Renart Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 Can someone tell me why we are starting on a Wednesday? It seems really strange to me not to start on a Thursday - like the whole world is out of kilter. Is it a tv thing? SKY playing their hand? Conclusion of the text will be on Sunday (if it goes that far) and will, therefore, get a bigger tv audience? Does that work?

Guest Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 Got myself a ticket for the Sunday of the test at Old Trafford. Being able to get smashed and walk home in about 15 minutes will be brilliant

Leicesterpool Posted 7 July 2013 Posted 7 July 2013 What get's me is, the cricket gets took off freeview yet not the tennis or horse racing. The ashes should be free to watch! How can u snub Egdbaston for Chester-Le-Street?

Well until somebody rules that Sky's monopoly on sport is unlawful or passes some legislation regarding terrestrial broadcasting of nationally significant matches that's how it'll remain. The terrestrial broadcasters just don't have the cash to compete for rights in most cases.
Leicesterpool Posted 7 July 2013 Posted 7 July 2013 My plan for Wednesday is simple, find a decent pub have a nice cider and watch the cricket, if there showing it of course.

How can u snub Egdbaston for Chester-Le-Street? Because the BBC didn't want it and Channel 4 gave, in the main, poor coverage (showing Horse racing on Saturday afternoons, even Countdown on some afternoons) and the schedules meant a 10.30am start. Sky put a lot of effort into showing cricket, uninterrupted coverage and highlights packages, plus overseas tours.

I just don't know, just because the queen likes it doesn't mean we have to suffer it . Anyway come on England!
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 8 July 2013 Posted 8 July 2013 Mentally and Physically prepared over the weekend for 5 test matches of humiliation and the late nights that come with it.

Bobby Hundreds Posted 8 July 2013 Posted 8 July 2013 Just saw the Australians turning up at their hotel, staying at the Park Plaza on Maid Marion Way again.
marko Posted 8 July 2013 Posted 8 July 2013 Well until somebody rules that Sky's monopoly on sport is unlawful or passes some legislation regarding terrestrial broadcasting of nationally significant matches that's how it'll remain. The terrestrial broadcasters just don't have the cash to compete for rights in most cases. There is legislation to protect important national sporting events being shown solely on subscription television. It's called the 'Crown Jewel' list and includes events like the World Cup, European Championships, Wimbledon, Olympics, FA Final and Grand National amongst others. The events are split into two lists - events on the A list must be shown live and events on the B list are broadcast in an extended highlights package. The Ashes used to be protected under 'Crown Jewel' status, but bizarrely it was taken off. However, I believe the list is going to be reviewed again this year so it may make a return. He's a downloadable Government pdf if you want to read a bit more - www.parliament.uk/briefing-papers/SN00802.pdf‎
Bobby Hundreds Posted 8 July 2013 Posted 8 July 2013 I thought home Ashes tests were put back on the list, and will be on terrestrial TV again from 2016.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 8 July 2013 Posted 8 July 2013 Maybe not, looks like the ruling was deferred until this year. Sky do a much better job than the beeb/ITV/Ch4 would anyway.

Nothing to do with not wanting it; they simply can't afford to pay the money Sky do for unprotected events.
Guest MattP Posted 8 July 2013 Posted 8 July 2013 I'll be absolutely fuming if the cricket coverage gets taken off sky. Best sporting coverage in the world. Even more so if its put back onto that exortion liberal racket that is the BBC.

Also, I know not everyone has Sky or can afford it, but it's very accessible in reality. Many pubs or sports bars will be showing it live and you're never that far from one, so you can easily buy a drink and sit and enjoy the cricket.
