Dan Posted 11 May 2014 Posted 11 May 2014 Our right back options are an absolute joke. If the World Cup was in 2015 I wouldn't be shocked if people were suggesting Trippier. nothing official yet bar cole saying he isn't going. journos saying this and that but none of what they are claiming on twitter to be massive exclusives are either official or surprising really. we need to defend for our lives to get something against italy and uruguay and we're relying on someone younger than me who's had one decent season for southampton. when we've got one of the best left backs to ever play the game sat on his arse at home. Yep pretty much agreed. Like I say I admire the reason he's done it but I think he's timed it wrong. This is the hardest group we've had in decades. If we sit back with this defence we'll be sent backing.
kingfox Posted 11 May 2014 Posted 11 May 2014 That just about confirms your back up right back is going to be Smalling doesn't it? Suppose so
AKCJ Posted 11 May 2014 Posted 11 May 2014 Hart Johnson Jagielka Cahill Baines Gerrard Barkley Sterling Rooney Lallana Sturridge
kingfox Posted 11 May 2014 Posted 11 May 2014 Jon Flanagan & John Stones can play right-back, Flanagan has impressed me a lot this season. Apart from that England have very little in that department, unless Hodgson took a chance on someone like Nathaniel Clyne or Kieran Trippier.
ScouseFox Posted 11 May 2014 Posted 11 May 2014 neither stones or flanagan has played more than about 5 premier league games at right back in their respective careers. again not exactly what you want going into a world cup where we will need to be solid.
Aleksz Posted 11 May 2014 Posted 11 May 2014 neither stones or flanagan has played more than about 5 premier league games at right back in their respective careers. again not exactly what you want going into a world cup where we will need to be solid. We don't need to be solid at all. Are we expecting to win the ****er or what?I'd rather see the Stones, Flanagans, Shaws, Barkleys of the world given a chance in the squad rather than the same overrated premier league shite such as Young or Milner or what ever.
Dan Posted 11 May 2014 Posted 11 May 2014 Lets face it, we really aren't going to be that solid. Favouring Shaw over Cole makes me think Hodgson might even be doing the unthinkable and actually going for it...
Guest Kopfkino Posted 11 May 2014 Posted 11 May 2014 Can't blame Roy for taking Shaw and it's nice to see but I would probably have chosen Cole. If Baines was to get injured and we faced a knockout game against one of the better teams, I'd be more confident with the experience of Cole. Had Shaw been part of the England squad a bit more then maybe my preference would be towards him but a World Cup where we're struggling for decent players defensively isn't necessarily the time to throw him in

Guest ttfn Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 Glen Johnson is fine. He had an absolute nightmare last week for 10 minutes against Palace, but otherwise he's a reasonable (by no means great) right back. If Hodgson has got any sense, Jones and Milner will be ahead of Smalling in the pecking order for that position too.
Guest MattP Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 That selection of defenders is appalling. We need players who can keep the ball as well, the game is so different in South America, altitude and humidity will leave us knackered if they go off at the pace they play at in the EPL.

Flanagan has mate, played at right back quite a bit under Kenny. Dan LCFC is Wilshire definitely not going?
Grandad. Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 I wouldn't take Lampard either. Me neither, that is a poor selection from Roy.

AjcW Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 The Flannagan shout is a good one, i've been saying it for a while, he is versatile and until this season was considered to be a right back. Also, we have three warm up games before hand so even if he selects a few uncapped players they have time to gel. The Ashley Cole decision is the correct one, has had a stop start season and was absolutely shocking against Madrid. Anyone who has a go at Roy today needs to have a word with themselves, he's doing the best with what he has and he's the only England manager in years with the balls to select young and uncapped players. Good odd's on Gareth Barry at the minute too

Grandad. Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 Surprised that James McCarthy from Everton hasn't had a mention, had a much better season than Barry..
