Dan Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 How would that be a decent achievement when scraping through the group is probably a harder achievement than beating one of Ivory Coast, Columbia, Greece or Japan, if we lost to one of them then I would be embarrassed. You'd be embarrassed if we lost to Colombia? I don't think they're any worse than Uruguay.
RonnieTodger Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 I just hope it's better than 2010 and 2012. They were two embarrassing tournaments for different reasons. This squad has a fresh feel to it, but I can see us going out with 4 points.
Grandad. Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 If we can get out of a group against Italy and Uruguay then go onto lose against one of them then I would be very pissed off, they aren't great football teams and to suggest they are better than us and it wouldn't be bad is ridiculous. Greece, Columbia, Ivory Coast and certainly Japan are in noway any better than us and we should be very confident in beating any of them, Yaya Toure or no Yaya bloody Toure.

Manwell Pablo Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 where did you find that? Evil Kagawa twitter feed.
Freeman's Wharfer Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 I've just listened to Three Lions and subsequently would like to change my vote from 'Group Stages' to 'Winners'...
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 England, have no chance of making it past the group stages. Just get a feeling that Roy Hodgson, will set us up negatively and think we shall get thrashed by Uruguay and Italy. I want us to do well but, Hodgson doesn't make me feel convinced that he can lead England to the last 16. Seems to be the standard reply for a few but under Roy we're a disciplined unit and a difficult side to beat, if nothing else. There's little to suggest we're actually going to get ragged all over the shop, and, as has been said elsewhere - Uruguay and Italy will be just as cautious of us as we are of them. I think we'll manage four points from the group, Christ knows if that'll be enough.

Colombia are my dark horses mate, even without a fit and firing Falcao. Embarassed Belgium not long back and finished behind only Argentina in the qualification for the South American countries with the tightest defence. They managed to dick a strong Uruguay 4-0 amongst that, too. They're hardly mugs even if they aren't one of the traditional international big boys.
Stadt Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 Which nations have a really hot climate? Argentina, Chile?

m00nie Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 win the group beat greece in knockout lose to spain in quaters spain to go on and lose to germany in the final

Frankly its ridiculous to suggest Colombia are NOT better than us, at least currently. How is that ridiculous? Columbia are not better than us at football, simple as that. England are a better side than them, its people like you who fail to see the potential and the class we have in our own players.. If you honestly think players like Armero, Zapata, Guarin, Aguilar, Sanchez, Gutierez and Martinez are better than Baines, Cahill, Gerrard, Lallana, Sterling, Barkley, Rooney and Sturridge then you need to take your head out of the clouds. England failing to beat them in a last 16 tie in a World Cup is an embarrassing thought. If anything, Colombia would embarrass us . Columbia would embarrass England? On what ridiculous basis have you imagined that? You and your mates played against them on FIFA online? The ridiculous FIFA world rankings listed them higher? Absurd.

Fwiw I have said above that I can see us losing to Colombia in the last 16 but actually come to think of it they're exactly the sort of "up-and-comers" or mid-tier nation we seem to punch our weight against in major competitions. I also agree that people are very happy to denigrate our players whilst bigging up those from countries/leagues they probably don't have the first idea about. We've got an ok and potentially exciting squad. I think it would be very disappointing to lose to a side like Colombia but "embarrassing"? Not by a long shot. And to suggest so certainly isn't "absurd".
Dan Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Crikey. It's England v Italy all over again. Colombia seriously are not a bad side. How ridiculous to list "players like" and then forget most of their top players. Colombia, in a South American World Cup? We would struggle against that. Absolutely no doubt.
Zapp Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Columbia have a very strong 1st 11. Fully fit falcao is better than anything we have (I accept he is injured and unlikely to play) Jackson Martinez would get in any prem side. As with what seems to be all South American sides bar brazil & arg their defence is a bit iffy and their attack has many quality players. England player for player would probably win 8-3 and would not fear Columbia, but Roy would need to get the tactics right, because they have clinical players, good work rate and a bit of pace, flair & trickery to boot.

If James Rodriguez, Falcao and Jackson Martinez started up top against our backline at the moment, yes...I think they'd turn us over.

I didn't name James Rodriguez, that's it, how can I list Falcao when I doubt he will even go to the World Cup? There's a basis to the Italy argument, but Colombia? Have a day off. Too many people read into world rankings on here and if anyone tells me they have watched many Colombia games in the past 12-18 months then they're a liar. I certainly don't fear them, I don't even think Colombia are certainties to get out of their group.
Alexikokopops Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Can people please do at least little bit or research before posting in here, Brazil isn't in the middle of the Sahara desert. A few pointers Uruguay is not a hot country on the whole, it's climate is similar to that of Spain or Italy, Costa Rica is warm at best, however tempretures rarely get into the 30's We play Uruguay in Sao Paulo, South Brazil, the average tempreture is about 20 degrees, it's frequently colder than that. Colder than England can be in August or May when the Premier League is played We play Costa Rica in Belo Horizonte, South Brazil, see above. Costa Rica is not in South America Also I don't get a semi final prediction. We're down to meet either Brazil or Spain in the quarters if you think we can beat one of them surely you must fancy us not to bomb out in the next round? But they're in the same continent. They all have the same climate. Just like we have the same climate as Russia and Spain.
Manwell Pablo Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 I've got to say if we knock our Uruguay or Italy a Falcaoless Columbia is a game we should be looking to win. To describe losing to them as embarrassing would be going a bit far though.

If you can progress through a group with Italy and Uruguay in there and then you fall to Colombia, Japan, Ivory Coast or Greece then to me that is embarrassing, I set high standards though.
SeCrEt FoX Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Dont think we will get out of the group stages. Dont feel confident at all. I like Roy but dont think he will achieve anything at this level, and to be honest it's not really his fault, I mean WHO do/can you pick? I just hope im proved wrong and this young team can do the business. Our defence is weak and I cant really see us scoring a lot at all.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Italy are just as wank as us, Uruguay will narrowly beat us and we'll beat Costa Rica by a couple of goals.. Expect us to get through! A win v Italy and I think we'll take 7 points from the group.
Grandad. Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 You just following me around the forum? The top line and the second line are two totally different scenarios.
