.

Kind of agree with MattP ( :( )

I came into my career with an English O level and enthusiasm and desire to help others.

I am now an operational manager with 27 years under my belt. What's changed,I think, is that now the organisation only recruit those with suitable qualifications to take them to degree level. Fail and there is no job. A lot of good young people are therefore by-passed and intimidated into not applying.

It's nice to be considered a professional and have letters after ones name but the upshot of that is, like many other jobs, it has changed and become more pressurised and less enjoyable.

The OP is also about young people coping with the pressures of modern life but hasn't it always been thus? Things ain't wot thay used to be.

Posted

That's kind of what I was saying in my earlier post.

The focus has been on getting young people qualifications but at the expense of actually equipping them with useful, transferable skills. When a huge number of people all have more or less the same qualifications - they no longer mean anything.

We need to stop saying "every kid must leave school with at least x number of qualifications" and start saying "every kid must leave school having learned the skills needed to be a useful and effective employee / citizen."

I'm 17, at college studying plumbing and heating, tried for months on end to find an apprenticeship, no one was taking on. I now work behind the bar at a working men's club at the weekend and the odd weekday, I love it, I don't pay for transport, as its within 5 minutes from me. I get a decent wage for my age anyways, over £125 a week, a lot more recently because of D/T over Xmas.

But I'd do anything for a job in the career I'm looking to pursue.

Any tips for unblocking my toilet?

No, really

This is completely true, really struggling recently. Just when I get myself on track something comes up to bite me on the arse. Got a letter from the tax office saying they've messed my tax up and I owe them £356 and if I don't pay within 15 days 3% interest will be added each day. Got £70 to myself this month! Would be better of on JSA lol

How are you serving behind a bar if you're only 17? Bit naughty.

Tell me about it mate, every month there's something that comes up. I should be just about back on an even keel by payday this month, right in time for the Mrs' birthday, my brother's birthday, my grandad's 80th birthday, Valentines Day and mine and the Mrs' one year anniversary... February's not going to be a good month!

The HMRC is an absolute shambles.

Very quick to demand money but very very slow to deal with correspondence explaining why it is not owed.

Last year I got a new tax code sent through at least ten times, possibly more. That is just ridiculous.

This place is overflowing with stupid today.

Because people voice opinions that you don't share. Maybe you should leave and the place would be less stupid.

Really, that is not a problem, if you're skint they will understand, and if not then they don't deserve anything, especially fvcking valentines day.

My girlfriend has a saying on her wall, 'life is simple, it's just not easy' I sort of disagree, life is easy as long as you understand just that.

We get so stressed and worked up about such trivial things as birthdays and football, none of it really matters, as long as you surround yourself with the right people they will always be there to help you when you need it, and you find these people by being there to help them when they need it.

Yeah life may be tougher for some now than it was, and sudden tax demands can come out the blue, (please don't get a pay day loan to help pay that, swallow your pride and borrow some money of your family or a friend) but it is still an amazing gift, and in the UK we are luckier than so many billions around the world.

Life is simple, spend less than you earn and put some away for a rainy day, be good to other people and they will be good to you and don't forget to have fun, you only get one shot at this.

I'm used to being skint, so I don't mind really. I'd much rather spend the cash, see my family on their birthdays and spoil the missus a bit and be a bit skint at the end of the month. She deserves it up for putting up with me anyway. She won't be expecting diamonds or anything like that, she just likes it when I put a bit of thought into presents - I'll probably spend a fair bit on her for her birthday, get her a bit of perfume and a card for V Day and then we'll go out for dinner for the anniversary, shouldn't be too bad. Like you say - you only live once, so you may as well enjoy it.

Things are looking up this year anyway, got a payrise at work recently, my career development loan which I took out for my masters gets paid off in June (£160 extra a month!) and once the sale of my Gran's house goes through and I get my inheritance, me and the missus should finally have enough for a house deposit. Onwards and upwards...

Personally i think there are a multitude of issues:

a) Materialism leads to people falling into social poverty even though they have a decent income in real terms.

b) A lack of unskilled work.

c) Third world education system.

d) Poor economic climate.

Probably others too.

At last something we agree on in this thread - well not all the points but it's a start.

Not so easy for the older ones either who never had the opportunity to take countless qualifications while still at school and go uni and college no matter how thick you are. I was at a secondary modern which did not qualify for O and A levels for lower forms. 30 years in hosiery which has disappeared as an industry and seven years in security. I have gained more qualifications in the last 18 month whilst being out of work than I did when working and at scvholl. But if every svchool leaver are leaving with the same grades it is harder because there is nothing now for low acheivers. No engineering, hosiery or mining and even non-skilled jobs are going to those young people with better grades.

but the 1988 study was a joke....certainly very little research went into it so chances are we havent dropped anywhere near as much, but these sort of reports are so difficult to examine properly, its an indication of how things are but for most its meaningless.

Agreed these types of tables mean nothing. What stats were used? I always find it funny how stats are used as facts - which they are - when they can always be argued using other stats. TBH facts are not as reliable as people make out.
