It is good seeing a Leicester player at world cup but saying he was quality is pretty laughable. If he played for forest you would all say he was hardly noticeable and average. Thats what is boring. God this is annoying. You sound like those irritating, poor Brazilians who protest about lack of money. Jesus, give it a rest and enjoy the tournament.

Algeriafan Posted 18 June 2014 Posted 18 June 2014 Riyad Mahrez was average, but it's not his fault. I personally don't know what was going through the managers head. You can't play that defensive, in that heat, and expect anything. Belgium were always going to tire us down. We gave Belgium too much respect and I'd argue Belgium did the same. Notice their substitutions never opened the game up in that they still kept 3 cms on the pitch and one striker. Normally teams would put an extra striker or attacking midfielder when behind but Wilmots didn't and I think that decision won his team the game. If they did open up slightly, maybe the extra space would have given us a chance on the counter. Unfortunately we didn't get to see our attacking players in this match, including Mahrez. Our strikers' (Soudani) hold up play was shocking, and I'd say Mahrez was probably the next worse player. Again, he doesn't deserve all the blame because it was mainly the tactics that ensured we wouldn't see the best of him, but if you compare to Feghouli on the RW (who I assure you was also nowhere near his best), you realise that Mahrez didn't keep the ball well enough and his decision making was poor. He did get in behind the Belgium defence in the first half and elected to shoot instead of squaring it into the box, which was a really poor decision. Some of his passes were poor too. We needed him to be at his best because our threat was always going to be down the left. Yes Feghouli's much better than him, but our RB is poor, while our LB is a very good player who's good going forward, and we just needed to see Mahrez hold the ball up better and wait for the overlap more (notice it was from our LB's cross that we won the penalty). Hopefully we'll see a more attacking Algeria in the next 2 games. South Korea and Russia are there for the taking, and hopefully we will see the best of Mahrez. I'd expect us to switch to a 4-2-3-1, Brahimi will come in as our playmaker and he'll link up very well with Feghouli and whoever plays LW. Will Mahrez keep his place? I wouldn't be surprised if we see him dropped for the next game for Djabou, mainly because Djabou will be physically in better shape (I'm sure all that defending in the heat took its toll on the players). If Mahrez is dropped, it won't be because of his performance but it will be simply based on keeping players fresh. We have decent depth in our squad especially in attacking areas (i.e. Djabou isn't that much worse than Mahrez, Soudani/Ghilas/Slimani are all decent strikers) and I feel we'll need to use that to our advantage if we want to progress.

That none of the front 3 did so until a fair bit into the 2nd half says you're spot on: It's not emblematic of a problem with the players but with the manager who clearly told them not to.Still, this is one of the best teams in the World right now, so nobody's going to judge a player on that one match given it's not like we saw him regularly messing up, just struggling to get involved against the best defence from European Qualifying (iirc).

If they weren't going to play attacking in any sense they might as well have just taken 23 defensive-minded players and scrapped all attackers and left them home. I'd really hope that the Algeria coach sees that Russia and South Korea can be there for the taking. Gotta give the front-men a chance to shine and I really hope that Mahrez's first World Cup isn't a disappointment (not entirely his fault) not just for himself but for the nation & fans too.
