FOXES-BROWNBOY Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Do you think a good cup run (in either of the cups) will be a good thing or just hinder our performances in the league ?
sylofox Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 If we are struggling the distraction of the cup can help. We have the chance to play squad players that are not getting league games. Long as we are not getting suspensions and injuries should be a good thing. Extra income to.
Agent Fox Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Pearson has already said the league will take priority. A cup run would obviously be swell though.
sylofox Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Pearson has already said the league will take priority. A cup run would obviously be swell though. He also said we would not have heard of many of his transfer targets.
Dan Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Cup runs hindering league form is one of the biggest myths in football and it's sad that people actually believe it - it's self defeating nonsense. Sunderland turned shit after they'd been knocked out of the League Cup. I'd love to see us go for one, preferably the FA Cup - pounce on the amount of clubs who refuse to take it seriously and add what is without a doubt the biggest gap to our history.
Stadt Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Yep it is a myth. How does an extra 6/7 games (if you're lucky) that your reserves play affect your season? As Dan says neglecting it is more likely to have some sort of affect. It's not as if it helped Villa storm up the league.
Dan Posted 29 May 2014 Posted 29 May 2014 To be fair that's a poor example as playing your reserves is exactly the kind of mentality that leads to teams going out early - if you put your reserves out and win then you're no better than a side like Villa/Newcastle (who pretty much 'opt out'), you just happened to win despite not taking it seriously. Sadly the FA Cup's always going to be neglected - that's the price you pay for the ever growing Premier League/'Champions' League.
David Lowe Posted 29 May 2014 Posted 29 May 2014 On the Football Forum at the end of the season Pearson made it clear that he would not be taking the cup competitions seriously.
Fox92 Posted 29 May 2014 Posted 29 May 2014 Nige has already said survival is priority, but why would cup runs hinder teams? I'd soon replicate what Hull did rather than a team like Villa.
teblin Posted 29 May 2014 Posted 29 May 2014 On the Football Forum at the end of the season Pearson made it clear that he would not be taking the cup competitions seriously. No he didn't. He said the league was Priority. Didn't say he wouldn't take the cup seriously.
Richard Posted 29 May 2014 Posted 29 May 2014 Would anyone take an FA Cup win if it meant we were relegated?
AyewJoking Posted 29 May 2014 Posted 29 May 2014 Its not the fans or even the manager that contribute to a cup run, the players must want it and im sure they'll take premier league wages survival over a medal, let alone a quarter final.
ousefox Posted 29 May 2014 Posted 29 May 2014 It's the Europa League that seems to mess teams up. Hard for a team the size of Swansea, Hull, Wigan etc to adjust to playing those games alongside league games.
LCFC Rennie Posted 29 May 2014 Posted 29 May 2014 Imagine if we got to the final, back in Europe. We'd take loads all over Europe.
Silverdaz Posted 29 May 2014 Posted 29 May 2014 No dont want a cup run next season, League is our priority (sad to say)
Dan Posted 29 May 2014 Posted 29 May 2014 Would anyone take an FA Cup win if it meant we were relegated? Yes I would. The fact we've never won it is absolutely criminal. You look at the list of football league clubs who have never won it and we're easily up there with the biggest. To be in 4 finals and have never actually won it is unreal. Whilst I'd be disappointed with relegation, it wouldn't be a disaster. If we were properly managed in the Championship both financially and tactically then we would be in a great position to go back up. The only chance of it crippling us financially is if we spend beyond our means this summer. Winning the FA Cup is a far bigger achievement than staying in the Premier League. The only way it isn't is if you're considering money, but I'm not a club accountant, I'm a fan. I can respect why Pearson would prioritise the league but the neglecting of the FA Cup by the majority of big sides has killed the competition and the buzz of it is dying off for me completely - but we NEED to add this to our trophy cabinet one day. Being in the league cup quarter final didn't do us any harm did it? Here's one for you all then - who do you think enjoyed the 2013/14 season more, Wigan fans or West Brom fans?
Brooksy Posted 29 May 2014 Posted 29 May 2014 Would anyone take an FA Cup win if it meant we were relegated? Definitely
Voll Blau Posted 29 May 2014 Posted 29 May 2014 Would anyone take an FA Cup win if it meant we were relegated? No brainer. Football is played to win trophies.
Silverdaz Posted 29 May 2014 Posted 29 May 2014 No brainer. Football is played to win trophies. Ask Wigan I bet you they would of preferred to stay in the Premier League
Dan Posted 29 May 2014 Posted 29 May 2014 Ask Wigan I bet you they would of preferred to stay in the Premier League Can people seriously not see how that is killing the game? They've stayed in the Premier League doing **** all for years. Wigan Athletic winning the FA Cup is remarkable. If they'd have taken another year in the top flight over winning the trophy then shame on them.
