MPH Posted 1 March 2014 Posted 1 March 2014 Fifa allows wearing of head covers for religious reasons Fifa has officially authorised the wearing of head covers for religious reasons during football matches. The ruling was made following a meeting of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) in Zurich and will apply to male and female players. The wearing of head covers had been banned, but a two-year trial started in 2012 has proved successful. "It was decided that female players can cover their heads to play," said Fifa secretary general Jerome Valcke. "Male players can play with head covers too. It will be a basic head cover and the colour should be the same as the team jersey." In 2011, Iran's women's team withdrew from an Olympic qualification match against Jordan in protest at not being allowed to wear headscarves. There have also been calls from the Sikh community in Canada for the ban on the wearing of turbans to be lifted. World football's governing body, Fifa, had claimed the wearing of head covers while playing competitive football posed too great a risk of injury to the head or neck. However, following a request from the Asian Football Confederation, the IFAB allowed for their safety to be tested during the trial. At the annual general meeting at Fifa's headquarters, IFAB members also voted to introduce a new law that will punish players who display messages on T-shirts underneath their club's kit. The rule change, which will come into effect from 1 June, amends Law 4 of the game, which relates to players' equipment. http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/26398297 Unless I am missing something... why were they banned in the first place?
Strokes Posted 1 March 2014 Posted 1 March 2014 http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/26398297 Unless I am missing something... why were they banned in the first place? You could argue they interfere with play at a push I guess, other that that
AndWhat? Posted 2 March 2014 Posted 2 March 2014 Didn't they find out that 3 blokes were playing for the Iranian national women's team? No one realised cause they all had their whole bodies covered apart from their faces. There is a picture online somewhere but can't post it on my phone.
AyewJoking Posted 2 March 2014 Posted 2 March 2014 hats off to Fifa for letting players keep their hats on.

Ummm... only half accurate. 3 men were in the process of going through sex changes and hadn't 'bacame' women yet... but were playing for the women's team... so yeah they still shouldn't of been playing for the women's team...
Mike the Metal Ed Posted 3 March 2014 Posted 3 March 2014 Lee Philpott wore a beanie hat during a snowy reserve game against Hull once. Anybody fancy joining me in starting a new religion?

Seen a few goalkeepers with baseball caps on quite recently to keep the sun out the eyes - isn't this allowed? Can't remember who though
Trav Le Bleu Posted 5 March 2014 Posted 5 March 2014 Great news! Indeed, I can't see why they had turban them in the first place.

Kitchandro Posted 5 March 2014 Posted 5 March 2014 http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/26398297 Unless I am missing something... why were they banned in the first place? The same reason snoods were banned, because it's a bloody ridiculous and unnecessary piece of attire.
Samilktray Posted 5 March 2014 Posted 5 March 2014 The same reason snoods were banned, because it's a bloody ridiculous and unnecessary piece of attire. You wouldnt be saying that if you had to play on a cold tuesday winters night in Moscow you punk.
Parafox Posted 6 March 2014 Posted 6 March 2014 Gloves, now hats. Scarves will be next. Maybe a club shirt in a fleece material.
DennisNedry Posted 6 March 2014 Posted 6 March 2014 I don't see a big problem, goalkeepers have been allowed to wear caps for ages.
MPH Posted 6 March 2014 Author Posted 6 March 2014 The same reason snoods were banned, because it's a bloody ridiculous and unnecessary piece of attire. That's really only your opinion. Nothing factual about what you said.
