Wigan Player Ratings

Kasper 8 - Made some very good saves tonight.

RDL 7 - Another solid display in defence and Attack.

Konch 6 - Could tell he hadn't played for a while. Schlupp first choice left back now.

Morgan 6 - wasn't so dominant as Wigan didn't lump it up as much as other teams. Up against a tricky player in Powell.

Moore 7 - Slotted straight back in like he'd never been away.

Knocky 6 - Worked hard but he's trying too much at the minute seems like he feels he has something to prove?

Dyer 6 - One good run in the second half but otherwise little else. Looked really tired.

Hammond 6 - Thought he was a bit of a liability when they broke quickly. Gave away a needless free kick and booking which lead to their goal but won us a point.

King 8 - My MOTM. Scored with a lovely goal and took on the Drinky role very well. Such a great player to have in the squad.

Wood 6 - Won a few flick ons but otherwise was never in the game.

Nuge 7 - Yet another assist. Didn't get as much of the ball into as normal tonight. Seems to create a lot of Space.

GTF 7 - He's a lovely footballer to watch. Intricate touches and for a big bloke is quite silky. Very good technically.

Mahrez 6 - Didn't really get into the game until the last ten where he set up Hammond. Missed another absolute sitter though.

Phillips 5 - Didn't do an awful lot.

A good foul according to Pearson post match.

Schmeichel - 7 - Some good saves but conceding from 2 set pieces is a recurring event.

RDL - 6 - Got caught out a couple of times making those runs of his.

Moore - 7 - Almost scored and had a generally good game.

Wes - 7 - MOTM - I think he's starting to show his form of last season again. He's been excellent recently.

Konch - 6 - Made some good moves in the first half but he can't cross for shit and is often left out of position. Doesn't happen with the energetic Schlupp who gets up and down the wing with ease.

Knocky - 7 - Everything but end product. Wanted to make things happen and I think it was only a matter of time that he would but Nige took him off to early IMO.

King - 5 - If he didn't score you'd have to convince me he played. Anonymous again.

Hammond - 5 - He just doesn't fit into our side from the start IMO. We play a very fast, free flowing game and he slows the game too much for me. Gave away the freekick for their first but at least he made up for it with the equaliser.

Dyer - 5 - Good first half but he was anonymous in the second when they marked him out of the game. Should have been replaced instead of Knocky. Looked tired, weirdly.

Nugent - 6 - I know he's our top scorer and assist maker but he goes missing so often. Missed a sitter in the first few minutes. Good ball to Kingy though.

Wood - 4 - Doesn't know how to play off Nuge when the ball is played long. They both go for the same ball. Poor touches, never looked like scoring. Would have replaced him with GTF, I think  Nuge and GTF play well together.

GTF - 5 - Didn't do much.

Mahrez - 6 - Similar to Knocky, a lot of effort and a desire but nothing came off. However excellent cross for Hammond's.

Phillips - 4 - Waste of time playing him if you're not playing him on the shoulder and in effective areas, he came deep so often when GTF should have.

Kasper 8 Pulled off some really top saves

De Laet 7 Solid, got forward well

Moore 8 As usual threw himself infront of everything, won everything in the air. Good display.

Morgan 7 Almost as good as Moore. Good display

Konch 5.5 Very little offensively and got beaten a few times too

Knockaert 6 Lost the ball so much. Nothing came off for him

Hammond 7 Great in the tackle. A bit one dimensional but did his job. One excellent block second half

King 7 Disappeared second half for quite a while but took his goal excellently. Did fine

Dyer 6 Worked hard, beat his man several times for pace

Wood 5 Crap

Nugent 5.5 Lethargic. Only scores higher than Wood for his assist

Mahrez 8 Made the difference. Love the way he keeps the ball for us- gives the rest of the team a breather at times. Great assist too.

GTF 7 Some nice touches

Phillips 7 As above

Kasper - 7

De Laet - 5 - They had a field day down our right and this was due to De Laet and Knocky being well off their game

Moore - 7 Solid

Morgan - 7 Solid

Konch- 6 Started well but looked a bit leggy towards the end

Knocky - 4 Let his left back past him every time and always tried to do too much, he couldn't have come off sooner

King - 7 Took his goal well and played the ball around very nicely

Hammond - 6 Kept the ball nicely but he let their midfield run at Morgan and Moore a bit too much for my liking

Dyer - 5/6 For 70 minutes, he was a 6, he gave us a fair option down the left but then he gave up for the last 20 minutes and looked like he couldn't be arsed

Nugent - 7 Great assist to Kingy and he played fairly well

Wood - 6 Didn't see a lot of the play but did a job when he did see it

Subs:

GTF - 7 Lovely footballer, today he showed that he can be an excellent creative player when he's on his game

Mahrez - 7 Takes a much better set piece than Knocky and looked sharp when he came on, the lad's got an excellent footballing brain

Phillips - 6 Not on that long but gave us something when he came on

I thought I'd have a go at this too-

Schmeichel 7 - one dodgy punch, but otherwise solid

De Laet 6 - winger got in behind him far too much, better going forward 2nd half

Konchesky 5 - out of position, short on pace, resorted to long ball too much

Moore 6 - decent enough, a few aberrations

Morgan 7 - pretty solid. Just about MOM

Knockaert 5 - very wasteful yet again but lots of energy. Statistically must be the worst set piece taker in the division

Hammond 6 - a plus one due to the goal, looks very immobile

King 6 - in and out of the game, the game will have done him good but I thought they cut through the centre of midfield far too easily

Dyer 6 - a few bursts of pace, did fine

Nugent 7 - played fine, good assist, didn't link well with Wood

Wood 5 - struggled with the long ball

--

Mahrez 7 - by no means a perfect cameo, but he really brought us to life and a decent assist. Why do players only take good set pieces for us when they're new to the club?

GTF 6 - actually did alright, I thought

Phillips 5 - no impact

De Laet had a great game: he was left isolated many times by our midfield, but the number of times he got his body in the way/ last ditch challenges in the box, excellent direct runs going forward (he was probably our main attacking threat)?!! His level of commitment and energy?!!

I must have been watching a different game to most on here!

Not me. He was excellent. As was Moore, Morgan and Mahrez when he came on.

Wow. Just wow. To both score and still get a 5 is pretty special.

AKCJ, some of those ratings are quite off the mark. Mahrez having a worse game than Knocky judging by your ratings? Not sure what you see there but Mahrez should be about 7 and Knockaert about 5/6. Knockaert did love a good run at defenders but for him nothing came off. Was wasteful ultimately, and lost the ball/didn't find a pass when it was easier to do. Mahrez on the other hand was able to be more economical with the ball and then you contradict yourself by saying 'nothing came off, however excellent cross for Hammond'. I think Mahrez made a lot of difference when he came on. Settled straight in and gave us a bit more urgency when needed.

To give Hammond and King 5 is pretty harsh too. Yeah they were quiet but they hadn't played for ages, let alone together for such a long time. They were obviously going to find it difficult, even more so against such a flowing Wigan side. And they ultimately got us back in to the game on 2 occasions. 5 is extremely harsh.

No, I can't agree with that. He made some decent attacking runs, especially in the second half, but his final ball was consistently poor. Their wingers frequently got round the back of our defence, sometimes down the right but more often than not down their left. Yes he was left exposed by Knockaert / King / Hammond, yes he put in some decent blocks but his positional sense was poor and it's surprising how often people get past him and run onto our centre halfs. And he was beaten from the corner for their second. So yes, think you must have seen a totally different game!

That said, he wasn't the only one from our more established players who struggled last night. And I maintain he is a very good Championship right back. Premier League? If we don't bring in competition for him in the summer, then it could well be a priority come the second half of next season.

KONCH 6 composed but lacked match fitness and didnt link up well with Dyer

KNOCKY 6  things didnt go well for him tonight but soon he will have a blinding good game

HANNOND 7 i thought he did well, not afraid to but his boot in broke up thier midfield and at least got close to the dangerous Gomez

WOOD 6 a shadow of the player who turned up on Saturday

1) Thought RDL and Morgan top performers on night, both got important blocks in. Say 8/10

2) Least impressive was Dyer 4/10 who went AWOL when needed in second half - he doesn't look totally fit to me.

3) The rest were average really, no spark except last 10 from Mahrez.

4) In defence of Hammond 6/10, I thought he did what Pearson brought him into do and that is break up play and protect the back four. He doesn't do creative.

5) Also Moore 6/10 is good defensively but distribution generally poor.

6) Every one else 5 or 6 out of 10.

Also the atmosphere in the stand struck me as strange last night, no real tension and some areas were sat down all game!!!! But we all had a good time, just stress free.

Only watched the game on a pretty shitty stream, but it was solid 6/7s for the whole team except maybe for De Laet, who was my Motm with his tireless efforts on the right flank. Knocky was our worst performer, as nothing worked for him and it was also him giving away the ball that led to Hammond's booking and their first goal.

Also, I'm developing a man crush for GTF. That guy is awesome, never loses the ball and always on the look for the killer pass.
