theessexfox Posted 5 January 2014 Posted 5 January 2014 I should be used to waking up to ridiculous scorelines, but I didn't see that coming. Jesus wept.
Corky Posted 5 January 2014 Posted 5 January 2014 I'm afraid to say I think they deserved 5-0,they have looked much better in every department. We bottled it.Only Stokes and maybe Broad can walk through that terminal with their heads held high. Of course, no disputing the whitewash, they've trounced us in all matches. I don't believe this England side is anywhere near as bad as it has been playing and the Aussies so good. We've not even turned up for one Test, disgraceful. We should have enough about us to win or draw one at the least.
Matt Posted 5 January 2014 Posted 5 January 2014 How can you say that about the same team who beat them 3-0 in the summer? Something clearly not quite right though, absolute disgrace Oh come on, right you can't take it away from them it's a fact we did beat them 3-0 in the summer but let's have abit of honesty 3-0 flattered us, we didn't deserve to win 3-0 and the warning signs were there in the summer. I think everyone agreed we were abit lucky with 3-0 and everyone admitted we must be alot better in Australia after the summer series.

Ok, if the weather hadn't intervened it probably would've been 4-1.
Guest MattP Posted 5 January 2014 Posted 5 January 2014 We're not anywhere as bad a side who should lose 5-0 to anyone, this side still has the majority of a side that won 3 ashes series and won in India. Everything that could go wrong has, players don't want to be there and it was a tour to far for a few. Off the field its been as big a shambles as on it, the batsman should hang their heads and only Broad and Stokes come out with any credit. Time for a few changes now and we'll see what Cook wants to do to build his own side.
purpleronnie Posted 5 January 2014 Posted 5 January 2014 Its not just skill level either its a mental toughness and discipline that is vitally important.
Brainy Posted 5 January 2014 Posted 5 January 2014 Oh come on, right you can't take it away from them it's a fact we did beat them 3-0 in the summer but let's have abit of honesty 3-0 flattered us, we didn't deserve to win 3-0 and the warning signs were there in the summer. I think everyone agreed we were abit lucky with 3-0 and everyone admitted we must be alot better in Australia after the summer series. yes i've said all along that 3-0 flattered us, and the only reason we had a chance of making it 4-0 in the last test was because clarke decided to try and force a result, australia were never really in a position to lose that game until he did that. but as somebody says below, we're not that bad a side to lose 5-0 to what is at best a decent australian side. i think they reached 150 for the loss of five wickets or less only once in the first innings of the game. some of their batsman stood up and saved them when needed, not once did any of our batsman do that the upside is that when the next Ashes comes around, chris rogers will be just shy of his 38th birthday, ryan harris will be 35 and mightn't be around (he's had lots of injuries), brad haddin will be 37, george bailey hasn't been that good, so it could potentially be a very different side we face. and hey, maybe by that time we might learn how to play mitchell johnson. can't help but feel that lehmann knew the side he wanted to play this series and told them a long time ago that he will give them all a fair run in the side. Australia had Agar, Starc, Pattinson, Hughes and Cowan start in the first test in our summer, Warner, Johnson, Lyon, Harris weren't involved.. how crazy does that look? back in July if i was shown the team we'd field at the SCG included Rankin, Stokes, Borthwick, Bairstow, Ballance & Carberry, i'd have thrown up. if it wasn't for the emergence of Stokes then there would be absolutely no positives to take from this shambles
Uncle Albert Posted 5 January 2014 Posted 5 January 2014 Shambolic, absolutely shambolic. I disagree Matt and after the first test I wish I could say we're not a team who should lose 5-0 to Australia. Yeah we have Cricketers with real ability and they just haven't performed this tour and yes maybe Broad and Stokes are the only things that are positive from this Test, I personally wouldn't say Broad has done anything to say he is a glimmer of hope, he has just performed at his normal level. At least in 06/07 we were beaten by a much better team, the worrying thing is this isn't that great an Australian team, yeah they are much improved since the summer, like Walkers has said, Australia at Trent Bridge had Starc, Patterson, Agar and Siddle and this Series they now have Johnson, Harris, Lyon and Siddle, massive improvement. Warner opening the batting is a huge boost, took a lot of pressure of Watson who now looks comfortable at 3. The only Australian who hasn't had a match winning contribution in this Series is Bailey, the other 10 have done something special.. Siddle has taken massive wickets, Lyon has had big wickets, we've made Steven Smith look a fantastic batsmen and also Rogers. In 06/07 batsman could score runs against Lee, McGrath and Warne! Collingwood and Pietersen both hit big hundreds and Collingwood hit a double hundred, we could score runs against 3 of the best bowlers the game of Cricket has ever seen, we just got pasted by a much better team. This lot? None of the top 5 batsman could score a hundred or 90 in 10 innings, that is truly shocking. I wish I could say where I could see the changes coming but I so hope they happen, much work to be done. But this has been coming to this England team, ever since the tour in New Zealand this has been coming, we were never 3-0 better than them last summer.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 5 January 2014 Posted 5 January 2014 Great Series, Bowlers were great all series and we always had someone to bail us out with the bat when needed. Love that Mitch Johnson won the player of the series after all the abuse he copped from the barmy army in previous series and this series it was fitting.

But this has been coming to this England team, ever since the tour in New Zealand this has been coming, we were never 3-0 better than them last summer. You talked in a previous thread about the England Italy game being a 0-0 draw and that despite Italy being significantly better than England, it didnt matter because the overall scoreline was 0-0. So why when in this instance the ashes series score was 3-0 do you say "we were never 3-0 better than them". We were 3-0 better than them because thats what the score was. Hypocritical? Nothing particularly to do with cricket so apologise for that.
Uncle Albert Posted 5 January 2014 Posted 5 January 2014 Exactly it's nothing to do with cricket so **** off.
Captain... Posted 6 January 2014 Posted 6 January 2014 We did what we had to do in the Summer to win the Ashes, and we did 3-0, and we deserved it, the problem was one of the reasons we won in the summer was the pitches we prepared for Australia. Slow turning pitches as they don't have a good spinner and we had one of the best in the world. With a series in India and 2 series against New Zealand, then the Summer Ashes on slow pitches without Johnson, our batsman hadn't faced real aggressive fast bowling on hard bouncy pitches for a very very long time. We couldn't cope, experienced and inexperienced batsmen alike, the truth is we will probably never face that sort of hostile bowling again, but that is not an excuse. It was an awful performance, and some serious mistakes were made in selection and in the development of players like Finn and Root, but the overeaction is just as pathetic.
Alexikokopops Posted 6 January 2014 Posted 6 January 2014 Lets not let this thread die If I was still a moderator this would have been locked at 3-0
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 6 January 2014 Posted 6 January 2014 It's probably my favourite thread on here i just never want to see it die.
Uncle Albert Posted 6 January 2014 Posted 6 January 2014 I wish Andy Flower would browse this thread, myself included when I say this, too many of us have sounded like Bob Willis when discussing England. I know Piers Morgan and a few others in the game have mentioned this but what are peoples thoughts on Michael Vaughan leading the Test team after Flower?
Corky Posted 6 January 2014 Posted 6 January 2014 It's probably my favourite thread on here i just never want to see it die. Ok, don't get too arrogant, we've got the all important one dayers coming up.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 6 January 2014 Posted 6 January 2014 Ok, don't get too arrogant, we've got the all important one dayers coming up. Now that's just being silly..........we all know the t20's are more important.
Uncle Albert Posted 6 January 2014 Posted 6 January 2014 Roo, how many times have you whitewashed us now?
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 6 January 2014 Posted 6 January 2014 Roo, how many times have you whitewashed us now? 3 I believe
Uncle Albert Posted 7 January 2014 Posted 7 January 2014 3 I believe And Michael Clarke has been apart of two of them. Wow.
Captain... Posted 7 January 2014 Posted 7 January 2014 I wish Andy Flower would browse this thread, myself included when I say this, too many of us have sounded like Bob Willis when discussing England. I know Piers Morgan and a few others in the game have mentioned this but what are peoples thoughts on Michael Vaughan leading the Test team after Flower? I would like to see Vaughan brought into the ECB set-up, he was a good captain and had an agressive and imaginative approach, worked well with Fletcher to create successful game plans. I would see him as a coach for Cook, Cook has only really seen Strauss captain and you can see that in his approach, Strauss was also pretty negative, squeeze the life out of the opposition. But those players that served him so well, the attritional batting of Trott, the counter attack of Prior and the control and wickets of Swann have all disappeared one way or another this series. That and a very stable top 3. Cook and Flowers have a chance now to rebuild this team, lets hope they rebuild it as Cook's team and not Strauss' team part 2. With Stokes potentially being a genuine all rounder we have an option of going with a 5 man attack if we can get one of Finn, Rankin or Tremlett firing too then we have real options with the ball, if we can find a good spinner. We still have so many question marks over the batting. Carberry, Root, KP, Bairstow, Prior, half of the top 6 and the wicket keeper have serious question marks over them.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 7 January 2014 Posted 7 January 2014 KP was your leading score, i think his being harsly judged.
