FoxesAreBlue Posted 16 April 2014 Posted 16 April 2014 Mrs Magoo says were sexist, but what I wanna know is; whilst she here telling us this, who's in the kitchen making her husbands dinner? Nick Posted 16 April 2014 Posted 16 April 2014 Mrs Magoo says were sexist, but what I wanna know is; whilst she here telling us this, who's in the kitchen making her husbands dinner? http://www.ohchr.org/en/Issues/Women/SRWomen/Pages/RashidaManjoo.aspx That's her biography page - particularly impressive really. I'm not sure where she is saying anybody is sexist? She writes predominantly on gender based violence issues, inclusive of violence against women, by women.
MooseBreath Posted 16 April 2014 Posted 16 April 2014 She says we're the most sexist country in the world. An incredible conclusion on multiple levels. So much so that you can't help but suspect that generating publicity for whatever reason was top of her agenda. But the most depressing thing about it is that it probably cost thousands of pounds of tax payer money to have a south african spend a couple of days in a culture she has no understanding of whatsoever and producing a report of absolutely no value to anyone.
Parafox Posted 16 April 2014 Posted 16 April 2014 That made me so angry I had to go beat up my missus.
Nick Posted 16 April 2014 Posted 16 April 2014 She says we're the most sexist country in the world. Got a link?
ADK Posted 16 April 2014 Posted 16 April 2014 Surely somewhere like Saudi Arabia that bans women from driving would be slightly more sexist?
Finnegan Posted 16 April 2014 Posted 16 April 2014 Most sexist country in the world?!? lol More than the States, where all the porn and Snoop Dogg come from? Japan, where women need their own train carriages to avoid sexual assault and Saudi Arabia where... well, shit. Wow.
Fox92 Posted 16 April 2014 Posted 16 April 2014 Perception are still there imo... I mean, women cook and clean, however, men are still seen to clean the car and clean the windows. Etc.
cambridgefox Posted 16 April 2014 Posted 16 April 2014 Going back a few years when I was in Australia, they rated fairly highly on the sexist front. How about " darling,my glass is empty ( shakes ice in empty glass for attention)what the hell are you doing, because you're also late with the dinner" and this was from the bloke to his wife that I was staying with.it was a constant stream from him and his mates. He was a really nice bloke and cared for me while I was there and his mrs didn't want for anything( perhaps a maid/ servant)stinking rich ,had his own plane, several houses but him and his mates had sexism Tourette's ! It was so bad it was hilarious .Wasnt a class thing.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 16 April 2014 Author Posted 16 April 2014 Sorry guys wrong link - and I'm at work now. The story is in the metro.
Nick Posted 16 April 2014 Posted 16 April 2014 She says we're the most sexist country in the world. No she didn't. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-27034117 She said that sexism in this country is more 'pervasive' than any other countries - which is slightly different.

Finnegan Posted 16 April 2014 Posted 16 April 2014 Surely violence against anyone is unacceptable whether they're a woman or not? And I still don't see how we can be considered any worse than the Septics for portrayals of women as sex objects in the media when we get most of our popular media from them anyway.
Merging Cultures Posted 16 April 2014 Posted 16 April 2014 Clearly she hasn't spent much time in her own country outside Cape Town! South Africa is extremely sexist. It also has one of the worst rates of rape and violence against women in the world. Seems her 'research' was very lightweight. Pointless report.
bmt Posted 16 April 2014 Posted 16 April 2014 To be fair, whilst I agree our country is not one of the most sexist (having spent half a year in Australia), it still isn't exactly right and just because we aren't the main culprits doesn't mean we couldn't improve. Having read the article the title is completely misleading.
Guest MattP Posted 16 April 2014 Posted 16 April 2014 You would think if she was such an expert she would be sorting her own countries problems out. Ludicrous accusations anyway and should be brushed off by anyone who has done a bit of travelling or has any knowledge of the World. I'm getting sick of having nonsense like this thrown in my face all the time, it's probably encouraging sexism. Cancelled my subscription to All Out Cricket magazine this month after they pledged to split the magazine 50-50 between the men and women's game. Why do you never see a good looking feminist either? It's clearly a political viewpoint that comes from a consequence of being shunned by men for years. Take your revenge by grabbing your dungarees, throw away your razor and shower and spout guff like this.
AoWW Posted 16 April 2014 Posted 16 April 2014 I've experienced much more sexism in countries other than the UK. Generally I don't think it's too bad here. The UK's somewhat 'traditional' in its view of the woman's role, perhaps, and you'll always find sexist individuals, but I do think women can be ridiculously over-sensitive about it too. Just don't call me 'dear'.

AoWW Posted 16 April 2014 Posted 16 April 2014 No worries duck. You see, duck doesn't offend me - I lived in Leicester long enough for it to be, erm, water off a duck's back. 'Dear' isn't sexist as such, just patronising. Sugar tits? Have we met?

Take your revenge by grabbing your dungarees, throw away your razor and shower and spout guff like this. Why do they have to be good looking? Surely actually making a political point depends more on what you say than having blokes agree with every word you say just because you look like Heidi Klum? And would those blokes take a feminist seriously if she did? Can't win either way. Definitely don't agree with her hyperbole here (sexism is nowhere near as bad here as in other places, take the vast majority of Wahabist countries as the obvious example and gender roles here in South Korea are ridiculously strictly enforced) but sexism/male privilege/whatever you want to call it is still a problem in the UK despite the denial. The societal pressuring and enforcing of gender roles - whether or not they are wanted by the person in question - being the obvious example.

And would those blokes take a feminist seriously if she did? Can't win either way. Because I'm saying it's a consequence of the way she looks that may have led her to these views, we've all seen the classic pictures of the ugly feminist holding a sign saying "don't objectify women" stood next to load of stunners who don't mind taking their kit off for a few bob. Works both ways as well, you get these sick men who think women are objects, getting off on extreme porn and we should be able to do as we please from them, they probably hold the same insecurities just the other way around.
