This guy should find a job.

In the off season yes

I've said it before, but you are NOT in a position to pick and choose when you want to work.

Job/life/career is priority number 1.

Football number 2.

1 will help out 2. Do you get what I'm saying? Get established in number 1, and soon enough, you'll be ready to stand on your own two feet and make time for number 2.

We get that you love football and obviously want to watch it as much as possible, but I don't think YOU get how important it could be to give up seeing football temporarily.

lol

Just fvck off, Lamby. You can't complain about not getting a job and then rule out days on which you won't work.

Every time Lamby complains about not having a job I'm going to increase his warning level. I will do this until he accepts he might have to work Saturdays if he's applying for jobs in the retail sector where SATURDAY IS THE BUSIEST DAY.

Its all a bit bizarre. I'd rather work in a shop than watch Charlton anyway?

That's ignoring the fact I'd be paid to work in the shop but HAVE TO PAY to watch Charlton

I

Working in the museum shop and doing stock replenishment/merchandising and all that, which I've done before. £140 a week

Hang on a minute, so it would be 9:30 - 5:00 for 6 days a week? Minus a 1hr lunchbreak, that's 39 hours a week, which would make your hourly pay about £3.60 - surely that's not legal?!

EDIT: Actually, I just looked it up:

21 and over £6.19

18 to 20 £4.98

Under 18 £3.68

Apprentice £2.65

Jesus - who'd be an apprentice now?! That's absolutely scandalous.

Also, I agree with everyone in this thread - any job you take is still going to earn you more than you're getting on the dole and if you have to give up football then that's something you're going to have to do for the time being.

If I was your dad and I found out that you more or less refused a job because you didn't want to work on a Saturday, I'd chuck your season ticket in the bin and tell you to sort out your own football tickets.

I generally think the pay is abysimal in the UK as it is, i know it's all comparetive etc but the cost of living isn't that different to Australia but the wages are worse over there.

Mind you my friend from Ireland just moved over here and she thinks it's really expensive over here compared to Ireland which i found laughable.

That is what I was suggesting for the conditions quoted.

MP's are mostly arseholes but it's not a free ride, they do actually have to work quite hard.

Anyway, if it's so cushy - surely you should be standing for election? Sounds like you're on your soap box quite a lot.

My best mate recently moved back to the UK from Australia, he's been living over there for four or five years. He had a fairly decent job at Action Aid and he's taken the equivilent job over here at Oxfam and he's on about £10,000 less apparently - Australia really does sound like the place to be at the minute in terms of jobs and economy.

When i was looking for jobs in the UK, it pretty much meant taking on average a 40% wage reduction. I think it also helps cos our $ is so good it used to be 30 pence to the $ now it's just over 60 pence to the $ it's a big difference.

You have always got to make time for a number 2, one of life's little pleasures.

I should have said you can sit down and make time for number 2.

Just to clarify, I have never stood up and done number 2.

a) because it's just silly and would cause a lot of mess and b) I'm a West Stand willy puller.

Lamby you are tragic mate. Sort yourself out and have some pride in yourself. You will not get a job in retail not working on Saturdays, EVER. It's like being a footballer and saying you can't play during the weekends. Ludicrous.

Posted

Turning jobs down cause you don't want to work Saturdays. They should stop giving you dole money.

That might give you a bit more of an incentive than to laze around being a bum.

Posted

Perhaps you could do maybe a nightschool class in SAGE or SAS etc, which would move you closer to having a more ''office hours'' type job?

There are other things outside of retail that you can look at if you wish to keep your weekends free. Maybe the short term pain of internship could push you closer to more of a "9-5" career?

Maybe you could start your own business doing something? In the short term youll work more obviously, (youll probably work more full stop) but at least youve got flexibility and it doesnt seem like working for corporate because whatever you put in, you get out.

Always options

I have a job now. Slightly different to what I was hoping. The intervier said she had two places to fill and 20 hours to allocate. But there were 7 or 8 applicants. They all have skills that would be useful (graphic designer web developer filming etc) and she want to give all a chance, so I only have five hours. I don't mind this too much. It mean I will at least be doing some paid work. May help with getting other part time work.

I may be covering the Homeless football World Cup. She was telling me that she did it last year and travelled all over even went to Man Utd's training ground. Expenses paid. I just have to put five hours down PW whether it is writing or attending a venue for events. At the end of the month hours can be carried over so it is always about 20.

I have also said I'll cover some of the Comedy Festival so any entry fees will be reimbursed. Unfortunately drinks don't count.

It's a six month contract then reviewed. Hoping to start Feb 1st. It will take me up to July which is when my pension credits could start.

I asked if I needed to do more and she said just what I'm doing now. There are training course I can go on which may be useful.
