I think we'll beat Italy, it's all set up for us to do so in my dubious logic. June 14th is an absolute humdinger of a day of football with 4 games being shown and the whole country in party mode.

And I'm going to be on an island in Finland with no electricity. What a shitter.

Problem was the heat did us that day big time, we were absolutely garried by half time. 2nd half we were so lethargic and when they went down to 10 men it made absolutely no difference. I hope we can handle such conditions better this time around, completely different conditions but there will be the heat factor in some locations.

Yeah, it was after you said we would bull hammer Japan that made me think of 2002 as we could get Brazil again, in the last 16 of 2002 we absolutely romped Denmark didn't we 3-0 at half time.

I think this group of players will deal with the conditions better than in 2002, we had a half fit Beckham then Scholes, Butt and Sinclair, looking back Eriksson didn't change the midfield until 56 minutes and that was bringing Dyer on for Sinclair, no surprise Beckham, Scholes and Butt struggled, that was an early game as well in the baking Shizuoka heat!

Marshall, give your head a wobble!!!! Terrible decision, I hope there's scandinavian vagina on tap instead?

Our midfield options that year were scandalous really, as you say Beckham was so integral to our reputation as ateam that Eriksson had to play him. He ran out of steam and we crumbled. I absolutely loved that tournament though, the hopes we had after doing Argentina and hammering a very decent Denmark.

Yeah looking bad they weren't the greatest, the fact Dyer was the sub off the bench said a lot, missed Gerrard massively that year, done that injury that every England player seemed to do.. Even missed Danny Murphy!

I think we'll do ok. The defence doesn't look strong so we're going to have to go for it, the first match will be cagey but afterwards we should play as open a game as we can.

Through as runners up, second round victory and a quarter-final defeat. Something to build on.

Really rate Hodgson - trust him a lot more than Sven and Capello tactically. We didn't have an easy group at the Euro's and got through that very well with a team that was not as good as what we have now.

We'll get out the group but no idea from there.

yeah gotta say i imagine the "we won't get a point in the group"-ers were the ones saying pretty much that in euro 2012, a group that we won comfortably. i'd say this group is probably harder because in 2012 we could rely on everyone beating everyone else (ie france losing to sweden to give us top spot) whereas this year you would imagine everyone will beat costa rica and it's just who does the better against the other top 2.

I was reading "The Story of the World Cup" by Brian Glanville the other day (thoroughly recommended) and it reminded me that Dyer (who was at that time a really good player but already injury prone) was preferred in the squad to Steve Mcmanaman.

Can you imagine us leaving a guy out of our WC squad today who'd just scored in a Champions League final? Our options were actually not bad - they seem pretty shit with hindsight but having Butt in there gave us greater balance than we've had at any World Cup since.

It's a Finnish friend's stag do! 25 men, booze, and probably saunas and birch branches knowing the Fins. Reflecting on it now it's going to be the most homoerotic weekend of my life (and that's saying something).

If we get through to the second round I'm missing it because Glastonbury aren't sticking the bloody football on. WHAT A HORROR SHOW. Complete and utter salad.

Quite confident of getting out of the group. Should we do so I expect us to reach the quarters. There's a winnable second round tie whoever it is should we progress.

In before "further than Wales" but you won't get out of that group unless Roy has a complete change of heart and takes the reigns off.

I'll have a serious bet of £10 that we do Finners, payment made via PayPal.

Playing well and not getting out of the group would be ok by me. Imagine if we'd has this group 4 years ago; we'd have been crucified.

It can't be any shitter than 2010. Four games and not a single good performance. Slovenia was the only non-embarrassment of the lot and even then we fell over the line against a very, very mediocre débutante.

We were a lot better at the Euros.

England, have no chance of making it past the group stages. Just get a feeling that Roy Hodgson, will set us up negatively and think we shall get thrashed by Uruguay and Italy. I want us to do well but, Hodgson doesn't make me feel convinced that he can lead England to the last 16.

I've gone for us scraping through the group. Wish I had a friends optimism (he's had a bet on 9 points from the group) but should we get through I see another quarter final defeat.

Having said this I would not be suprised if we fall at the first hurdle.

There is optimism and there's.....

Italy will win the group. We will come 2nd.

Quarter final loss to a very good team.

I couldn't really give a shi* if we go out but really have a go at who we come up against. What I don't wanna see is us being negative and going out to a sloppy 1-0 somewhere. We've got exciting players. Just go for it.

Scrape through the group and out in the second round. And that would be a decent achievement.

How would that be a decent achievement when scraping through the group is probably a harder achievement than beating one of Ivory Coast, Columbia, Greece or Japan, if we lost to one of them then I would be embarrassed.

Your statement is a total contradiction. The bit in bold suggests that getting out of the group is more difficult than beating the teams you list, but then you say "how would that be a decent achievement?"  meaning thats the least you expect. So make your mind up lol Either that or youre suggesting getting out of the group would be a great achievement, and that shows how low on quality we are, and how low expectations are which is where i am right now.

Getting out of the group would be a decent achievement for the fact that for one we have a squad that is largely inexperienced in major tournaments, or just plain not very good in some areas anyway, and we are in a tough group.

Youd be embarrased to lose to Ivory Coast, Colombia Greece or Japan? I dont know if you actually bother watching other international teams, but with the possible exception of Greece who had a fairly routine qualifying group and needed a playoff, the teams you list are bloody good. Do you live in some sort of time warp? Im not suggesting for one moment im anti England but i think everyone realises this world cup could be a difficult experience and yet listening to you its like were the next incarnation of Brazil 70.

Can people please do at least little bit or research before posting in here, Brazil isn't in the middle of the Sahara desert.

A few pointers

  • Uruguay is not a hot country on the whole, it's climate is similar to that of Spain or Italy,
  • Costa Rica is warm at best, however tempretures rarely get into the 30's
  • We play Uruguay in Sao Paulo, South Brazil, the average tempreture is about 20 degrees, it's frequently colder than that. Colder than England can be in August or May when the Premier League is played
  • We play Costa Rica in Belo Horizonte, South Brazil, see above.
  • Costa Rica is not in South America

Also I don't get a semi final prediction. We're down to meet either Brazil or Spain in the quarters if you think we can beat one of them surely you must fancy us not to bomb out in the next round?
