Yeezus... what is he doing!

Recommended Posts

I've only heard Black Skinhead and quite liked it.

I did read something interesting from producer Rick Rubin though...

When and why did you join the “Yeezus†project?

Kanye came over to play me what I assumed was going to be the finished album at three weeks before the last possible delivery date.  We ended up listening to three hours of partially finished pieces.  The raw material was very strong but hadn’t yet come into focus.  Many of the vocals hadn’t been recorded yet, and many of those still didn’t have lyrics.  From what he played me, it sounded like several months more work had to be done.  I joined the project because after discussing what he had played for me, he asked if I would be open to taking all of the raw material on and help him finish it.

Can you recall a scene from the sessions that might help people understand his method in the studio?

We were working on a Sunday [the same day West attended a baby shower for girlfriend Kim Kardashian] and the album was to be turned in two days later.  Kanye was planning to go to Milan that night.  Five songs still needed vocals and two or three of them still needed lyrics.  He said, “Don’t worry, I will score 40 points for you in the fourth quarter.†In the two hours before had to run out to catch the plane, he did exactly that:  finished all lyrics and performed them with gusto.  A remarkable feat.  He had total confidence in his ability to get the job done when push came to shove.

I ****ing love the album. It starts stronger than any album I can remember for a long time with 'On Sight' which is MASSIVE. You can smell Daft Punk all over it.

New Slaves is brilliant. Black Skinhead is brilliant. Bound 2 is brilliant.

I'll admit that it dips in quality in the middle - I'm In It and Send It Up are mediocre.

But Bound 2 is a return to Kanye at his best 'One good girl is worth a thousand bitches' 'I wanna **** you hard on the sink, after that give you something to drink. Step back don't get spunk on the mink. I mean damn, what would Jeromey Romey Romey Rome think?'

Up there with 'Wolf' for album of the year so far for me.

I haven't bought a Kanye album since Graduation. I did really enjoy his first three albums. I liked the song Heartless but thought 808 and heart breaks was probably unnecessary.

Since then, I've kind of moved away from Hip hop but I'm still partial every now and then.

Is this worth getting?

Not a fan personally, after a few listens i'd say it's only closely shaded by 808 for Kanye's worst album.

Feel like he let his ego take over, it had so much potential for me but failed to live up to it, personal preference of course- but it doesn't appeal to me, far too much autotune accompanied by mediocre lyricism.

Much prefer J. Coles new album, Born Sinner is probably my favourite so far this year

It's okay, definitely let down after Cruel Summer/My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy/Watch The Throne, but there are a few quality tracks.

Best lines:

**** you and your Hampton house

I'll **** your Hampton spouse

Came on her Hampton blouse

And in her Hampton mouth

Y'all 'bout to turn shit up

I'm 'bout to tear shit down

I'm 'bout to air shit out

Now what the **** they gon' say now?

And that's why it's better to listen to foreign hip hop as you don't have to listen to the shitty lyrics......

:dunno: Everyone's opinion differs. I like the context these lyrics are in, relating to the private-prison business. These lines stand out to me, don't know why, just do.
