Baffles the hell outta me that more CO-OP’s don’t have permanent security.

Courts need to do more, too.

Police are EXTREMELY limited for resource and budget.

There aren't any prison spaces though so people know they can get away with it

The Co-Ops a funny one.Their older stores have limited selection and are relatively expensive. They remind me of shopping in the 1980s,decor and variety wise.

Yet the stores they have on A road service stations are excellent.Along with their newer shops on new build developments.

I'm not surprised Co op are failing

Co Op on London Road is a free for all. I see the same 4 or 5 characters rob it blind most weeks at some point. The other week a lad filled two baskets and staff just told him to hurry up and get out. They got rid of the security guy in the end because he wasnt allowed to challenge theives so it was pointless. The staff just routinely ask them to leave and let them take the goods, said they do nothing about it if it’s under £500 worth. Also said they are targeted about 4 times a day and lose about £7,000 a week. That's not sustainable. Exactly the same at the small Tesco near the Abberdale pub too I'm told.

Why wouldn't the shop employ a couple of proper bouncers like bars do in town?

These gormless security guards (usually look like quiet, regular Joe African dudes) with a high Viz armbands, working on minimum wage don't exactly provide a deterrent.

They'd rather lose £7000 a week than pay a decent wage to security

Leicester getting a German market this year. Original!

Will be fascinating to see the various exotica from all over the world (without a pot to piss in) chomp on overpriced bratwurst washed down with (non alcoholic) gluehwein whilst simultaneously riding electric bikes with glove warmers

And those examples are the reason why I for one, won't be attending.

Went to such an event in Manchester a few years ago. One of the worst experiences of my life. Fraught with everything I find unpleasant and objectionable.

Huge crowds of people pushing and shoving, unable to get to anything I was interested/curious about because of the huge crowds of people pushing and shoving. Unable to get a thing to eat or drink because of the huge crowds of people pushing and shoving.

A complete failure as a novelty experience.

Never again. Anywhere.

Rather go to Beirut atm than a shit UK version of a German Market.

Great memories of the Narb Co-op. Once went to get cash out there drunk out of my mind and left £40 in the cash dispenser. Good times (for one passer-by).

If they're anything like my local one these days they're peddling some of the worst produce available at Waitrose+ prices. It's no wonder people don't want to pay.

Standard New Walk now. Have already stopped cutting through Vicky Park on the way home now it's dark given the several dozen robberies there last Autumn and Winter.

Surprised this has only just made the Merc.

If the Leicester subreddit is to be believed, muggers and phone-snatching scum have been targeting people on New Walk for some time. Lawless wasteland man.

As a non Leicester resident it is a crying shame to learn that New Walk is not safe after dark. Remember seeing shows at De Montfort Hall and walking down New Walk after on way to Belmont Hotel.

I remember The Belmont when they had a disco in the basement and the chairs were made out of old half barrels.

My mate Steve would occasionally rob money from his dad's wallet and we'd spend it on a couple of pints in the Belmont on a Monday, followed by a Chinese. Always had chicken with water chestnuts and beansprouts. We felt so "soho".

No one ever seemed to go to the Belmont Monday disco except me and Steve.

Ahh, the days...

A programme of work to revamp the street has been taking place (Image: Google)

A busy city centre shopping street is set to close to drivers from this weekend. A diversion warning is now in place to motorists intending to use Granby Street.

Leicester City Council has been carrying out a series of works in the road to widen pavements and create more space for pedestrians. Now, the next phase of that is set to begin on Sunday (November 17).

The project will see the street shut between its junctions with Dover Street and Belvoir/Rutland Street to allow it to be resurfaced. Diversions for drivers will be signposted throughout the works.

The roadworks, which are expected to be in place for up to a week, are part of ongoing investment in Granby Street which also includes the restoration of the Grand Hotel and its shopfronts. The former pay and display parking bays in the street – which have been out of use for three years – have also been converted into footpaths with additional space for street cafés.

Additional on-street parking bays have been created on nearby Chatham Street, York Street and Calais Street to replace those lost on Granby Street, the council said. A final phase of work – currently planned for early next year – will permanently close the junction of Dover Street and Granby Street to traffic, which the local authority said would “help further improve pedestrian safety”. A new turning facility on Dover Street will be created to ensure that vehicles can continue to access nearby businesses and attractions, including The Little Theatre.

Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for environment and transport, said: “Granby Street is an important gateway into the city centre and a busy shopping street. These ongoing improvements will help create a more attractive route for walkers, wheelers and cyclists with more space for shoppers and café-style seating. Alongside the major heritage led investment in restoring landmark buildings, this work will help make Granby Street feel safer and more welcoming to all.”

Stoneygate is a marvel.

It’s like a suburban Kensington and it could hold its own up against anywhere lovely.
