RonnieTodger Posted 29 December 2013 Posted 29 December 2013 Officially can't be arsed with this series anymore. Pathetic.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 29 December 2013 Posted 29 December 2013 Cooks captaining was very strange this first session. Bairstow not going for that catch was shocking.
Aus Fox Posted 29 December 2013 Posted 29 December 2013 Well that's that, always defended cook as a captain but in this series and the test in particular his captaincy has wen appalling and maybe should hand over to someone else, someone who knows how to attack and counter attack not just watch as we are taken apart. But who is good enough? Broad? The rest of the team look like followers no leaders when the going gets tough.
little Brian Posted 29 December 2013 Posted 29 December 2013 looking back at Trott & Swann its quite clear a few of the squad didnt want to be there
Guest MattP Posted 29 December 2013 Posted 29 December 2013 looking back at Trott & Swann its quite clear a few of the squad didnt want to be there Yep, the whole thing has been a shambles from start to finish.
theessexfox Posted 29 December 2013 Posted 29 December 2013 3-0 flattered us completely, 4-0 doesn't flatter them one bit.
Corky Posted 29 December 2013 Posted 29 December 2013 Watched a couple of overs last night, saw the two drops that even schoolboys would be ashamed of (not so much Cook on the first, definitely Bairstow for ignoring a regulation keeper catch ).
surrifox Posted 30 December 2013 Posted 30 December 2013 3-0 flattered us completely, 4-0 doesn't flatter them one bit. but for Clarke's ludicrous cheating and time-wasting at the Oval it would have been 4-0 also I'm far from convinced they would have taken the wickets they required to win at Old Trafford in the time remaining where they believe they were denied by the weather
Brainy Posted 30 December 2013 Posted 30 December 2013 Tbf it wouldn't have been close to 4-0 had Clarke not chosen to declare and try to force a result.
Captain... Posted 31 December 2013 Posted 31 December 2013 We were a shambles, but canning Cook is not the answer, you can't expect to look good as a captain when your rock at number 3 disappears, your big pace men have lost their radar, your premium spinner retires and your master of swing and seam is getting no movement. The truth is Australia got to us, broke us mentally and we crumbled under the pressure, but the big big difference, more than Mitch was Haddin vs Prior, Haddin got them out of so many holes in this series we had them on the back foot a few times, and he just rocked up and counter attacked in a way that Prior used to, 5 or 6 down and we were always confident of scoring another 100 runs with Prior, Broad, Bresnan and Swann. Now the tail starts at 6. We need to just go away, re-group make plans for the future, Carberry and Monty are not the answer, we need to stop moving Root around and let him settle, we need a third seamer to go with Anderson and Broad, if Onions was younger I would bring him in, but I think the time now is to bring on another young bowler like we did with Anderson and Broad, maybe one of Finn/Rankin/Tremlett and show some faith in one of them, or bring back Onions, until Stokes and a new spinner are bedded in. As for Cook, he needs some support out there, not his senior players failing left, right and centre, we need to get Prior back to where he was, he is vice captain, and he is very experienced and pivotal to the team, Cook also needs support from behind the scenes, get someone like Vaughan or Hussain to come in to help him with the pressures of captaincy and work on plans with him, Strauss wasn't an imaginative captain, and Cook never got a chance to captain with Strauss there to guide him.
harpendenfox Posted 31 December 2013 Posted 31 December 2013 Good post Pancake much of which I agree with. I only take issue with your point about Vaughan, who has turned into a media rentaquote just like Savage
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 31 December 2013 Posted 31 December 2013 Agree with Pancake but some of Cooks captaincy has been woeful. Even in England it was similar but largely glossed over because our batters threw away their wicket time after time.
Guest MattP Posted 31 December 2013 Posted 31 December 2013 Good post Captain, he does need to work with someone, he has been far too defensive and some of his fields regarding slips and 3rd man to the tail have been appalling. My team for the last test. Time to see if Ballance can perform and may as well take a look at Finn and Tredwell. Cook, Root, Bell, Pietersen, Ballance, Stokes, Bairstow, Broad, Tredwell, Anderson, Finn
Guest MattP Posted 31 December 2013 Posted 31 December 2013 Looking at these stats its incredible Carberry was picked as Root was "too slow to open with Cook" 1st Test: 40 from 113 balls & 0 from 14 balls 2nd Test: 60 from 144 balls & 14 from 39 balls 3rd Test: 43 from 76 balls & 31 from 53 balls 4th Test: 38 from 103 balls & 12 from 81 balls
harpendenfox Posted 31 December 2013 Posted 31 December 2013 I think, however, that Carberry may be worth persisting with, at least in the short term, not least for the want of an available alternative. Evidently the desire to preserve his wicket has led to him becoming far too defensive, but the lad can play. Give him the first three tests back at home.

Really don't see the point of this if Cook/Root is the long term plan. Carberry is 34 and has never looked International class. Worst thing is batsman usually get runs when they start their career and then it gets harder as they get worked out, with him seeming completely incapable of scoring when they come around the wicket I don't see why we should persist. Let's start building a team now with an eye on 2015.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 1 January 2014 Posted 1 January 2014 Good post Captain, he does need to work with someone, he has been far too defensive and some of his fields regarding slips and 3rd man to the tail have been appalling. My team for the last test. Time to see if Ballance can perform and may as well take a look at Finn and Tredwell. Cook, Root, Bell, Pietersen, Ballance, Stokes, Bairstow, Broad, Tredwell, Anderson, Finn There is a distinct lack of Peter Such in that team.
surrifox Posted 1 January 2014 Posted 1 January 2014 Good post Captain, he does need to work with someone, he has been far too defensive and some of his fields regarding slips and 3rd man to the tail have been appalling. My team for the last test. Time to see if Ballance can perform and may as well take a look at Finn and Tredwell. Cook, Root, Bell, Pietersen, Ballance, Stokes, Bairstow, Broad, Tredwell, Anderson, Finn I have the impression that Cook allows the bowlers to have their way a bit too often and Jimmy and Broad (and certainly Swann before he went) dictate field settings and lines of attack a little bit too much- it looks like that watching some of the body language. Agree entirely with comments re carberry - he is in essence a decent but limited county player and has made the best of his abilities as a quickish scorer in the one day and limited overs game but is no way equipped to be a test opener. The last test was a classic- he is untroubled by Johnson's line of attack playing solidly from the crease but is incapable of keeping the score moving and so hits the rank bad ball for 4 (of which there were few) but fails to put away the half volleys and doesn't keep the strike rotated by nudging and pushing the singles which helps build the batsmen's confidence and is unsettling for the fielding side. Root is the obvious choice for me- he hasn't had a great tour, has been very unlucky with a couple of decisions and found some funny ways of getting out but he opens regularly for his county and understands what is required and is bright, doesn't appear bothered by the bullies and full of himself and is worth investing in as a long term partner for Cook. batting him at 3 or even 6 is perverse as it was selecting Bell to bat there. There is nothing magical about 6 you would like to think that an all rounder or keeper will acquit themselves well batting in that spot and marshal the tail to add valuable runs and that is solid thinking so pick someone who can do that , don't drop a key batter down there - its your first 5 that are supposed to get the big runs for you
harpendenfox Posted 1 January 2014 Posted 1 January 2014 Sounds like Rankin, Borthwick and Ballance will play, and I think we might improve in Sydney. This may simply be LCFC induced positivity running out of control
Alexikokopops Posted 2 January 2014 Posted 2 January 2014 Back from Aus. The cricket was a bit rubbish, wasn't it? Really don't see the point of this if Cook/Root is the long term plan. SOCCERROO FOX Posted 2 January 2014 Posted 2 January 2014 Back from Aus. The cricket was a bit rubbish, wasn't it? What cricket??? I don't remember watching any!
Guest MattP Posted 2 January 2014 Posted 2 January 2014 Root being dropped over Carberry, very surprising.
AKCJ Posted 2 January 2014 Posted 2 January 2014 Can't see us winning this. What a shambles we've become.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 2 January 2014 Posted 2 January 2014 Root being dropped over Carberry, very surprising. I'm surprised by this too, only reason i can see is that Root might be tired or confidence is shot.
