Most benefit claimants are pensioners or low paid working families.

Unless you meet these people on a daily basis which I don't you wouldn't understand.

All these stories do is deflect attention away from the real issues, the queen is doing a speech at 3pm on xmas day, would they give that airtime to mouse manski at action homeless? I'll let you decide, not checked the tv schedule but I bet they give the queen a slot no questions asked.

I bet she doesn't struggle with the bedroom tax.

Prince William has never had to visit a food bank.

I know a street guy who is a world war one veteren, some people say he's mad and that's impossible but they probably read the mail and have never met, im giving him the benefit of the night. Hes only young.

Modt homeless guys don't want to be pissed on.

Im involved in a campaign called DGPOA (Don't get pissed on again) if they do they should tweet us and we'll provide the help they need.

Bet we don't get a call from Ian Duncan Smith, no doubt he'll be having turkey this Christmas.

Had a meeting at work today which was supposed to only last half an hour but it lasted all day because people couldn't stop talking about this M&S vs the muzzos saga.

Popped into the newsagent on the way home to pick up a magazine but couldn't find it because the entire shelf had been given over to coverage of M&S vs the muzzos.

Tried to get some petrol but it was closed - apparently the tanker drivers hadn't left their stations this morning because they were engaged in a debate over M&S vs the muzzos.

My Mrs was due in from Dubai but couldn't board the plane their end because the pilots refused to fly anywhere until the M&S vs the muzzos situation had been resolved.

Rang her parents to tell them she wouldn't be home for Xmas but they just had an answerphone message saying they weren't taking calls as they were focussed on discussing this issue with M&S and the muzzos.

Just got home and someone is literally wedged into my door frame, blood everywhere, apparently he was thrown from a moving car by his father after he tried to change the topic of conversation away from M&S vs the muzzos.

Got inside and had over fifteen thousand missed calls from people who were apparently going through the phone book calling everyone to talk about M&S vs the muzzos.

Sat down and muttered "what a day" and instantly an army helicopter was at my window firing machine gun rounds at me and shouting at me through a megaphone, saying I'm not allowed to say anything not related to M&S vs the muzzos.

Tried to protest but got a bullet through the eye, picked the bullet from my skull and saw that it was engraved with the M&S vs the muzzos story from the daily mail.

Crawled across to the telephone to call for an ambulance and a lady impatiently said "what?" Told her I'd been shot by an army helicopter and she just "will you ever learn" and next thing I knew about thirty five armed MI6 agents were in my house, telling me they'd warned me once that the only discussion allowed is over M&S vs the muzzos.

Posting this from Guantanamo. Just got out of solitary where they played a five second loop say "M&S, muzzos, only that" over and over again.

Earlier they raped me with a quartet of pigs wrapped in blankets line up on a cocktail stick.

I may not be the only one that thinks the welfare of children is more important than one or two M&S customers being upset at Muslims. I never said ban it just not to hype it to the level that it has been.

That's a different thread, why does virtually every conversation have to turn back to welfare, foodbanks, Tories, cuts etc?

This is a topic on it's own and should be discussed, not compared to unrelated events.

Sorry all I said was there were other news stories that were more relevant to the average person. I did not mention what stories.  Others have also said this was a non-story and I was agreeing.

At what point did this oh so inconvenienced chap say 'well fvck this, I'm calling the Daily Mail'?

This is literally nothing more than a misjudgement by M&S. On a similar scale to every other little issue that people encounter at work....  'Oh I wish Mr Goldstein would get back to me on that e-mail this evening, how dare he respect the Sabbath?!'

How anyone could ever turn this into a discussion on the clearly strong moral fibre of someone who they have never met and will never meet is beyond me. Fvcking pathetic.

I agree

As long as people in the UK continue reading the Daily Mail and use their headlines to make a case against whomever minority is portrayed, the onslaught will sadly continue.

Unless you are writing a hilarious BBC 3 comedy.

Actually I can see that as a hidden camera prank show, man goes to the butchers to buy pork, but they sell other things, wait ok a man (a normal man, like you and me) goes to the off license to buy some beer  and they have a Muslim (well a man pretending to be a Muslim we all know that lauughter and proprietors of laughter are banned by Allah) behind the counter he refuses to serve them :giggle: . Then we can film this man getting increasingly exasperated and angry at the fact he can't buy alcohol. I mean he went to the off license and the man working their can't sell him alcohol lol. He would do his nut  . Then he could offer him some crisps and a can of pop instead lol. Just as he is about to explode the shop assistant stops and prays to Allah lol  lol. Haha he is fuming, then the manager walks in, he was on his break, that is why they had to get the Muslim stock boy to man the till. It all makes sense now, the customer is relieved and asks the manager to serve him, but he won't serve him because he too is also a Muslim, :crylaugh: it would be hilarious, it ends with the man threatening physical violence so the shop owner blows himself up.

I'm on the phone to BBC 3 now.

Take a bow. I'm off to put my doffing cap on.

What's wrong with Port? Philistine.

That it would be unlikely in a food bank?

Not really accepting it. Just understanding that at some points in the day it can get a bit busy and you sometimes as a customer should expect long queues and you just have to be patient.

Yes, expect long queues, but you shouldn't expect the person on the till to refuse to do his job because he doesn't like what you're buying. If someone tried to buy coke and the chap on the till said "nah mate, won't sell that to you, I prefer Pepsi", you'd be pretty ****ing pissed off, and I fail to see why invoking imaginary friends makes that acceptable.

When I go into McDonalds and say, "can I have a Coke please" they always say, "do you mean Pepsi?" and try and sell me Pepsi, the gits!

Actually, this isn't true - wouldn't be seen dead in McDonalds.

Which I believe were Shergar's last words.

Again. I doubt they'd refuse to sell it.

They'd call another assistant over, they'd scan it for them, and them they'd carry on as usual. It's like if you've ever brought a game at a supermarket. They call someone over with the disk and then carry on. About 30 seconds.

What are you basing this on? Have you ever had it at a check our where the barcode won't scan and they press the button for someone to come and help? Never takes less than 5 minutes.

But they are - they're refusing to sell it and asking for someone else to take the sale.

And, no chance would it be a 30 second job - as webbo has said, never takes less than 5 minutes when something won't work at present.

I'm back in Leicester over the festive period, you got a hidden camera? We could totally do this. We would be comedy legends.

I was think I could brown up for it, but then it could be even funnier if it was a white Muslim. Imagine that a white Muslim, working in an Off License, in Leicester!!!!

He'd do his nut.

Oh as for the Port, my bad, I get it now. You could also have Evertongue vs aw-Fulham

We should just have separate tills for halal/kosher/vegetarian and haraam/non-kosher/non-vegetarian products, also women should have their own tills too.

Or as others have said, if their religion/convictions/faith precludes them from selling products that they do not get assigned to the till or the relevant food section.

Women should have their own tills? Wtf? What is this the 1800s? Should we segregate blacks as well?

lol, don't forget the disabled they could have an Express lane next to the best spaces.

My wife would be able to go to two different tills then. At least then she could pick a short line and get home to cook the dinner, wash up, do the ironing and darn my socks.

That is true but not on religeous grounds. They mostly give out non-perishbles and essentials such as toiletries.

As others have said this was a one off and I doubt there is a mass awareness of what happened unless the news is publicised  countrywide throughout Britain.

You have never been disabled have you MB? Could you manuver a wheelchair through a narroe aisle?

That's a faulty barcode. Of course it's going to take longer.

Normally the supermarkets have plenty of staff. Literally all it takes is to call the assistant a few metres away to come and take over, A transition of about 30 seconds to a minute.

Could I maneuver a wheelchair through a narrow isle. I see what you mean now Ken. You really do have a grip on the most important questions of our time.

Not the case in practise though - we're not talking faulty barcodes as the main time, it's someone actually bothering to come over and help. With technical issues, fair enough, but because a member of staff refuses to do their job?

Andy Street of John Lewis:

But speaking to Radio 5 live's On The Money programme on Sunday, Andy Street, managing director of John Lewis, said the company did not have a similar policy, and questioned whether members of staff should have the right to refuse to serve customers.

"This is taking it one stage beyond common sense," he told the programme.

"We certainly have never had any issue with our teams... we've not even had to have a policy on this. I would hope [members of staff] would understand that in their job this was probably going to be required."

Funnily enough, after having worked previously in a John Lewis store, for 4 years, this is certainly not the attitude of John Lewis, in fact it's very much that of M&S. Just an opportunity to gain one over M&S.

Why does that matter? Either way someone will come over and get the job done. Either way you're going to be inconvenienced but then someone will come along and  sort it out.

Also, Webbo, where on earth do you shop where it never takes less than 5 minutes for someone else to come over?! In the Tesco Express near me, there's always someone available within a minute to sort the issue out.
