ScouseFox Posted 22 November 2013 Posted 22 November 2013 Staying up to watch the Ashes til daft o'clock last night and hopefully most nights this series got me thinking and chatting to a few mates about sporting events that take place when we should really be sleeping. I'm sure some posters on here have all sorts of through the night stories. Whether you were a kid staying up way past your bedtime or an adult clearly not concerned about your work efficiency the day after. Whether it be seeing it through and powering on until the early hours or setting an alarm for 4am to get up. Whether it be big boxing bouts in Vegas, The Ashes, Olympics and World Cups on the other side of the World, Superbowl parties etc, what are your best memories/stories of sporting events you've decided are more important than getting a good night's sleep? I'm sure there's some of our Oz friends on here who often find themselves up at 3 or 4 am watching City on the box, too . I'll kick things off with Murray's US Open win, can't remember what time it went on until but definitely the small hours on a weeknight. Struggled through sixth form the next morning but who cared?! Another quite recent one I remember is the 2012 World Darts semi final between Lewis and Wade. Was the second semi of the day, first starting early afternoon and Lewis/Wade went on until about quarter past 1 I think and I was in work early the next morning. Nightmare but again well worth it, who needs sleep .
AKCJ Posted 22 November 2013 Posted 22 November 2013 I've just had my 2nd coffee since 10pm. Ashes fever
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 22 November 2013 Posted 22 November 2013 When I wasn't old enough to know better I'd always make a special effort to stay up for WCW/WWF pay-per-views. The whole thing was great value back then.
ozleicester Posted 22 November 2013 Posted 22 November 2013 Football... Leicester City, staying up to listen to games that kick off at midnight, getting up to listen to games played at 4am... Stupid to be honest, but as i explain to my missus, its my fault if i dont get up and they lose....YES!!!..., i do have that power! FA Cup Finals until recently always kicked off at midnight Almost every world cup since 1970 has been played at a time that means stupid Oclock for every England match and the finals. Silly silly man
OzFox Posted 22 November 2013 Posted 22 November 2013 I'm sure there's some of our Oz friends on here who often find themselves up at 3 or 4 am watching City on the box, too . It's when you can't get a video stream or radio commentary and you find yourself staring at Livetext at 4 in the morning. That's when it gets really tragic
Jimothy Posted 22 November 2013 Posted 22 November 2013 I remember as an excited 13 year old (I think I was 13) setting the alarm for stupid o'clock on a Sunday morning to get up and watch the Japanese Grand Prix where Damon Hill was set to take the world title. I watched all the build up for about an hour before falling asleep for the actual race and missing it all. I was gutted, to me seeing that was more important than sleep and I couldn't stay awake. I tried to stay up and watch Murray win the US Open last year too. I was doing well when he was 2 sets up but when Djokovic pegged him back to 2-2 I couldn't hold on any longer and had to go bed. Slightly annoying I stayed up late and still missed that magic moment.
goose2010 Posted 22 November 2013 Posted 22 November 2013 Super Bowl earlier in the year. Was a cracking game then there was a power cut in the stadium trying to stay awake during that was a killer! Used to do all the WWF PPV and watched a few Hatton fights and a couple of UFC events.
pSinatra Posted 22 November 2013 Posted 22 November 2013 I was 15 when Mike Tyson made a mess of Trevor Berbick to win the world title. Stayed up until stupid-o'clock for most of Tyson's fights. Will never forget the night Bruno first fought Tyson & rattled him........"get in there Frank". Used to stay up with my Dad to watch Hearns/Hagler/Leonard/Duran fights.......but was a bit young & didn't always make it. I did witness the greatest 3 rounds in boxing though!!

StanSP Posted 22 November 2013 Posted 22 November 2013 Much like above. When I was into wrestling (not that long ago come to think of it!), I'd watch the pay-per-views online til about 4am/5am and then have to get up about 7.30am to get back to uni on Monday morning. Then that would affect wanting to watch Monday Night Raw in the early hours of Tuesday, too. Also watched every Superbowl til early hours for the past 7 years? Think my first one I watched was Steelers vs Seahawks round my mates house and we had school the next day. Strolled in about 10.30 (start at 8.30am) and teachers didn't bat an eyelid .
Wycombe Fox Posted 22 November 2013 Posted 22 November 2013 The most amazing event I stayed up for has to be the 'Ben Johnson' Olympic 100m final in Seoul in 1988. There were a few of us athletic 'officiandos' watching. I remember the excitement before the gun followed by the stunned silence at the tape. We all knew straight away that we had just witnessed a drug-fuelled athlete winning. We didn't know at the time that most of the others were 'dirty' as well.
purpleronnie Posted 22 November 2013 Posted 22 November 2013 What about sexy time? I'm quite happy to deprive myself of sleep for a snuggle.

Some great fighters mentioned there, boxing seemed better in those days

F1, Wimbledon, Ashes series in England, 6 nations the list goes on...
