sdb Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Morgan, upson, Wasyl and Moore. Not sure we'll have 5 centre backs. Little bit worried about that but an opportunity for Moore to establish himself i'm more concerned about a massive lack in pace
LCFC31 Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 i'm more concerned about a massive lack in pace Don't you think De Laet and Schlupp could make up for that?
sdb Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Don't you think De Laet and Schlupp could make up for that? not if they're half way up the field and our CB's are exposed, no
ramadaone Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 So, Matt Upson is signing then. I wouldn't be so sure but that is only my opinion and has not come from a reliable source Everything was set up today as the Beardies signing showed so something not quite right for me Might be a trivial thing that is resolved tomorrow for all I know so don't shoot me down in flames if it is

LCFC31 Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Is starting to get strange. Nothing on Twitter, nothing by the club... Got a feeling it may happen tomorrow.
Agent Fox Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Why do people think Moore can't make the step up? He wasn't dropped due to form last season...
Narborough_fox Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 I wouldn't be worried for a lack of pace as long as Moore is playing. He's no slouch, as shown by him being able to play at RB with no issue. Think if we do sign Upson, which is looking likely now, it may well be on a similar sort of deal as Phillips. Upson may well realise that he's getting close to the end of his career and may be looking at one last shot at the Premier League whilst also preparing for the future with coaching badges etc. He played 43 games for Brighton last year and got their player of the season award, so fitness and quality isn't particularly a worry for me. Will be able to play a bit of football as well with him having worked under Poyet (loan) and Garcia at Brighton. Bradders, the Brighton fan on here, said that minus the stupid challenge in the play-off semi-final he was their best player and he'll watched him all year. Finally, he's played 293 times in the Premier League as well as getting 21 caps for England (playing at the South Africa World Cup) so he'll bring bags of experience that we seriously lack in the defensive department with none of our current CB's having even played in the Premier League at all.
Babylon Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Morgan, upson, Wasyl and Moore. Not sure we'll have 5 centre backs. Little bit worried about that but an opportunity for Moore to establish himself 3 keepers 5cb 2 lb 2 rb 5 cm 5 st 3 wingers 25 players, but under 21's don't count so Moore as a CB above would give us another place for perhaps 4 wingers. Schlupp I think just missed out by a few days for the u21 rule. I don't think anyone else counts for u21.
pazzerfox Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Upson would be a good signing in my opinion. He has played at the very top level and has proven Premier League experience. Yes he may be getting on a bit and slightly slow, but he will know the game inside out in order to not let his lack of pace get exploited. Just think of the knowledge he can pass on to Moore and others too. Phillips, GTF, Hammond were the experience needed to get us to the Prem, Upson could be just what we need to help keep us there.
Babylon Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 How come under 21s don't count? Are you sureBecause it's in the rules.
lcfcsnow Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 He is in no way better than Wasyl, Morgan or Moore. Premiership experience is one thing but he's dropped down to the Championship for a reason and is at no age to make the step back up. Rather concerning as our early deals are reminding me of the last time we got promoted. Hamer = Coyne Upson = Howey Albrighton? = Gillespie

Hamer = Coyne Younger and played at a higher level - edit: Coyne played at Grimsby in Champo so not true, but Hamer is 4 years younger at time of signing. Upson = Howey Played in a world cup + more England caps Albrighton? = Gillespie A lot younger, resale value Don't get the comparison...
Fez of Mahrez Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 I've never seen the rule? Yeah but look how you spell the song in your signature.
lcfcsnow Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Don't get the comparison... Hamer is basically an improved backup keeper, as Coyne was. Upson and Howey both played for England, but both nowhere near good enough standard for the Premier league at their age of signing. Albrighton's career has stagnated and suffered injury problems in recent years, young but a similar situation.

Hindsight is obviously a wonderful thing, but taking in to consideration the squads at the time, all 3 players are an improvement on those you've mentioned. I'd rather Hamer who has had a few years as Charlton no. 1, Upson who has experience in the Prem (and joint top-scorer for England at a World Cup...) and experience of winning honours (with Arse + promotion with Brum), and Albrighton who has played the majority of his career in the Prem (not to mention Villa don't want him gone) than the 3 we signed back then. Unless Albrighton has a massive gambling habit of course...

Meant European leagues only finished on Saturday and player may well be away.
Tuna Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Too old, too slow, past it etc. A signing from the Micky Adams collection? Get Miquel by all means, but not Upson for crying out loud, are we premier league now or not? This is a signing that a lower level championship club would make. I would be disappointed if we were still in the championship and were being linked with him let alone the premier league.

Bet you said the same thing when we signed Hammond & Taylor-Fletcher last season.
Tuna Posted 22 May 2014 Posted 22 May 2014 Bet you said the same thing when we signed Hammond & Taylor-Fletcher last season. True about GTF, yes but I've always rated Hammond. But signing Upson would be a mistake.
