chicagofox Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Too old, too slow, past it etc. A signing from the Micky Adams collection? Get Miquel by all means, but not Upson for crying out loud, are we premier league now or not? This is a signing that a lower level championship club would make. I would be disappointed if we were still in the championship and were being linked with him let alone the premier league. So you would be ok with us signing a centre-back who played less than 10 games in the Championship last season and most match days was not deemed good enough to make even the bench. But you are totally opposed to us signing a centre-back who was a first team regular and I believe player of the season for a club who finished in the top six.

Absolutely, Miquel is one for the future and will improve. Upson is not good enough, period.
Bettsj2 Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Hmmm. Upson has played the majority of his career at the top level and has England pedigree. Can understand the reluctance due to age but definitely cant question the quality. People keep mentioning pace, but very few centre halves have pace in their locker. You could probably name a few but for every one that you name that does, you can probably name 30 that dont. Taggart and Elliott were amongst the slowest i've seen but as a pairing I was always comfortable with them.

Given a lot of your antics in match threads and elsewhere I really don't think you being disappointed is something to worry people. It's not an exciting signing but Pearson does know what he's doing. He's had signing after signing written off and he hardly ever gets it wrong.

Too many FM and Fifa experts on this forum using there game management to make their valued commentary. The constant negativity by some, on any player (not yet even confirmed) conected to us is really annoying to most fair minded fans who have faith in the management who runs the club including player signings. But these Keyboard hero's who know so much about team management from playing games expect they should be listened to is really sad. If we do sign Matthew Upson I think it will be well thought out and a good signing for the team. The role he plays will be determined by the Manager. What this signing, if it happens means for other potential signings, plenty of time to see. Boys, grow up. You are entitled to your opinion, but frankly choosing your judgement for those that are professional people involved day to day in reL club management and these decisions could determine their jobs, I think I will back the professionals, than a Boy on a keyboard demanding his opinion counts. Just saying Tuna!

Do you not think that had Brighton been promoted through the play-offs that Upson still would've have been there next season? And therefore a Premier League player. So far the signing of Hamer and potentially Albrighton and Upson is reminiscent of the way O'Neil operated in the Premier League transfer market.

Very good point. 3 English free agents not on high wages is a good start to the addition of the team. Yes, not the most sexy of signings but solid players who can contribute. I am sure we have more significant signings to some and as I have said in another post, I would expect them post the WC.
Rocky Dennis Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 MARTIN KEOWN!! he had lots of pedigree, a damn sight more than Upson, that turned out well for us!!!
teblin Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 MARTIN KEOWN!! he had lots of pedigree, a damn sight more than Upson, that turned out well for us!!! I take your Martin Keown and Raise you Les Ferdinand. Think Keown was about 37/38 when he signed rather than 35.
Babylon Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 MARTIN KEOWN!! he had lots of pedigree, a damn sight more than Upson, that turned out well for us!!! So because one person didn't work out, that means another person completely unrelated won't also.

Please sign Miquel, young and promising rather than this has bean.

Fair points Paul, personally I didn't rate Upson in his 20's never mind 30's, I can only remember him being poor in an England shirt, he was slow and clumsy back then also! I'm usually very happy to think Nige knows what he's doing but this potential signing doesn't sit right with me at all, particularly if we don't sign Miquel or a similar younger player!

Brilliant, lets sign a player who has barely played for us because he's young. Lets not sign the player of the year for Brighton who was the leader of the tightest defence in the league because he's old. Upson started 44 games last season, only one less than Morgan. He's not some crock on his last legs.

I know what you mean. I am surprised by this one myself. I hope there is a younger centre back coming in as well.
Nick Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Upson will be good for us. People need to stop crying themselves into an underwhelmed pool of pace.
Rocky Dennis Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 So because one person didn't work out, that means another person completely unrelated won't also. Didn't say that , read it again!
Bettsj2 Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Didn't say that , read it again! Just read it again but cant see what other point you're making with that statement that would relate to Upson. Lay it out.
Babylon Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Didn't say that , read it again! I have, if you weren't trying to make that point why are you even bringing him up, what has Keown got to do with Upson.
LCFC31 Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 I have, if you weren't trying to make that point why are you even bringing him up, what has Keown got to do with Upson. I think he's trying to say if Keown can do well, why can't Upson? Badly written though.
Jordan Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Upson was supposed to be too slow when he was linked with City before last season. I think he's a very clever player, but I wonder if he'd be more useful, say, teaching someone like Liam Moore a few tricks rather than taking his spot in the pecking order.
MC Prussian Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 I was a bit disappointed upon hearing about Upson being a potential transfer target. Although he was brilliant for Brighton this past season, I think his pace has pretty much gone. He's also prone to the odd injury here and there. Then again, he's got tons of Premier League experience and could be what Kevin Phillips was to us in the Championship - a leader and figurehead who can teach the younger players a trick or two about life in the top tier. If he manages to put one full season together one last time (he's 35 now) in a Leicester shirt, then so be it.

His game has always been about positioning, aerial dominance and safety first defending. Wouldnt expect him to start in a flat 4, but as part of a 3, he could be excellent.
KFS Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Will be officially announced this morningBig reservations on this one. Thanks for the info Qwerty, anything else?
