Captain... Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Good shout. Damien Delaney too. I struggle to imagine Upson is a poorer defender than either of those two. This signing's growing on me more and more. Paddy McCarthy is still in Palace's 25 man squad...
Mjeb Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Good signing , cover for defence with experience ,great in the air a beat us twice last season . Not sure on his pace ,but experience helps when you can read the game - Pearson knows bit about defending Bring it on
Guest Sharpe's Fox Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 If his name was Mathias Upsonsteiger people would be drooling. He was among the best CB's in the league last season, he's knows the league and he can be trusted at set pieces. Yes he is 35 but it is a one year deal!
deep blue Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Good in the air , as we suffered on crosses some times last season , not sure how quick he is . But was in team that beat us twice last season , and was brightons player of the season . He can read the game very well , experience will be vital . We are in the premier up the city I cannot wait Agree with this. In previous threads, many posters have been concerned about our defending at corners. Surely upson is the ideal person to help us address this, and when he plays he should increase our attacking threat when we win corners.
BHAFC Braders Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 If you guys had gone up, would he have kept his place in the starting 11? or would you have looked to replace him? Would've kept him , whilst like it's been mentioned he's not massively quick - the leadership he shows is second to none (Lewis Dunk improved under him I felt) , fantastic heading ability and what he lacks in pace he makes up for in positioning.
Filbert's Friend Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Is there any chance he's coming as a Kevin Phillips style potential coaching deal? Or is he not quite old enough for that yet?
Out Foxed Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 if he can improve our set piece defense then it's a positive. he has the turning speed of a bus though.
WhispyWizard Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Would've kept him , whilst like it's been mentioned he's not massively quick - the leadership he shows is second to none (Lewis Dunk improved under him I felt) , fantastic heading ability and what he lacks in pace he makes up for in positioning. Cheers for that, sounds like he still has a quality football brain, i wouldn't be too surprised if he starts with Morgan tbh.
Bryn Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 I have to say I would probably say on balance, he is a better player than Wasyl who has been excellent. Still hoping we snap up a classy centreback though.
act smiley Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Well at least it's not Roger Johnson. I've not seen Roger Johnson play in years, has he really gone off the boil that badly? As to Upson, not a signing to be over the moon about, but an experienced, been there and done it, squad player? Can't argue with that really.
Finnaldo Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Would've kept him , whilst like it's been mentioned he's not massively quick - the leadership he shows is second to none (Lewis Dunk improved under him I felt) , fantastic heading ability and what he lacks in pace he makes up for in positioning. Exactly. He's not a bad player and more than adequate back-up, and that's exactly what he'll be. We have Was, Wes and Moore so he'll likely be on the fringes if we have an injury or need to change. We've been woeful at heading all year so how you can dismiss a player who is aerially competent is beyond me.
WhispyWizard Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 I have to say I would probably say on balance, he is a better player than Wasyl who has been excellent. Still hoping we snap up a classy centreback though. Rather have a classy LB at the moment.
JJS84 Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Rather have a classy LB at the moment. the left back that finished the season for us might be about to go to the world cup, surely that's pretty classy, no?
David Lowe Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Great news! Excellent signing - think the doubters will be proven wrong.
cuddly ken Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Albrighton, Upton, this is the dross we are bringing in. I've heard a few other players we are in for none top level either.
whitlock Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 The last player to score for England at a World Cup. Pointless fact
lcfcsnow Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 A bit of experience helped us get promoted but the core of the team was young, fast and enthusiastic. I can't for the life of me understand this signing when we already have two slow center backs in Morgan and Wasyl. Even if he's going three at the back you need different options at RCB CB and LCB, not just three meatheads. Please don't give us a summer reminiscent of Micky Adams 2003 Premier league preparation, what a disaster.

That is still going to remain the same I would be concerned if we had a lot of oldies like we were last time in the prem but that isn't going to happen.
cjslcfc Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Anyone who thinks age is a problem: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Gabbidon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damien_Delaney Anyone recognise these two? I mean, going by their age and their past career surely these two were "found out" in the Premier League last season. Oh no, wait. They were part of the 7th best defence in the Premier League last season. Come on. Upson is a good player and will provide much needed cover and experience for the SQUAD. It's not like he's been signed on a free for us to base our defence around. He's been signed as a competitive squad player, which he certainly is. If ever there's a sign of a good signing it's how gutted the fans of the team he's just left are. Brighton seem pretty annoyed. Also, just because we are signing frees at the moment doesn't mean that's our transfer policy. Teams are only just able to talk to out of contract players now. If we don't get them now they will go elsewhere soon enough, they are free agents after all! It's not like the Championship when you can loan a player in to cover injuries etc... Your squad of 25 is the squad you get. Upson will be an important experienced head in that squad. Well done Nige and co...
KFS Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Albrighton, Upton, this is the dross we are bringing in. I've heard a few other players we are in for none top level either. Christ, it's back.
Corky Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Albrighton, Upton, this is the dross we are bringing in. I've heard a few other players we are in for none top level either. I'm sorry, do we need top level players? Are we expecting to win the league next season?

We need 25 solid players over the age of 21. Chill the fvck out.
Dan Posted 23 May 2014 Posted 23 May 2014 Albrighton, Upton, this is the dross we are bringing in. I've heard a few other players we are in for none top level either. Given your track record I can stick you firmly alongside Tuna.
