Is Matty James Actually Our Best Midfielder?

Recommended Posts

With the form and improvement of Drinkwater really stealing the headlines this season, yet again I feel sometimes that Matty James isn't getting the recognition he deserves from fans. It's clearly evident that Drinkwater & King play better when they are partnering Matty James, there seems to be more understanding between the two central midfielders, whenever James is involved. I've said basically from the start of last season, what Matty James does is a key component to our side, the amount of hard work and graft he puts himself through for a full 90 minutes, is a joy to watch. He is a brilliant passer of the ball, and when on the ball, he is one of the coolest midfielders I have seen at Leicester City for a long time, he knows when to pass it, and who to pass it to, and the quicker his passes are, he seems to be the one who get's the urgency going in the side. He is a perfect all round midfielder as well, he works hard in the defensive situations, and despite not scoring many he is always willing to drive forward.

He has to be my favourite player at the minute(might be surprising to some, but I do have favourites  :frantics: )

So what do you guys think.

Is he actually our best midfielder at the moment?

Or if you don't think he is, do you think he is one of the most underrated midfielders throughout the whole of the Championship?

Not going to comment on who is better but I've been really impressed with the James/Drinkwater partnership, which is no doubt our best midfield partnership. They are very good at keeping the ball, and the chemistry between both of them is obviously good and vital.

I think him and Drinkwater are pretty much on level pegging in all honesty. Was great to see them both getting back and defending yesterday, as well as creating chances. The longer we can keep hold of the both of them the better imo.

He is fantastic!

But........

Drinky for me. Just. Along with Vardy and Dyer he has been my favourite player this season.

All of our players have played their part in making this a real season to remember (so far) lol

James was superb last night but Drinkwater has been very consistent this season. Wouldn't like to describe one as better as the other right now but very happy to have these two in our team.

Yes. He is.

The problem I think, however, is that it takes him a while to get going in a season. Be that due to past injuries or just the fact that he's no necessarily as much of a 'natural athlete' as others I don't know, but I said at the start of the season that I thought he'd hit form from December onwards and for the last few weeks he's been immense.

With James he can do everything; pass, tackle, shoot, head, dribble, turn... Whilst Drinkwater has been great this year he does have his limitations but when Matty James is on-song he can be one of the finest players in the division. He absolutely ran the show last night and that was down to his ability to keep play moving quickly and to engineer space with neat little turns and close control.

He's going to be a big player for us for the rest of the season.

They'd be two players I'd be happy starting in the Premier League should we go up and both are young, it's no mean feat keeping Mr invisible out of the team over a long period of time but both have done so due to no other reason than they've been outstanding for us, the thing I like about them both the most is they are old school classing centre midfielders, none of this you hold i'll go forward shit . Although I prefer Drinkwater personally think he's really starting to grow into a very good player keeps the ball so well and always goes backwards/sideways thing is one of the biggest myths at the club. If he doesn't make Championship team of the year I'll be amazed

I think both James and Drinky have formed a great partnership in the middle! Just shows how good they've been where Andy King can't even get a game! but that is football for yer!

Without a doubt, Matty James is our best midfielder. He is the engine, our Stevie G. Said it last season too, when James is fit and playing, we play well. It's no coincidence that our poor run last season coincided with his injury. It's also no coincidence that our current 8 game winning streak coincides with him starting ahead of King. Best midfielder outside of the Premiership in my eyes and future captain material. Very clever player, does the dirty work but also does the work on the ball. Good set piece taker too. A real engine and leader in there.

Really? Tackle? Shoot? He can win the ball and break up play, but some of his tackling has been pretty bad, he normally dives in recklessly at least once when I see him. His shooting is pretty poor as well, I've seen a lot of wayward shots from him, not only him, but I have very little confidence in his shooting.

Cracking player don't get me wrong, but tackling and shooting are not his strengths in my opinion. Reading the play, passing, moving, breaking up the play and coming forward with the ball and setting up attacks, excellent, tackling and shooting a bit iffy.

When Drinkwater lost form last season, we collapsed. When he's had shit games this year we've struggled. When he's shone we've dominated.

I like James, he's a good foil for Danny, does the simple things well and breaks up play.

But I wouldn't call him our best, though I don't think they're so strictly comparable.

Think Drinkwater has been our best midfielder this season, but James really does have some serious talent and watching him you easily forget he hasn't started 40 professional games yet.

Wouldn't surprise me if he went on to reach the highest level of football out of our current midfield.

Genuinely think we have a midfielder partnership here that could play in the Premier League.

I'll let you off Jonny

Babylon bringing out the banter :P

Is that Babylon's banter? I hadn't noticed...

I think Drinkwater is the most important of our central midfielders. We could play King for James and not be too affected. I think King for Drinkwater would affect us. The engine room in the middle has gone.

The Drinkwater/James combo is the best though. They know each other's game, trust each other and hunt in packs. We have scored so many goals this season by winning the ball back and giving it to the quick men. Hats off to Nige, its worked.

Col, king, when the two of you have a combined IQ that's about half of Babs', I really don't know why you bother attempting to bait the guy.

(To clarify, I'm not implying Babs is a genius.)

It's incredible to think that he's only 22 also when he's been playing like a seasoned professional. I remember a United fan coming on here saying that they rated him very highly until he broke his leg and the recovery took well into 18 months +. Let's put it this way, he would be more useful for them right now that Tom Cleverley.
