Kitchandro Posted 28 July 2013 Posted 28 July 2013 Nugent and Kasper both are on large contracts, both of which expire at the end of this season. Both are highly likely to not stay if we fail to go up this season. Kasper for me is more crucial to help us gain promotion to the Premiership than Nugent. He was by a large consensus the best keeper in the Championship last season and made the team of season, just watching him save some good efforts from Falcao yesterday shows he is of much more importance to us than a striker who didn't score for something like 16 games last season. Don't do that. Don't pick out the worst stat you can and make it sound like he's a crap player. Why don't you mention his goal tally for the last 2 seasons instead? And compare it with other strikers who have played for us in the last 10 years? What about the first half of the season when his goals and performances fired us into the top 2 on seperate occassions? What about the quality of the goals he scored; for example against Wolves, Middlesbrough, Forest? Or shall we talk about how Wood was total shit after his first 8 games or so and completely useless in the play-offs whilst Nugent got our only 2 goals? Or how about let's discuss Vardy and Waghorn's goal scoring prowess? Kasper is a goalkeeper. No matter what you say he'll always be a goalkeeper. His influence will always be limited because of where he plays. We're already short of outfield players as it is - even with Nugent we need another striker, as well as a centre back. I don't get your last sentence either; because Kasper made saves yesterday in a 3-0 defeat it proves he's a more important player than Nugent who wasn't on the pitch due to injury? How does that make any sense? If anything it proves that Kasper isn't that important because we still lost 3-0. Maybe we'd have made a better fist of it if Nugent was on the pitch. Just to highlight the point - whilst Nugent was on his shocking run we were on a shocking run, yet whilst Kasper was continuing to be one of the most good and consistent goalkeepers in the Championship, we were still on a shocking run. Goalkeepers do not have that much influence.
LCFC BEAST Posted 28 July 2013 Posted 28 July 2013 Nugent lives down the road from me so if he does try and leave I'll make sure he doesn't. Might have to set up camp outside his house.

What about the amount of crucial saves Kasper made last season that saved our skin? Middlesborough at home saving a last minute penalty, the ridiculous 1 hander against Blackburn, penalty save against Brighton I could go on and on? His influence is most definitely not limited. Nugent offers little if he's not scoring goals and that happened for a long time last season, don't get me wrong he is a good striker but we need to strengthen the squad and I think Nugent is expendable.
Happy Fox Posted 28 July 2013 Posted 28 July 2013 Nugent will get you 16 goals a season cut that out and we are looking even more toothless upfront where are we going to replace those 16 goals?, because Vardy and Waghorn won't score that bloody amount.

Happy Fox Posted 28 July 2013 Posted 28 July 2013 A minute ago you were all for selling him. If the price is right any player would be for sale, my worry is that we will have to accept the money if we cannot shift the deadwood worst case scenario. But having said that would the money be reinvested in the transfer kitty meaning we could bring in more players of decent quality?
MPH Posted 28 July 2013 Posted 28 July 2013 I doubt we'll sell Nuge. If we do, it's clear we have become a selling club again. I hope the rumour is false. Its already very clear we are NOT a selling club. If we were, we would have accepted the bids for Kasper and Wes...
Charl91 Posted 28 July 2013 Posted 28 July 2013 We cant afford to lose Nugent. He's one of the players who's actually good enough.

But having said that would the money be reinvested in the transfer kitty meaning we could bring in more players of decent quality? It would be ridiculous to even consider selling Nuge unless it was for stupid money i.e £5million plus which let's face it ain't gonna happen. I don't think we are in a position where we HAVE to sell, any more departures are gonna be the likes of Gally, Danns etc, not the likes of Schmeichel, Nuge, Morgan etc. If we can't shift any more of the deadwood then we are unlikely to make any more signings of note and will just have to make do with what we've got.
Leicesterpool Posted 28 July 2013 Posted 28 July 2013 We shouldn't be losing players, we should be buying them! even though Nuge can be frustrating at times he can grab that important goal we need. If we at offload any striker then it would either be Vardy or Waghorn but losing a player like Nuge would be a massive gap. Like i said in another post I'd like to see us try and get Billy Sharp! I don't think he'll quite get into the starting XI much at Southampton. So this is good opportunity to bring him in on loan or something. Just imagine a strike force of with Nugent and Sharp or Wood and Sharp.
kingfox Posted 28 July 2013 Posted 28 July 2013 Nope we need Nugent. Sell him, we will struggle to score goals, and will the fans want that to happen, no they won't. He is a main player for us, we won't be able to get in a better player now.

Nugent offers little if he's not scoring goals and that happened for a long time last season, don't get me wrong he is a good striker but we need to strengthen the squad and I think Nugent is expendable. Nugent certainly does not offer little without goals. He works hard, he's a good all round player, he can pick it up from deep, he can pass, he can hold it up. Kasper on the other hand can only influence what's going on in his own box. His kicking is poor so it's not like you can say that's an asset. Yes he has made some superb saves and I'm very glad he's our keeper but even in those games like Middlesbrough where one of his saves was actually a match winner, we still needed to actually get a goal to win (which in that game was scored by Nugent). When he pulls off a miraculous save we still need to score to win but if we score he doesn't necessarily have to do anything special for us to win. That is why his influence is limited. He can only save goals, he can't make them or score them. Let me ask you who are we going to replace Nugent with? Baring in mind we won't be able to spend £1 million just because we sell him for that much - you do realise we need the money to reduce the debt and losses, don't you?

Of course he can make them. There were numerous occasions, and I'm sorry that I can't give specifics, but I'm sure someone else can back me up here, that both Kasper's quick delivery and or long range belter to our front men has resulted in goals, especially on the counter attack. Of course he can't score them, that is pointless. However he has saved us 3 points on more than one occasion, and kept us at least in playoff contention. All he does is save goals, sounds a little Yakubu-esque on argument. btw - I wouldn't sell either, especially to a rival.

As has already been discussed the club are currently complying with FFP but we need to sell to buy. For the money we could make off removing Nugents wage and transfer fee we could bring in 2 players to help the squad in areas of need CB and CM. You're comfortable with the fact that Nugent will leave at the end of the season for nothing? Yes Kasper could do the same but If it came to sacrificing Nugent or Kasper I would prefer to keep Kasper as he's the best GK in the Championship and feel he is more crucial to helping us achieve promotion. We have potential replacements for Nugent but none for Kasper.

Because first and foremost they have to score on average 16 goals a season at this level imo so that rules out Vardy, Waghorn etc.

Waghorn has shown he can score goals in this league before. Vardy started brightly last season before illness and injury. Then you have talented youngsters who are looking for game time in Hopper, Harry P and Blyth. Behind Kasper we have Conrad Logan and Adam Smith, none of which are anywhere the international class of Kasper. Sell Kasper you have to buy a replacement 100%, sell Nugent and it's arguable you don't.

You want us to rely on Waghorn, Vardy, Hopper, Panayiotou & Blyth, three of which have hardly any league experience. And two in Waghorn & Vardy who are often scapegoats, and have proved that sometimes they can be absolutely shit. No thanks, we need to keep hold of our best assets, and Nugent is one of them, especially if we sold him to a rival, they would be absolutely laughing.
NewburyFox Posted 28 July 2013 Posted 28 July 2013 We have to keep him, we just won't be able to replace the goals he brings. Regardless of his poor spell, he's still scored 32 goals for us in two seasons, which is impressive however you look at it. Also, unlike Kasper, I don't think he will get to the PL again unless he gets promoted (or has a tremendous season), and because of this he's more likely to sign a new contract with us as we're one of the bigger Championship teams and I don't think he can do much better than us. Would depend on whether he's willing to take a wage cut, of course. Selling to Forest would be a disaster for our season IMO.

A lot of people were saying sell Kasper because he can leave for free at the end of the season. Nugent is out of contract at the end of the season and it's very unlikely that he is going to sign a new 1 (mainly because we won't pay him as much again as he's on now). Sell him and get money for him to help strengthen the squad. I'm prepared to keep Kasper and risk him leaving for free because he's an international standard GK that is difficult to replace, Nugent is just a good standard Championship striker.
Jace Posted 28 July 2013 Posted 28 July 2013 Why can't our owners just buy Monaco and loan us their players?

You'd offload our best forward for a decade, backed up by stats... To save a keeper who was indifferent for half a season before his shot stopping skills got highlighted by the team's weaker performances during the backend. A keeper who can't deal with crosses & setpieces a keeper who can't distribute? Granted his shot stopping is fantastic, but the fact he had so many shots to stop highlights the strengthening needed outfield & having a big fee & wage tied up in a keeper seems a bit of luxury if we're uncompetitive outfield
GingerrrFox Posted 28 July 2013 Posted 28 July 2013 But Wood & Nugent together are capable of scoring 30-35 a season. Wood & Waghorn/Vardy aren't capable. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I respect everyone's opinion but for me it makes no sense keeping a player that is highly likely to leave for nothing at the end of the season if they are not exceptional (I think Kasper and Wes are two examples of exceptional players who I would keep). I just don't think Nugent is exceptional and I would rather get £1 million for him now and clear the wages to strengthen the squad, than him leave for sod all next June.
