Finnaldo Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 Are people really getting their knickers in a twist over this. Something like 5% of the population is Muslim, the chances of them a) working in M&S B) working on the tills and C) refusing to serve you are almost infinitesimally small. Exactly. This is a small, unimportant matter that allows Muslims to take on a job without worrying about their religious conscience. It's not like setting up Shariah Courts is it?
Strokes Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 If you dont like it, don't shop at m&s. It seems a little bit silly to put people in a job that can't do it properly but what do I know?
Rincewind Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 I would think M&S may have a notice at the till stating that that one till does not serve pork or alcohol. No problem the few people that buy these items can queue up at the next till. It could be shorter anyway.
Harry - LCFC Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 People are entitled to dislike a certain task but that does mean of course that they're not fulfilling their job requirements. If you don't do your job you're liable to be sacked. The answer isn't to allow people who can't do the job to continue working. The answer is for those people to find an occupation they can do. It's all incredibly immature, both parties.
StanSP Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 People acting like they know what an M&S contract/job requirement looks like .

Larry_LCFC Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 Begs the question why are you getting so worked up over the Muslim/Pork/Alcohol issue but not over the Christians/Sunday issue? That Christian woman signed up for a job that requires her to work Sunday but refused. She's just as 'bad'. Yeah she is just as bad. What sort of idiot signs up for a job that clearly states Sundays, if you're then gonna turn around and go actually, I'm too religious to work Sundays. The law shouldn't be on her side. Just like marks shouldn't be inconveniencing customers by giving in to Muslim demands, when they are the ones who took a job in a shop that sells alcohol and pork. I bet a high percentage of customers have one of those items in their trollies. If employers are forced to follow suit with similar policies, a lot may be put off employing Muslim workers. Without a doubt, marks will lose custom with people waking out instead of waiting.
StanSP Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 Yeah she is just as bad. Will people really walk out instead of waiting? Really?
Webbo Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 More fool them, then. There's always other tills open surely? Not to mention self-service checkouts these days. Will people really walk out instead of waiting? Really? Yes, I would.
StanSP Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 Yes, I would. Seriously? You fill your trolley up and take however long it takes (at least 15-20 minutes surely?) and then you go up to a till, notice they won't serve you alcohol/pork and you'd just leave your shopping there and walk off? Wasted all that time when you could just queue up for another 2-3 minutes and keep your shopping?
Harry - LCFC Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 People acting like they know what an M&S contract/job requirement looks like . I don't pretend to know the details of it all but clearly the primary purpose of the job is to sell the shop's stuff. The sale of pork and alcohol will be included in this requirement. This isn't some wild assumption I'm making, it's just obvious. I doubt you'd be allowed to sack someone for that or allowed to discriminate against them when recruiting. Sarcasm right? Yeah I know, not employing someone who can't do the job is just awful!
Strokes Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 Would you now be considered a racist if you chose to queue at a non Muslim workers till, based on race and service?

Wasted all that time when you could just queue up for another 2-3 minutes and keep your shopping? I've walked out of tescos before now because the queues were ridiculous. If I was at a till and the check out assistant refused to put through some beer so that I had to queue up somewhere else or wait 5 minutes for someone else to put it through I'd tell them to shove it. The shop is supposed to be there at my convenience not the other way round.

StanSP Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 Would you now be considered a racist if you chose to queue at a non Muslim workers till, based on race and service? You definitely shouldn't. Especially if you're in an M&S store and you may think you might be 'rejected' alcohol/pork at a till where a Muslim worker is. Unless you choose to take the chance that the Muslim person behind the till doesn't really care. I'm sure that other Muslims who happens to work in an M&S store don't care about this new rule.

I doubt you'd have to wait an eternity. Someone will be called over and you'd be 'fast-tracked' so to speak in to another till. Also, if you've noticed the queues are long at the start of your shopping trip and walked out then fair enough. But if you've seen the queues are long, done your shopping, then decided to walk out, that's your own fault and the store can only do so much to make sure 100% of customers are satisfied all the time. This is all getting quite pedantic .
Webbo Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 I'd imagine they'd call over another member of staff to handle the items and then carry on. How long will that take? I'm not there for their convenience.
Soar Fox Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 What would happen if someone refused to serve a woman wearing a burka?
DennisNedry Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 This sounds like fun. I'm gonna go into the local M&S and see if there are any Muslims on the checkouts. If there are, it's pork chops and Vodka I'm queueing up with. Hope they refuse to sell, just so I can kick off In all seriousness though, this is a non story. There are far more concerning aspects of Islam and Muslims than not selling me bacon.
Strokes Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 I wonder how many shoppers at this time of year havent got alchol and/pork in their shopping baskets? It would put unnecerssary strain on the rest of the staff, best to get them stacking shelves until the new year.
MooseBreath Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 I suppose they would have to put a sign up saying no pork or booze at this till, so you'd know in advance. Then most people would avoid that till even if they had no booze or pork, just for the sake of principle, leaving the muzzo assistant sitting there looking like a right dolly.
Matt Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 More fool them, then. There's always other tills open surely? Not to mention self-service checkouts these days. Will people really walk out instead of waiting? Really? I did it yesterday, in Marks actually. I wasn't buying Pork or Alcohol, I was buying a few gifts but then saw the queue and thought fuck this and promptly left to go to another shop and get something else.

There are far more concerning aspects of Islam and Muslims than not selling me bacon. I would be interested to see whether they actually start labelling checkouts as Muslim and non Muslim. Complete backwards step to ridding the Muslim faith of being singled out and stereotyped. Like I said earlier what a great way to create barriers between people. No integration at all. This could be the final nail in the coffin for m&s. Will be watching closely how this story develops over the coming weeks. Gonna be some seriously negative press coming their way.
