Uncle Monty Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 As a fox from afar, well Cardiff, I only manage a handful of games a year (but watch all available games when shown). At the end of last season everyone was raving about James' performances but he has hardly had a look in this season. I'm not going to criticise the current midfield as they are performing well but I was wondering if people could tell me what kind of player he is?
Cincinnati Fox Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 Was in the team, silly sending off and then we go on a winning run and nigel does not change a winning team. Not a bad player but I always feel that he plays in 3rd gear...
MPH Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 Pearson policy has always been to not drop some one if they are playing well and even more so to not change a winning team. Will be interesting to see what happens after forest..
OzFox Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 If memory serves, he looked lethargic and unfit for the first few games, lost his place and has struggled to get back in. Only saw him "live" a couple of times last year, but I thought he looked very useful indeed. Quite disappointed he didn't carry his form over to this season
LcFc_Smiv Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 A lot of it comes down to how well Drinkwater has been playing, James is of a similar mold.
Kinowe Soorie Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 I'd put him in for King. Time for a change.
Fox92 Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 Good player, was decent enough before he got sent off at Charlton (still think he shouldn't have got sent off). Drinkwater's performances have been quality, dominating games again, and James has obviously struggled to get back into the side.
martyn Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 Looked like he started the season carrying a few extra pounds to me. Drinkwater got his chance and took it. Similar to last year with James, he then started to dictate games once he'd got match sharp. I suspect the same will happen this year.
kingfox Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 The best midfielder we have. Didn't get enough credit last season, until fans realised how good he is. Really surprised him and Drinkwater haven't been given a chance together this season yet, they had good understanding last season, up until the second half of the season when Drinky went shit.

Fantastic. I remember your words of wisdom about James when he signed.
kingfox Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 Fantastic. I remember your words of wisdom about James when he signed. Didn't think we needed him, that was all. Didn't call him crap, like I did with De Laet. Who on a scale, I was right about.

I think he's one who takes a good couple of months to get up to speed/fitness, hence why he had a storming end to the season after initially looking quite poor last year. Whether that's down to the injuries that he's had or he's just not a natural athlete I don't know but I would expect him to come good in the next month or so onwards.
The Horse's Mouth Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 Didn't think we needed him, that was all. Didn't call him crap, like I did with De Laet. Who on a scale, I was right about. you're always right.
Kitchandro Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 He's just been a bit unlucky really. Perhaps he didn't start the season the best but there were still a couple of quality performances that I saw, off the bench or otherwise. He got sent off which left the door open for other players, Drinkwater and King have both been in good form so he's just not had a look in. He played against Fulham and looked his old self, but he's just going to have to wait his turn. He's versatile in the way he plays and can do everything on a good day - tackle, pass, shoot, even take a player on. I'm a big fan and I'm sure he'll be a valuable player this season.
Lionheart Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 He just hasn't been able to get back in but I reckon once he does he will be a key player for us in the second half of the season.
Finnegan Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 He looks overweight and unfit at the moment. He came to us needing to bulk up a lot but he's gone far too far the other way, just looks sluggish now. Obviously can play well, we've all seen it, but way off the pace.
Arriba Los Zorros Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 think he's class to be honest, and would get in all other champ sides except QPR, he's finding it tough to dislodge Drinky and King which is fair enough, but its more to do with them being good than James being bad. He'll be fine.
GingerrrFox Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 I'd get him in over King at the minute. He'd be first choice in midfield for me with Drinkwater.
kingfox Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 you're always right. I get more horny over you, than I do over a video of Rachel Riley, and that is saying something.
marko Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 Didn't think we needed him, that was all. Didn't call him crap, like I did with De Laet. Who on a scale, I was right about. Well you said he was an "over-rated Man United reject" so you might as well have done.
kingfox Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 Well you said he was an "over-rated Man United reject" so you might as well have done. That was Drinkwater.
Guest Col city fan Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 I can't believe that Matt James could be 'overweight'. He's a pro footballer who has a very strict fitness manager in Pearson. Maybe a bit round the edges in the summer, but not now the seasons three months in. A more plausible explanation is that he's bulked up AND Pearson is playing who he thinks is his best side.
Johnny Cash Posted 16 November 2013 Posted 16 November 2013 Was pretty bad at the start of the season, played better without him. Was patchy last season. Good Christmas and end of the season.
Banks Posted 17 November 2013 Posted 17 November 2013 Still a very good player, can't believe how fickle some fans are. He's our best midfielder at the club, no question.
Danno Posted 17 November 2013 Posted 17 November 2013 Seen a picture on twitter last season of him with a pot belly.
