Grandad. Posted 20 May 2014 Posted 20 May 2014 That aint Kieran Gibbs. Unless im missing the joke, which wouldnt be unlikely. You've missed the joke, take your mind back to the Chelsea Arsenal game where Gibbs was sent off wrongly instead of Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Footballwipe Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 I think the doom and gloom has been shifted slightly with the squad and the potential line-ups now developing. The progression of Barkley and Lallana this season has been a godsend to both the England team and fans hopes this summer. We have fresh, incisive and exciting players who could offer much if they're coached right and tactically tooled up, where Neville and Sky Sports (inadvertently) could come in handy. Just for the sake of maintaining interest in the tournament to the broadcasters, media and fans I really want us to at least get out of the group. Realistically we won't go on from there, and a QF appearance will be an achievement, I think we can all say that. My memory goes back to 2004 and 2006, the height of expectation and belief. I remember flags everywhere, those bastard car flags everywhere, England shirts, belief, excitement and anticipation for the next game. A good start against Italy and hopefully that can be recreated in some way. Not so expectations spiral out of control, but genuine belief that we can go into a knockout game and win it. We haven't been able to do that since 2006, who actually expected us to beat Germany and Italy in 2010 and 2012? Expectations are low. Use it to your advantage England.

Quite a lot of people, the whole of the BBC for one.
Grandad. Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 I'm a fool, now the season has ended and the World Cup is getting ever closer I am starting to get sucked into believing we could do something special at this World Cup, just because nothing is expected. We will beat Italy and then the whole country will get right behind us!
The Year Of The Fox Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Let's just keep Rooney where he belongs- at the top end of the pitch. He is our best striker and you wouldn't really want anyone else with the ball arriving at his feet on the edge of the box. I do not want to see him in defence or even midfield ball hunting and trying to be the link to sturridge.

Rooney had always been great just behind the front man, getting involved in everything, he should be played just off Sturridge. When people hark back to 2004, when he had a great tournament, he wasn't playing as an out and out striker, he was slightly deeper, picking the ball up and running at defences, causing havoc. That's the Rooney we need back.

That's the Rooney we need back. I tend to agree but the main problem Rooney has is his discipline in the positioning he takes up. In a deeper role it gives you the licence to roam and drop deep to collect the ball, but Rooney seems to have a problem knowing when and when not to do this. I know the temptation is there for him to go looking for the ball when we are under the kosh, but quite simply he's more of a nuisance when he drops in to his own half than he is when he doesn't. With Gerrard and Henderson having fantastic seasons, there's absolutely no need for him to come all the way back to deep midfield. I think the roles of Lallana and Barkley are hugely important for us this summer. Lallana has the incredible ability to never give the ball away, which is something the Spanish have in abundance and our biggest hope in terms of playing retention football. Barkley is the fearless bull of a midfielder who will be all over the place, he can tackle, pass, go past players and will shoot on sight. If they are both playing then Rooney should play a more disciplined game and stay in the pocket between the oppositions midfield and defence, he is best suited there where he can turn on the ball and run. Him feeding balls in to Sturridge could be very potent and if you add Sterling in to the mix then the possibilities are very promising. So all in all, I want Rooney just off Sturridge with the licence to infiltrate the left, centre and right area just in front of their defence. As soon as he starts going south towards Gerrard then we're in for a battle yet again.
Simmo86 Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 According to reports this morning Suarez is a doubt for the World Cup after injuring his knee!

I agree about him not knowing when to drop deep looking for the ball and when not to, but I feel that's a bigger problem when he's the loan striker. He still comes looking for the ball, leaving the team with no focal point up top. I'd rather he be caught dropping back from that deeper role than the loan striker role.

Yeah I agree, I can see Roy v Italy playing Rooney upfront on his own and then coming deeper and it kills us when we do retain the ball.
Manwell Pablo Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Great news about Suarez , best case scenario he's going to be struggling for fitness and worst could miss the tournament all together.
Bert Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 I just hope we play Sturridge as the striker because Rooney will drop deep regardless of where he plays. Hopefully we'll go into it all without any fear because if we do then we will surprise people.
Grandad. Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 The more and more I think about it I don't think Sturridge will start v Italy. Some online report (yeah I know they're nothing to go by) that England were setting up like this in a training session yesterday, for some time.. Hart Johnson -- Cahill -- Jagielka -- Baines Gerrard Milner -- Henderson -- Wilshire -- Lallana Rooney Obviously that is just a training session but I wouldn't be too surprised if that is the eleven to start v Italy.
AKCJ Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Right then, who will progress through each group? Champions first, then runners up. Brazil Croatia Spain Holland Columbia Ivory Coast Italy Uruguay France Switzerland Argentina Boznia Germany Portugal Belgium Korea
Samilktray Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 I think we'd be foolish not to start at least 1 of Sterling or Sturridge against Italy. Although Sterling could be good off the bench if Italy are tiring.

Haha, I know mate. I personally wouldn't go for that but that is what is being tipped, three weeks before the game! Obviously a lot can change..

I personally wouldn't go for that but that is what is being tipped, three weeks before the game! Obviously a lot can change.. Yeah true. That team just shows we're scared of Italy imo, bothering too much about stopping them do anything as opposed to trying to actually do something positive ourselves. Gonna be loads more chat about the first team I'm sure, just want to fast forward to that weekend already!

Think the Peru game a week tomorrow will give us a good indication.
ScouseFox Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 if we line up like that trying to match their game and not play our own it'll just be like 2012 all over again, they'll have 30+ shots and we'll have to be very lucky not to lose. i think it's more likely that we line up attacking with barkley, sterling, sturridge etc and win 4-3 than line up like that and win 1-0. forgot about these friendlies haha, next week the first one isn't it? never really care much for them but now we're still struggling to guess what our starting line up might be i guess more people will be keeping a closer eye on them.
C-man Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Hart Johnson ( ) Cahill Jagielka Shaw Henderson Gerrard Sterling Barkley Lallana Sturridge No place for Rooney for me. Not nearly been good enough since 2011/12 to deserve a spot ahead of Sturridge or the three behind.
Grandad. Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Johnson ( ) My face as well when typing his name out mate, so glad we have stalled on giving him a contract extension.
C-man Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 My face as well when typing his name out mate, so glad we have stalled on giving him a contract extension. I would 100% rather play Flanagan there, even if he has spent most of the season covering the other side. That team would massively excite me. We have absolutely zero chance if we set up defensively but reckon that team could see us tournament top-scorers: balance, togetherness, youth, naivety, creativity and speed = goals, goals, goals!
