Happy Fox Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 Shawcross should of been chosen been far better than the likes of Smalling etc.
purpleronnie Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 Seeing as nobody else has posted it. England squadGoalkeepers Joe Hart (Man City), Ben Foster (West Brom), Fraser Forster (Celtic). Defenders Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Chris Smalling (Man Utd), Phil Jones (Man Utd), Leighton Baines (Everton), Luke Shaw (Southampton).Midfielders Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), James Milner (Man City), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal), Ross Barkley (Everton), Adam Lallana (Southampton), Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal).Forwards Wayne Rooney (Man Utd), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Danny Welbeck (Man Utd), Rickie Lambert (Southampton). Stand-bys John Ruddy (Norwich), Jon Flanagan (Liverpool), John Stones (Everton), Michael Carrick (Man Utd), Tom Cleverley (Man Utd), Andy Carroll (West Ham), Jermain Defoe (Toronto). That'll get brazil, spain, germany quaking in their designer boots.
Corky Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 The right midfielder will be Milner. Don't get why other people are predicting anything different. He's an automatic choice because Roy is defensive and boring. The attackers list, apart from Rooney, is depressing. As is the defenders list. I still would have taken Cole who remains better defensively than Baines and Shaw. And I would have taken Carrick, I know he's had a poor season but he holds the ball well and knows how to find a player with a pass. He's started 26 of his 45 caps.
kingfox Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 Where the fook is Mark Noble??? Joking aside... Bloody Smalling really pissed off that Hodgson didn't include Jon Flanagan, I know he is on Standby, but with him capable of covering both right-back & left-back, and a far better footballer than Chris Smalling he should be going instead of that useless tit. I don't mind Lampard being picked, but with Hodgson saying he is looking to the future, you have two Hull City midfielders who have done well this season, in Huddlestone & Livermore yet both get overlooked. Strikers wise, I don't mind Welbeck, he hasn't done too bad for England in recent games, but I'm really gutted that Jay Rodriguez is injured, like Adam Lallana, he has had an excellent season, and if he was fit I would of taken him instead of Lambert.
Super_horns Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 Like the attacking threat in the squad - not about the defensive cover and the stand by list but probably not too many options! Lets hope the young guys take their form into the Italy game and show no fear.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 Flanagan's alright from what I've seen and definitely should've got the nod over Smalling. Think most international refs would view some of his challenges as worthy of an early bath mind.
Leicesterpool Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 Flanagan's alright from what I've seen and definitely should've got the nod over Smalling. Think most international refs would view some of his challenges as worthy of an early bath mind. There's dozens of better english defenders than Smalling. As somebody else mentioned if he didn't play for Man U he wouldn't have got picked.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 I understand why Roy's picked Jones, somebody that can operate at a semi decent level in four different positions shouldn't be overlooked nonchalantly and I'm still convinced he's got enough about him to go somewhere, he's young enough to come on. Smalling needs binning desperately though, he's a lost cause and woefully turgid. Rooney's never done anything of note in a big tournament, other than get himself sent off and prove what a petulant child he is. Did I dream Euro 2004? I agree with the nucleus of your post about perhaps taking Rooney out of the side and building a team in a different manner but people need to stop fabricating arguments to reinforce their cases against him. He's still a bloody good footballer.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 Rooney's never done anything of note in a big tournament Er, has anybody for 50 years? Certainly none of that cringe-worthy "Golden Generation".
Danno Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 Ryan Shawcross for England? Shawcross and Shackell to lead us to glory.
65RosesFox Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 Can't think of any centre back apart from those selected, maybe Stones but he's only been playing consistently for about 3 months. Curtis Davies, Jon Stones, Stephen Caulker, Joleon Lescott...hell, i'd even look at Jason Shackell before him. Michael Dawson
Bryn Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 People whining about not picking players based on form then putting they'd drop Rooney need their head looking at. Hart Johnson Cahill Jagielka Baines Henderson Gerrard Sterling Rooney Lallana Sturridge
65RosesFox Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 For me its Rooney that makes it depressing. Sturridge Sterling Lallana Barkley I think these make it a very exciting attacking line up Lets be honest we all know the team will be built around superstar talisman Rooney even though in our likely formation (4-2-3-1) there's not a single position he's current the most in-form player. I definitely agree with whoever said that if Smalling was at Hull and Davies was at Man Utd then Davies would go. Yeah Rooney has been awful this season with his 17 goals and 10 assists. Yes he's not performed in previous international tournaments but neither have England so don't judge him by that. Judge him on what he has done this season, and being England's second highest scorer this season he deserves his place in the starting line up. Personally i'd play this: Hart Johnson cahill jagielka baines Gerrard henderson Sturrdige barkley lallana Rooney Sturrdige has played behind suarez a lot this season rather than up top with him, so he's familiar with the role. And depending on any of the front four who are not performing bring on sterling, ox, wilshere and change the positions slightly depending on who is coming off.
65RosesFox Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 No So you're are telling me Chris Smalling is a better defender than Michael Dawson?
Tom17LCFC Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 Hart Walker Cahill Jones Cole Gerrard Wilshere Sterling Rooney Oxlade Sturridge Baines for Cole and Johnson for Walker then.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 People whining about not picking players based on form then putting they'd drop Rooney need their head looking at. Hart Johnson Cahill Jagielka Baines Henderson Gerrard Sterling Rooney Lallana Sturridge Looking at that side, we aren't that bad, really - are we? Post WC I'd imagine Flanagan making the RB spot his own and Stones coming in for Jags at centre half if he keeps playing at a steady standard at Everton, Walcott to come back from injury too. Things don't look anywhere near as bleak as they did a year or so ago. So you're are telling me Chris Smalling is a better defender than Michael Dawson? I'd rather have ****ing Les Dawson than Michael Dawson. #banter #BPL
Stadt Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 So you're are telling me Chris Smalling is a better defender than Michael Dawson? They're both shit, Dawson is guaranteed to make at least one mistake a game.
Fox92 Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 He's started 26 of his 45 caps. Regardless of that, he will start. Especially against Uruguay and Italy.
RowlattsFox Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 Smalling, jones and welbeck all played their part in qualifying. Stones and Flanagan are probably more confident at the minute but have played less than full season in premier league, particularly stones. Jones and smalling had exceptional starts to their careers, but have stuttered recently who's to say stones and Flanagan wont go the same way? If cole had played all season, he would be going. Not sure on Lampard but not other than Carrick there's not much else in midfield. Reasonably happy the squad, not much else to add for me. Defence was always going to be a problem, regardless of who was chosen. The bigger question is how we set up and play rather than who is being played.
Samilktray Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 I feel like I'm the only person excited about the England team this summer. A lot of interesting players in that squad. Lallana, Barkley, Sterling & Sturridge are all players who I'm intrigued to see out there this summer.
Matt Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 I feel like I'm the only person excited about the England team this summer. A lot of interesting players in that squad. Lallana, Barkley, Sterling & Sturridge are all players who I'm intrigued to see out there this summer. I keep saying it and I beleive it, the group stage is the hard part for us this time, if we get through the group stage I beleive we can go far, but i'm not expected us to pull up any trees - obviously I hope we do though. Quite impressed with the squad, I'd have probably tried to shoehorn Flanagan in somehow and I wouldn't have put Smalling or Jones in but on a whole though it's probably the best we've got and you can only work with the tools you are given. Last Euro's no-one expected much, there wasn't as much pressure as in past tournaments and it benefitted us, I think we did alot better than anyone expected and they quite impressed me in the Euro's, hopefully we will have the same build up, expect nothing - be surprised perhaps thats how I go into tournaments as an England supporter.
Tielemans63 Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 I'm excited by the potential in midfield but that is outweighed by the relative shitness of the defence.
