Footballwipe Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 The Suarez news has bought the wonderful Liverpool fans out of the woodwork who are disappointed and still hope he's fit so he can 'stick a few past England' and tear us a new one.
Grandad. Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 The Suarez news has bought the wonderful Liverpool fans out of the woodwork who are disappointed and still hope he's fit so he can 'stick a few past England' and tear us a new one. I love Luis Suarez nearly as much as I do Steven Gerrard, but I would never ever want him to score v England. Never!
Ric Flair Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 The more and more I think about it I don't think Sturridge will start v Italy. Some online report (yeah I know they're nothing to go by) that England were setting up like this in a training session yesterday, for some time.. Hart Johnson -- Cahill -- Jagielka -- Baines Gerrard Milner -- Henderson -- Wilshire -- Lallana Rooney Obviously that is just a training session but I wouldn't be too surprised if that is the eleven to start v Italy. I will be furious if that's how we line up, what's the point? You don't need to contain Italy like that, perhaps against the likes of Argentina, Germany and Spain who will have us chasing shadows. Italy play a very turgid possession game that's slow. With players like Sterling, Barkley, Sturridge and Lallana we could really upset them and un-do their very tight defence. Wilshere deserves a place on the bench at best from this seasons showing, i'm all for having Gerrard and Hnederson sitting deep and i'd even accept Milner to a certain extent but we must have at least 2 creative players in behind either Rooney or Sturridge. I still get the feeling Hodgson is fighting his negative insticts, he's always been a defensive manager and that just doesn't work, not when your defence is your weakness and your attack looks to be your strongest part of the squad.
Guest ttfn Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Milner should be in the first XI against any team we're going to be struggling against technically. He's not just a bundle of energy, he's pretty good technically too. I can see him, Gerrard and Wilshere/Henderson in a 3, but please not all 4.
Jimothy Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 “It’s a bit weird because we don’t really hang out as friends, plus I didn’t realise he was really into that kind of thing but he was adamant I had to try bungee jumping, paragliding, rock climbing and quad biking. He’s sent message after message really pushing for me to come on this day out. Apparently Ross Barkley, [$tevie Mbe], Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana, James Milner, the Ox, Jack Wilshere and Raheem Sterling are invited too. I guess I might go. It sounds like a decent group, not brilliant but pretty good†– Frank Lampard reveals that Michael Carrick, who is not in Mr Roy’s World Cup squad, has invited pretty much every England midfielder who is in it on a big day out doing the kind of things that could knack a player in moments. Funny that.
The Doctor Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Injure everyone else in his position so he gets the call - clever bastard.
AjcW Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Squad Numbers (probably mean nothing but media is reading into it ) 1 Joe Hart 2 Glen Johnson 3 Leighton Baines 4 Steven Gerrard 5 Gary Cahill 6 Phil Jagielka 7 Jack Wilshere 8 Frank Lampard 9 Daniel Sturridge 10 Wayne Rooney 11 Danny Welbeck 12 Chris Smalling 13 Ben Foster 14 Jordan Henderson 15 Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 16 Phil Jones 17 James Milner 18 Rickie Lambert 19 Raheem Sterling 20 Adam Lallana 21 Ross Barkley 22 Fraser Forster 23 Luke Shaw

All 3 will light it up boys!!
Jimothy Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Lampard and The Ox have got their club numbers, so probably totally meaningless. EDIT: And Smalling too.
Grandad. Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Lampard 8 sells more shirts than Lampard 16. Hendo has his club number as well, like someone has said, means nothing but the media will have a field day..
Dan Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 That team posted up on the last page is worrying. If we set up like that then the best we can hope for is scraping a draw. It would be classic England to blow probably our most exciting looking attack in a long time by playing defensively.
Grandad. Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Hopefully this is where Gary Neville will take some control and drum into Roy's head that negativity won't get us anywhere.
Mikey Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 Don't buy into this that Rooney should be dropped because his form hasn't been good this season. 17 goals and 10 assists in 27 games, in the poorest United team of my lifetime. Yeah, well shit.

Yeah, well shit. I wouldn't drop him either, I would just make sure I played Sturridge with him. Nothing worse watching England than when Rooney is a lone striker and you see him coming deep because he isn't getting any of the ball. We have no crabs in the side this year though, so when your deepest midfielder (Gerrard) will look to go forward everytime he picks the ball up it should be refreshing to watch,
Beliall Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 If our players can reproduce their league form, we might do well. Trouble is we always seem to implode.

Rooney normally feels the need to drop when the midfield isn't doing there job properly. Like you say, hopefully with the positive midfielders we've got in the squad he should be alright to stay in that little pocket behind Sturridge where he plays best.
foxes_rule1978 Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 Imagine if we somehow got lucky and won it. Would be amazing, not impossible, Greece won the euros. And we have more quality than that side... slim but I can dream
Leicesterpool Posted 25 May 2014 Posted 25 May 2014 Anything can happen, you are allowed to dream however you look at even the top European nations I can see them struggling in Brazil, will be lucky to see any european nation to reach the semi's. However like euro 2012 we should go into the tournament relaxed and pressure free then we can enjoy it more. Otherwise like in South Africa we set the expectations too high and the pressure got to them very quickly.
theessexfox Posted 27 May 2014 Posted 27 May 2014 Anybody see Venables' side on SSN? Dreadful Its just got Lampard in for Sterling in most of the sides on here, which although I don't agree with, is hardly dreadful. EDIT: Saying that, it does seem very defensive: Hart Johnson Jagielka Cahill Baines Gerrard Henderson Lampard Rooney Sturridge Lallana

filbertway Posted 5 June 2014 Posted 5 June 2014 Hart Johnson Jagielka Cahill Baines Henderson GerrardOx/Lallana Barkley Sterling Sturridge Being able to bring on a player like Rooney who would feel he has a point to prove would be absolutely massive. Absolutely loved Barkley last night, made the Ecuadorians look like amateurs at times. The only thing that let him down was that he didn't pull the trigger when he had the opportunity, he's scored some belters for Everton this season. It would be great to see him have the confidence to do it for country as well. Maybe with more game time he'll feel he can shoot more often. Edited to say, I was hoping Milner would slot in well last night, but his positioning looked suspect. If you're going to play a right back lacking position sense, then go for the one with the physical attributes to recover situations.
AKCJ Posted 5 June 2014 Posted 5 June 2014 Didn't want to start a new thread.. Have a go at this, brilliant quiz. http://www.sporcle.com/games/Freddie/international-football-xis-england Got 92%. Enjoyed that. Forgot about Darren Bent, Tom Cleverley (assumed they were all 4-4-2 so I was thinking for a striker for 2012) , Aaron Lennon, Matt Upson (sorry), Wes Brown, Micah Richards, Nicky Barmby, Martin Keown (annoyed me that I forgot him), Teddy Sheringham (although it turns out I just mis-spelt it), Peter Beardsley, David Platt and Gary Pallister.
