Ric Flair Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Dont think we will get out of the group stages. Dont feel confident at all. I like Roy but dont think he will achieve anything at this level, and to be honest it's not really his fault, I mean WHO do/can you pick? I just hope im proved wrong and this young team can do the business. Our defence is weak and I cant really see us scoring a lot at all. I will most certainly blame Roy if he picks a negative team containing 4 central midfielders and only one forward.Sterling, Lallana, Barkley, Ox and Sturridge can all destroy teams and that's not even mentioning Rooney who must finally show up at a World Cup at some point and Gerrard whose had his most influential season in almost half a decade. We have some exciting talent there, that's lacking experience but England have proven over the years that these inexperienced players are the ones who play without anxiety and fear that grips our team.
The Doctor Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 While Columbia are good, you'd likely play them as runners up, which would be in Rio - the climate there is not one similar to Colombia - in Manus, you'd be ****ed, but in Rio? it's as far from Columbia as Boldumsaz (small city on the Turkmenistan/Uzebekistan border) is from London - the conditions would favour you far more than them. Edit: having said that, if you make it through it'd likely be as runners-up (Uraguay are a strong side), and if so you'd face a run of something like Colombia/Spain/Argentina to make the final. You've no hope of winning the tournament if you don't win the group. Even if you did, Ivory Coast/Brazil/Germany is not particularly appealing either.
Fox92 Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 I've just listened to Three Lions and subsequently would like to change my vote from 'Group Stages' to 'Winners'... I did the same thing! Goosebumps on Three Lions 98 when the commentator says "Gareth Southgate, the whole of England is with you".
Legend_in_blue Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Our chances of qualifying from the group have just increased somewhat - Suarez could be out.

There's seldom an easy route through the knockout stages, but when you look at a tough group and then the likes of Brazil/Spain/Argentina etc it is daunting. That said, to even get through the group would increase confidence and i'm not overly fearful of any nation right now purely because we rarely play big teams so i've nothing to compare it to. Hahahaaa
Corky Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 I think we'll do ok. The defence doesn't look strong so we're going to have to go for it, the first match will be cagey but afterwards we should play as open a game as we can. Through as runners up, second round victory and a quarter-final defeat. Something to build on. Maybe not.
foxfanazer Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 Not trying to be negative but I think we'll really struggle to get out of the group. It is a tough group and defensively I think we're really weak. Need to beat Italy and then we'll have a good chance I never predict anything right
MooseBreath Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 Pretty confident of Italy beating Costa Rica. 50/50 on the beating Uruguay. In spite of ourselves we still have a half decent chance of going though. We'll beat anyone in the 2nd round and fluke a quarter final win before going out in the semis to Germany on penalties. Mark my words.
Finnegan Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 In before "further than Wales" but you won't get out of that group unless Roy has a complete change of heart and takes the reigns off. I'll have a serious bet of £10 that we do Finners, payment made via PayPal. Donation to Foxes Talk? You're welcome, Mark.
Manwell Pablo Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 You're welcome, Mark. As much as I agree with you, it's far from over.
Dan Posted 20 June 2014 Posted 20 June 2014 We could play well and not get out of the group. No-one should under-estimate Costa Rica OOH. AAH.
Guest Col city fan Posted 20 June 2014 Posted 20 June 2014 I see us running in to trouble in the quarter finals but if we've got that far then we'll have performed fairly well so perhaps we could finally ' over-achieve ' in a major tournament and beat one of the big guns in Spain/Brazil/Holland who we're likely to face in the QF if we get there. I think we'll beat Italy, it's all set up for us to do so in my dubious logic. June 14th is an absolute humdinger of a day of football with 4 games being shown and the whole country in party mode. I can picture us winning and the whole nation going fcukin wild, like they did when we beat Argentina in 2002. What a day that was, although it was early in the day and then the party carried on throughout that day and well in to sunday. This one will be bedlam. Everyone will be absolutely steaming and sun burnt and won't have a clue what the score is/was but will come to the next day to find we've beat the Italians and crack open another warm Skol. Uruguay are a tough team but as I said, we'll beat Italy and then they won't look as fearsome, I think it'll be a score draw and then we'll beat Costa Rica 2-0 and advance to the last 16. We actually have what looks on paper a fairly comfortable selection of opponents in either Greece, Japan or Ivory Coast. I'd fancy us to beat all 3 but obviously Ivory Coast have some serious talent and could cause us problems if we revert to type. However, I think they'll win their group and we'll get Japan and we'll bull hammer them. The media will start bum sniffing from this point, they'll have interviews with Bobby Charlton and Geoff Hurst on what they think it takes for us to go all the way. It's likely we'll get the Spanish, who i'd much rather face than the Brazilians as they're on home soil and that defence of theirs looks unbelievable. I struggle to see us beating either but you just never know. It's a game against teams like that that i'm buzzing to see what Sterling, Barkley, Lallana and Sturridge could do against. All 4 strike me as fearless, yet to be riddled with the anxieties that come from playing regularly for England. Whatever happens I cannot wait for this, especially when you have the safety net of Leicester being promoted in the bag already! Anything else this summer is a bonus.
Mike Oxlong Posted 20 June 2014 Posted 20 June 2014 Italy will beat Costa Rica today and then rest a shedload of players against Uruguay who will get at least a point from that game to ensure goodbye Copacabana and hello Heathrow for Woys boys by the middle of next week.
David Guiza Posted 20 June 2014 Posted 20 June 2014 Italy will beat Costa Rica today and then rest a shedload of players against Uruguay who will get at least a point from that game to ensure goodbye Copacabana and hello Heathrow for Woys boys by the middle of next week. My thoughts exactly. If Italy had something to play for in the last game then maybe not, but a point would send Uruguay through (providing we win) and Italy top the group. I'd like to think they wont see it like that, but i'd imagine that will be the case. The Italians do love a conspiracy
ScouseFox Posted 20 June 2014 Posted 20 June 2014 If Italy lose vs Uruguay and we lose vs costa rica they're relying on gd to go through, let alone top the group. They'd be taking a risk to take the piss in their last game, especially if part of their plan is relying on us atm
MooseBreath Posted 20 June 2014 Posted 20 June 2014 Also Uruguay can't risk playing for a draw in case Costa Rica beat us, so they'll have to go for it. Problems might arise if we storm into an early lead because then Italy and Uruguay will know they only need a draw. Things need to remain uncertain in our game for long enough so that the other two keep playing to win.
ScouseFox Posted 20 June 2014 Posted 20 June 2014 yeah. if it was 3 one off games i'd make us favourites to qualify. italy should comfortably beat costa rica, denting their gd. we beat them by a couple too, definitely above them on gd, and again if it was just a one off match with no "they might rest these, only need a draw, they'll set up defensively" etc you'd say italy will beat uruguay, in which case we'd finish above them too. just can't see it happening seen as they'll probably only need to draw the final game to suit both of them down to the ground.
Guest MattP Posted 20 June 2014 Posted 20 June 2014 How is that ridiculous? Columbia are not better than us at football, simple as that. England are a better side than them, its people like you who fail to see the potential and the class we have in our own players.. If you honestly think players like Armero, Zapata, Guarin, Aguilar, Sanchez, Gutierez and Martinez are better than Baines, Cahill, Gerrard, Lallana, Sterling, Barkley, Rooney and Sturridge then you need to take your head out of the clouds. England failing to beat them in a last 16 tie in a World Cup is an embarrassing thought. Columbia would embarrass England? On what ridiculous basis have you imagined that? You and your mates played against them on FIFA online? The ridiculous FIFA world rankings listed them higher? Absurd. Oh my lord.

I was thinking this earlier, we could be in a terrible position where we need to win by a couple but also need to keep it tight until late to give the other game something to think about.
