indierich06 Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/26920629 Out of all the managers to be sacked this season, only one replacement has managed to make any difference to his team's position when - Tony Pulis. If things get tough next season, I personally hope the Thais will back Nigel and the boys.
Fox92 Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 I generally think it's who you bring in as well. I mean, sacking Clarke and bringing in someone from Spain. Sacking AVB, fair play things weren't going well, and letting Sherwood - a good player in his day but a manager? - take over... Palace are about the only club that got it right, by bringing in a manager who established Stoke as a Premier League club as well as taking them into Europe and to the FA Cup final. I hope the board stick with Nige, I think they will. They had a decision to make at the end of last season and could have quite easily sacked him. Thankfully it's paid off now. But I just don't want everyone to get on Nige's back as I know some will. Premier League won't be easy, and there will be times when we're on the back of (big) defeats. As long as we get something from games against the likes of Villa, Stoke, Hull etc.
Dan Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 I'd stick with him because I think he's got certain qualities about him that are bigger to us in the long-term than say... being 18th after 15 games. Give him the season. His teams generally turn up for the big occasions (Forest away, Jimmy glass, Southampton when we went down) and even when they've lost, it's been by the finest possible margin. I lost some faith in him last year but this season he's replicated everything I liked about him and more. He really has earned a proper crack at the league and I hope we give him a proper backing too.
suffolk fox Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 It's the nature of the beast, unfortunately. It's the premier league. All about money and trying to stay there. Good managers regardless of their previous track records get sacked if their teams do not perform as owners have hoped. There are loads of examples of this going back years. Nigel has done a great job this season, proving me wrong I hasten to add. However, Terry Robinson, Craig Shakespeare deserve credit too. I am hopeful we can finish out of the relegation places but it isn't going to be easy. Will enjoy the moment whilst it Lasts it is going to be a hell of a ride.
Tielemans63 Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 I think they'll stick with him whatever, they did last season when things looked dodgy. They seem to trust him and understand the need for continuity.
RoxumJD Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 I've personally never lost faith in Pearson. The 2007-08 season was the worst I've ever seen and the squad we took down to League 1 that year was dreadful. He rebuilt the squad from top to bottom and achieving promotion back to the Championship in one season was an unbelievable effort! We should have never let him leave for Hull and after what happened when he left we should be so grateful he wanted to come back to finish the job! He must have questioned if it was the right call when Hull went up last year but going up this season as Champions will be just reward for everything he has done for us. As far as I'm concerned he has given us back our football club and whatever happens next year he should be given full backing by the owners (3 year contract) and the whole season to have a fair crack at the Premier League. Cheers Nigel (Shakey and Walsh)!
blueonyou Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 if we are at the bottom of the league this time next year I'd have a hard time arguying that NP should stay. It's the nature of the game
ThurnbyLodgeFox Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 if we are at the bottom of the league this time next year I'd have a hard time arguying that NP should stay. It's the nature of the gameWe won't be so there's no need to think like that!!
Sir Shep Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 There are about 8 really good teams and the rest frankly are no better than we are. In fact I would say that the EPL is about the weakest I've ever known it other than the bigger clubs who've basically become uncatchable. Sorry my point is that I think we will be fine, at least for the first season, may even win the league cup again.
lcfc1994 Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 When Southampton sacked Nigel Adkins I thought it was a ridiculous decision, they brought in pochettino (think that's correct) and look where they are now. I'd imagine Southampton fans wouldnt have minded just staying up, never mind sitting 8th place the season after. It's hard to say really I think it's just one of those things that can either work well or not at all.
Guest Sharpe's Fox Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 We really need a good start, being about 7 points clear from the bottom three by Christmas. This usually gets you big praise from the media making a managerial sacking look stupid for the rest of the season. If not, and we have a bad run, owners get trigger happy.
Freeman's Wharfer Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 If we give Pearson a three-year deal I'd hope gets at least two of them with complete backing. Even if we go straight back down with a record low points total there are few managers I'd trust more to get us straight back up in good health, particularly when there's parachute payments to be frittered away. I am more convinced than last time that we'll stay up however. Hopefully this could be the start of the Pearson years just like we had the O'Neill years...
Corky Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 He'll be fine, he's never finished below sixth in a full season with us and I don't see it changing
Thracian Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/26920629 Out of all the managers to be sacked this season, only one replacement has managed to make any difference to his team's position when - Tony Pulis. If things get tough next season, I personally hope the Thais will back Nigel and the boys. "If" doesn't come into it. Things will be tough and it's hard to imagine the season will be anything more than one of trying to establish ourselves rather as Southampton have done. But Pearson's already remarked that preparations for The Premiership have been ongoing for some time so I'm sure we won't be caught cold and that certain signings will be agreed or virtually already. For me a place in the top two thirds of the League will be progress and anything above halfway seriously encouraging. That's not to say we can't punch above our weight. Even a 25% improvement in the squad we have at present - four or five players - could make a significant difference if they are the right players and if we can maintain our clan-spirit whatever the situation. The biggest challenge will be recognising and improving on our weaknesses, some of which are still significant. I don't intend to list them all but the biggest are a) to improve our return from set-plays and b) to improve our passing speed, accuracy and decision-making under pressure.
MattyFromLE Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 Thing is, they've already shown patience, and look where that got us! I can't imagine them being trigger happy, unless we're REALLY bad.
LanguedocFox Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 if we are at the bottom of the league this time next year I'd have a hard time arguying that NP should stay. It's the nature of the game I will have a very easy time arguing that he should stay - look at his stats. If we go down next season, I have no doubt he will bring us back up, even stronger and better for the experience.
Russell sprout Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 It's not the board I'm worried about... Me neither :-)
Fox Ulike Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 if we are at the bottom of the league this time next year I'd have a hard time arguying that NP should stay. It's the nature of the game No it's the nature of the fans, not the game, that you are describing. The nature of the game is that continuity and stability breeds success, and that success is rarely achieved over night. Look at the difference between Arsenal and Manchester United this season. The nature of fans is that, collectively, they are morons. Despite the last 2.5 years some fans have learnt nothing. They still believe that sacking the manager is a silver bullet - despite a wealth of evidence to the contrary. The recent criticism flung at Pearson for changing the team at Wigan (not losing the game, mind you, just changing the team) illustrates that some fans are just waiting for him to slip up.
hackneyfox Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 Continuity and stability breeds success? That only works if you have a decent manager in place who knows what he's doing at the level you're playing at. Most of the managers we've had over the last 10 years should have been sacked quicker.
bovril Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 There are about 8 really good teams and the rest frankly are no better than we are. Sorry my point is that I think we will be fine, at least for the first season, may even win the league cup again. Not sure about that. We scraped past a Fulham reserve team. I think teams like Norwich and Villa seem worse than they are when we see them getting spanked on TV. At the moment I don't think you could say our squad is as good as 12 Prem teams. A few additions and we could give a go for sure, but....
