100%. It helps that 200k residents in Derby all head there for shopping and entertainment and nightlife. So.much for being rivals. Derby boosts Nottingham's reach from 600k to approaching a million.

I think the TV stations did it. It's amazing what that does for an economy. And Central / BBC setting up there was the same time as them winning European cups and enjoying a ridiculously high profile. That swung the city upwards. Prior to that, the cities were pretty much the same.

Good point about Derby. Their city is a couple of tiers below either here or Notts, we maybe have the equivalent with Northamptonshire but it’s certainly not those numbers. Plus, they go to Milton Keynes quite a bit now.

Whilst I'm on this thread, I watched these videos the other day. Not sure if they've been posted tho so sorry if it's a duplicate. I genuinely learnt a lot and the background shots of the city as it was in 1998 are enjoyable.

There's more in the series on this channel, too.

Had a quick visit back to Leicester mid-week and have to say I was quite impressed compared to my memories of old. Had a coffee in a lovely place on Cank Street - Chloe Goumet - and although I resisted the cakes due to gluten issues, I thought the place was marvellous. Good to see shops functioning again in the Arcades which is another hidden gem of Leicester.  As I was based near Welford Road I popped into the Bricklayers Arms (well it's now called the FoxHut bar). Seemed nice enough but the place was empty, hope that's not always the case. Couple of busier options on Millstone Lane. Plenty of pedestrian zones in what seems to be marketed now as "Old Leicester" but I have to admit to being surprised by cyclists whizzing by in adjacent cycle lanes.

Major gripe of mine is that EMA that is In Leicestershire is still often labelled NOTTINGHAM AIRPORT.

I have to say, I thought that was a point of contention a decade or so ago and it was agreed that it would remain EMA as it mainly served Leicester, Nottingham and Derby.

I haven't seen any reference to "Nottingham" airport for years.

That's a surprise as the flight codes for EMA are EMA are they not?

Always had to take some planning to get in.

Did use to be full of absolute weapons about 10 years ago. It is a blow for the city to lose another nightspot.

Yep. I'm guessing that people abroad will have heard of Nottingham because of Robin Hood (whose airport is at Doncaster lol)

Terrace always used to have weirdly sound doorstaff if memory serves me right. Always felt a bit unique in its time in Leicester, there were no other real big bars that you could stay in late-ish that felt like a club but weren't a club. Feels like the crowd that should be in there these days have migrated to the top end of the high street instead

Yea that area used to be the place. There was a bar opposite upsairs at one point and fat cats and I believe Marz bar and they were all popular.

Assuming there is not much down there these days in the same category  and the road generally got a rep for violence

It’s dropped off fast. I remember two or three years ago thinking it was holding up ok but now it's really struggling.

Being completely honest I avoid town as much as possible now, it just don't feel safe in town anymore, unfortunately it doesn't help with people off their heads and homeless on every corner. Don't know how true this is but apparently police have been stripped of their powers to move homeless on.
