Kevin ''Rooster'' Russell- Still very much alive

How many fans remember this genuine cult hero of the early 90s?

He was a journeyman footballer who moved from club to club up and down the country, ''to one thing constant never''.

The bare statistics of his City career however don't begin to tell the tale of his impact on the club's fortunes between 1990 and 1992.

He started 30 games in all and made 19 appearances as a sub between August 1989 and May 1992, scoring 12 goals. So an average of 10 games and 4 goals a season.

But anyone who was a Filbert Street regular during those days will tell you that there was no finer sight than seeing the bald-headed Rooster come off the bench and score a vital late winner.

I have great memories of him scoring the winner against Middlesbrough at home in the 90/91 season in his comeback game, a result which was crucial to us staying up that year. And in the 91/92 season, after sending him out on loan, Brian Little brought him back into the side as performances dipped and our play-off position seemed in doubt.

The Rooster scored two magnificent winners in successive 1-0 victories over Tranmere and Blackburn which ensured that we would compete in the play-offs for the first time.

His last goal came in the joyous, euphoric 5-0 Play-Off semi against Cambridge in May 1992 when we got back to Wembley for the first time since 1969 and his last game was in the final itself when we lost to Blackburn.

Many players have played far more games and scored far more goals for us than the Rooster, But for me, whenever I think of those two contrasting seasons of 1990/91 and 1991/92, I think of the Rooster, of how all our hopes depended on him and of how he never let us down.

Can people please include more than just an ex player's name in a thread title, every time I see one I think the player in question has died or something bad has happened.

Is it just me or does anyone else think that?

He's Little Ferguson's assistant at Posh these days.

I didn't know that but I think he played for Peterborough at some point. I hope the Posh go up then, if only for old time's sake.

Him and Tommy Wright in the same team was a dream.

I think it's probably just you. After all, if you read lots of players' names in a thread title and none of them have died there must come a time when you will realise that they are acts of homage and recollection rather than obituaries.

However, if I do start a thread about an ex-player who has recently passed away I will include the abbreviation RIP in the title for the avoidance of your apprehensions.

I was 6 when my love for City started. Him and Tommy Wright were like gods to me!

My first ever away trip was the Blackburn game when we played in the red away kit. Rooster scored the late winner and I can still picture everyone going mental!

That whole away trip experience is what got me hooked....Learnt a few new words that day also!

Spent the next few weeks running around shouting ROOOOOOOOOSTER!

We loaned him to Peterborough ourselves.

Russell joined Wrexham at the same time as Ferguson and I think that's where the link was.

First home game I went to (91 I guess) Rooster came off the bench and the stadium went mad. Don't think he contributed much, but every touch got the heart racing and the noise cranked up. Legend. Him and Tommy Wright were the boys before I really got what was going on...

ROOSTER, ROOSTER, ROOSTER...

Blackburn away 0-1 (Russell) - Best away day ever, it was perfect.

Wasn't there but when I saw his name that's the game I think off.

Who changed my thread title then? Surely only the author of the thread is able to that. Wonders will never cease.

Moderators can change pretty much anything tbh. They can edit peoples posts, thread titles, remove peoples display pics, the lot provided it's in their sections (assuming this forum uses vbBulletin; if not I'm not sure on the workings but would assume it's the same)

The winner against Tranmere and Filbert Street outside being filled with shouts of ROOOOOOOSTER!

Him and Tommy were my first real heroes at the club after about 4 years of having shit all to shout about. Didn't know he was at Posh, thought he was still connected with Wrexham.
