Lineker's Left Foot Posted 15 February 2013 Author Posted 15 February 2013 Also not sure if you're all aware but wasn't Pat Bonner on our books before he went to Celtic???
Thracian Posted 15 February 2013 Posted 15 February 2013 Billy McKay. The lad always struck me as an excellent all-round footballer who's main limitation was that he seemed a bit on the small side to cope with the physical aspects of Championship-level football. Now he looks so sharp and alert in and around the box even if he does miss the occasional sitter! McKay was a workaholic who saw the pictures and could pass the ball short or long. His running off the ball was excellent, he released passes quickly, he could score goals and was always asking questions of defenders. On top of that he had an excellent attitude and temperament and made life easy for the players around him. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_McKay Schlupp should definitely have been played more. And I don't mean instead of Konchesky but as well as. Konchesky has been a generally excellent left-back for us. Yes, he's had his difficult days and sometimes gets caught out against pace or when he's been high up the pitch supporting our attack. But, generally he's done well and Schlupp hadn't quite got the experience and knowhow to take over anyway because he was still a novice as a defender. But there were lots of occasions when Schlupp could have been involved for up to the last half-hour of a game and been given some of the experience so vital to him. Instead he had one bad game and we did the last thing we should have done by effectively casting him into the wilderness. I've said it before that i don't think our club has the first idea of how to put the finishing touches to our most promising Academy players, partly because there's no structure to do so but also because we don't seem to have the psychology necessary or the nerve. One or two have mentioned Ashley Chambers and there's no doubt he had both pace and talent. But injuries did for him at the wrong time. Others should have been used more at various times - not because they were necessarily outstanding prospects but because they were either better than what we had or because they were the same sort of standard at the time and the resident incumbent was going nowhere but downhill (Horsfield being an example). Gradel was pitifully wasted of course and I always thought Ryan Beswick a far better footballer than he was given credit for. As for current players Futacs remains a mystery. He has skill and technique and can hardly be blamed for misfiring on his one full appearance in a long while. But he's clearly not done himself any favours, is not rated and I have to wonder why he was signed at all.
RonnieTodger Posted 15 February 2013 Posted 15 February 2013 DJ Campbell, even though it was inevitable that he'd be sold to Blackpool. It was the one time he looked sharp for us, when we were under Sousa.
kingfox Posted 15 February 2013 Posted 15 February 2013 Sergio Hellings is incredible, his wikipedia page takes some reading now

dynamark Posted 15 February 2013 Posted 15 February 2013 Ever hear the saying 'legs like bobby kellard'usually referring to ladies Schlupp was going well with sven until knee injury
Guest Bilo Posted 15 February 2013 Posted 15 February 2013 Might as well take the piss a bit with this one. Let's see how much shit we can add before it gets removed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergio_Hellings
Tielemans63 Posted 16 February 2013 Posted 16 February 2013 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergio_Hellings "Marco Van Basten said of him in 2007 "He's a bit of me, a bit of Gullit, a pinch of Rijkaard with a touch of Cruyff thrown in" Sergio Hellings is currently favourite to win the 2013 FIFA Ballon d'Or Sergio Hellings is an anagram of Oi Serg Hellings!" Absolutely brilliant! Well done to those responsible.
Tielemans63 Posted 16 February 2013 Posted 16 February 2013 Russell Hoult was unlucky to be here when the mighty Kevin Poole was around and tbf it did take a while for his career to get going but it's shame he didn't play more often for City as he's a Leicestershire lad.
SystonFox Posted 16 February 2013 Posted 16 February 2013 N'Guessan had him on my shirt. played 8 games and left. SRSLY? He must be your biggest fan!!!
Arriba Los Zorros Posted 16 February 2013 Posted 16 February 2013 Yuki Abe. Was very underrated by most whilst he was here, and OK maybe he was not best suited to English football, but was a class act, would have liked to see him starting more, and an effort made to keep him at LCFC.

He was on a right wedge if I remember correctly? I think he fell to business as well as his physical weakness.
Raw Dykes Posted 16 February 2013 Posted 16 February 2013 He was on a right wedge if I remember correctly? I think he fell to business as well as his physical weakness. I think you're right. I'm sure £40k a week was mentioned. Not a bad player, but no way worth that much.
Jugsi Posted 16 February 2013 Posted 16 February 2013 I was going to say Zsolt Lackzo, came off the bench against Liverpool a few years ago in the champs league. First team regular for Sampdoria last year and 21 caps for Hungary. Gradel the biggest one though. Whatever happened to Trevor 'don't call me Bruno' Benjamin, haha.
Guest Bilo Posted 16 February 2013 Posted 16 February 2013 'Hellings was forced to leave Ajax as he had developed a serious addiction to cannabis, which he thought may affect his cardiovascular fitness, so he joined English side Arsenal for €8 million on October 11, 2002, signing a five-year contract.[1] Hellings's record-breaking stint at Arsenal where they did not concede in 33 consecutive games which he started in was cut short after complaining he was sick of having Nwankwo Kanu stealing his hair conditioner during showers after games. There is much speculation that this is what led to Hellings shaving his afro off during the end of his stint at Arsenal, a look he has maintained to this day. Others believe it may have been due to male pattern baldness, but only Hellings will know. Arsene Wenger was aparently so upset at Hellings decision that he urinated in Kanu's water bottle in training the next week.' Own up!
Guest MattP Posted 16 February 2013 Posted 16 February 2013 Hats off to the clown behind this Marco Van Basten said of him in 2007 "He's a bit of me, a bit of Gullit, a pinch of Rijkaard with a touch of Cruyff thrown in" Genius. Guilty along with the WC comment. The page looks superb now

ScoutMan Posted 16 February 2013 Posted 16 February 2013 Fryatt and David Connoly. Both played well for us but ended up being shipped out unfairly really. Connoly due to money issues at the time and Fryatt because his name wasn't big enough. Both went on to score 15+ the seasons after leaving Fryatt to hull and Connolly for Sunderland who I think went back up that year. Connolly was sold to Wigan
ScoutMan Posted 16 February 2013 Posted 16 February 2013 Scott Taylor was instrumental during Martin O'Neills early reign then picked up a serious injury. When he recovered he was still on our pay roll for 18 months and hardly featured. Was released and joined Wolves. Stan Collymore as we all knew broke his leg under O'Neills tensure. Then under Peter Taylor he fell out with Benjamin and Taylor decieded to get rid of Collymore because of an appearance bonus. Collymore's replacement Dean Sturridge scored a few goals for City under Taylor but the following season he fell out with Harry Bassett so he got rid of him. Tom English was used as a swap deal for Jimmy Melrose - bad mistake. Theo never really got a chance but was competing within a top midfield. Jari Rantanen was home sick and Pleat didnt really help him out. Martin Keown and Steve Howey both fell out with Micky Adams so he banished them. Pegguy Arphexead a defanate shout although he was competing along side Tim Flowers. Phil Gilchrist - Taylor was quick to get rid of. O'Neill didnt rate Steve Corica either if I remember righly.
