England's World Cup Year 2014.

Danny Mills was ok, merited his place as 2nd choice right back. Smalling is a pub player, nowhere near good enough for any national side at this World Cup.

A pub player lol. Really? Rubbish.

I know a few eyebrows have been raised by Lampard's inclusion, but I think it's quite an astute move to be honest. That squad is hardly packed with leaders and experience - Lampard's got big tournament experience and he will be a massive help to the young players in the squad, as well as the less-experienced older players.

If you leave out Lampard, in terms of leaders and strong personalities in that squad, you've got Hart and Gerrard, and that's it. I see it as a similar kind of move to when Pearson brought in Powell/Phillips/Hammond - they're not going to be playing an awful lot, but they're invaluable to the less experienced players behind the scenes.

How does everyone think we should line up then?

I reckon:

                       Hart

Johnson   Cahill   Jagielka   Baines

             Gerrard   Wilshere

 Sterling        Barkley        Lallana

                    Sturridge

OR

                       Hart

Johnson   Cahill   Jagielka   Baines

                     Gerrard

 Sterling        Barkley        Wilshere

              Rooney  Sturridge

I'd go for your first team, but he won't sack Rooney off sadly.

Ok maybe a bit harsh, but he's well off the standard.

This is hardly a suprise is it, they might be shit but we have nothing better, Hodgson loves Welbeck and Wilshere is was always going to go.

We have a lot better defenders than Smalling and Jones who have been playing first team football this season and consistently playing well ie - curtis davies, michael dawson, gibbs, caulker, flanagan, stones. I'd have more faith in any of them over jones or smalling.

How can you justify picking two players that have been bit part players for the 7th best team in the Prem.

He's a decent premier league defender. If he played for Cardiff or someone people would be going on about what a talent he is.

lol no matter what team he would play in it wouldnt change the fact that his performances this season have been awful. Absolute horseshit.

Why are people putting a team together with Wilshere as a holding midfielder, he is far from that.

He's far too over rated, not fully match fit yet, hardly featured this season and doesn't deserve to go. His form has never really improved Over the seasons since the hype, and there are better defensive midfielders who i'd prefer to rely on who have been consistently performing this season. One being Gareth Barry. Yes he's not got flair or will do anything amazing but that's not the job of a defensive midfielder.

Yeah so bad he consistently gets picked in a premier league starting eleven.

I'd love it if we lined up like that, but you're right - I can't see him binning off Rooney. I just wish for once we'd pick our best team, rather than packing a side with talented players who just don't function well together. Rooney's never done anything of note in a big tournament, other than get himself sent off and prove what a petulant child he is.

Euro 2012 proved that we're capable of winning games without him and in Sturridge we've actually got a proper goalscorer in the side now - he's obviously talented, but I just don't see a place for him.

I know its not a surprise, I'd have probably taken Jones just for his versatility. Also I'd have took Barry (I know) because he's played well with Barkley and has had a decent season, he would be a sub/back up. In terms of defence, Flanagan and/or Cole as they've had better seasons than Smalling and Jones. I really don't think that Wilshere has merited a world cup place at all and Welbeck just annoys me. I just had hope that Hodgson would oversee them :(

Shame about Cole but if your not playing you can't really be in contention and they've named two left backs we don't need a third.  Smalling and Jones are versatile and have more international experience than Flanagan. Wilshere has been picked on his supposed talent and I agree about Welbeck but Woy worships him so always going to go.

I certainly don't envisage him as a holding midfielder in my lineups. I would have him playing more of a Danny Drinkwater role, along with Gerrard.

Wilshere for Henderson

That would then be my B team

That's not true is it, he was sublime at Euro 2004. Granted that was 10 years ago and he's done nothing since. In his defense he was injured in 2010 and banned for half 2012. I'd play him still. More in hope than expectation but at the end of the day he is one of our best players.

Great stuff.

So do you actually believe he has played good enough this season to warrant a place in the England squad for a major tournament?

Can't think of any centre back apart from those selected, maybe Stones but he's only been playing consistently for about 3 months.

Who else would you pick? Stones has only been playing consistently well recently. Unfortunately, we're a bit shit at CB at the minute.

The right midfielder will be Milner. Don't get why other people are predicting anything different. He's an automatic choice because Roy is defensive and boring. The attackers list, apart from Rooney, is depressing. As is the defenders list. I still would have taken Cole who remains better defensively than Baines and Shaw. And I would have taken Carrick, I know he's had a poor season but he holds the ball well and knows how to find a player with a pass.
