Nigel Pearson - Top 5 LCFC Games

Recommended Posts

To celebrate Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson signing a new three-year deal at King Power Stadium, LCFC.com remembers some of his most memorable matches so far.

There have been plenty to choose from in Pearson’s two spells at the City helm, with two title-winning campaigns as well as two top-six finishes, but we’ve managed to narrow it down to just five of our favourites.
We also want to know what YOUR favourite matches are with Nigel Pearson as manager, so remember to tweet us using #PearsonLCFC and follow us by clicking here.
Leicester City 4-1 Derby County
Championship
Friday 10 January, 2014
Goals: De Laet 25, Nugent 48, 60 pen, Vardy 64; De Laet og 59

Voted as the Performance of the Year at the Club’s End of Season Awards, City’s demolition of Derby County at King Power Stadium last season was one that will live long in the memory for Foxes supporters.
With both sides pushing for promotion to the Premier League, and Derby coming into the match not long after a run of eight wins and a draw from nine games under new boss Steve McClaren, it was billed as a very close encounter.
However Pearson’s Foxes blew their opponents away with a dazzling display of football that sent them seven points clear at the top and left many declaring them as the ‘champions elect’ on the back of such an outstanding performance.
They started well when Ritchie De Laet had gave them a half-time lead with a great finish after a neat one-two with David Nugent, but the best was still to come after the break.
Just three minutes into the second half Nugent added to the tally following some good work from Jamie Vardy, before Jake Buxton’s header gave the visitors hope at 2-1 on the hour mark.
That hope lasted for about a minute, as Vardy won a penalty for Nugent to convert for his 16th of the season, and then added a fourth himself with a confident finish under the goalkeeper shortly afterwards.
Nottingham Forest 2-3 Leicester City
Championship
Saturday 4 May, 2013
Goals: Cox 3, Ward 50; James 24, King 43, Knockaert 90

While the 2012/13 season ultimately ended in disappointment in the play-offs, City’s final day clash with Nottingham Forest was surely one of the most dramatic and exhilarating games in recent memory for the Blue Army.
After a promising start to the campaign, City’s form dropped off and left them in a three-way battle for the final play-off place with local rivals Nottingham Forest and a resurgent Bolton Wanderers.
The Foxes needed to win the match and hope that Bolton dropped points at home to Blackpool if they were to have any chance of progressing, but things started badly for the Foxes when Simon Cox put Forest ahead inside three minutes.
Pearson’s men had an uphill battle, but they showed they were up for the fight as goals from Matty James and Andy King edged them into a 2-1 lead just before the break.
But in the second half, Elliott Ward headed Forest level, meaning that with Bolton being held 2-2 by Blackpool, the side who found the next goal would be heading towards the play-offs for a shot at the Premier League.
Then in stoppage, City hit Forest ruthlessly on the break when Jeff Schlupp found Anthony Knockaert, who played a perfect one-two with Chris Wood and lashed the ball home from six yards for a famous victory.
Queens Park Rangers 0-1 Leicester City
Championship
Saturday 21 December, 2013
Goal: Vardy 41

Without a defeat at Loftus Road all season and with a squad boasting an array of players with Premier League experience, a trip to face promotion-chasing Queens Park Rangers was always going to be a tricky prospect for the Foxes.
Add to that a run of three defeats and a draw for City, with many pundits billing The R’s as strong favourites for a match where a win would have hauled them even further clear of Leicester in the automatic promotion spots with Burnley.
But on the afternoon itself, Pearson’s team showed just what they were made of with a strong, resilient display of undoubted quality. It was a match that many members of the squad and management staff have subsequently billed as a ‘defining moment’ in the season, and one where promotion became a real possibility.
QPR’s defence was a notoriously tough nut to crack in 2013/14, but the appearance of a squirrel was perhaps a sign for the Foxes as they broke through that back line to score one of the goals of the season through Jamie Vardy.
The striker was razor sharp to latch onto a David Nugent flick-on, but it was his touch and finish that was the real moment of quality, as he handed the Foxes a brilliant victory against the favourites for the title.
It was also a game that heralded the start of that memorable Club record run of nine consecutive wins, and one that made the rest of the league sit up and take notice.
Leicester City 1-0 Leeds United
League 1
Monday 13 April, 2009
Goal: Howard 90

After enduring the pain of relegation to the third tier for the first time in the previous campaign, the 2008/09 season and the arrival of Nigel Pearson are certainly one of the turning points in the Club’s recent history.
The weight of expectation to return to the Championship at the first attempt was huge, but the Foxes thrived under the guidance of Pearson and enjoyed a blistering start to a season that saw them lead the table most of the way.
In hot pursuit of the Foxes that season were Peterborough United and MK Dons, and after a run of just three wins in 12 games, they were breathing down City’s neck until a brilliant come-from-behind 3-1 win at Hereford.
That set up a King Power Stadium clash with a tough Leeds United side in mid-April, who were unbeaten in 11 games and looking to make safe a play-off place. For City though, a win would all but guarantee promotion back to the Championship, and Pearson’s men threw the kitchen sink at their opponents over the 90 minutes.
Frustratingly though, the Leeds defence held firm in the face of a bombardment from the dominant Foxes, who were desperate to claim the three points that would take them a giant step closer to the Championship.
The winning goal finally arrived in the 90th minute, and it was big striker Steve Howard who was the hero. His bullet header from Max Gradel’s corner flew past the goalkeeper and had the Blue Army in raptures on another memorable afternoon under Pearson.
Leicester City 3-0 Nottingham Forest
Championship
Saturday 27 February, 2010
Goals: Berner 68, Gallagher 79, King 81
forest-2-2853670280-1677930.jpg
A defeat against local rivals is never an easy one to swallow, so when the Foxes suffered a 5-1 loss away to East Midlands side and fellow promotion chasers Nottingham Forest in the 2009/10 season, it set up a fierce return game at King Power Stadium.
Forest were hot on the heels on leaders Newcastle in the automatic promotion places going into the game, while the Foxes were also harbouring ambitions of a top two finish themselves, just three places behind the Reds.
A sell out crowd of nearly 32,000 fans provided the backdrop to one of the most crucial matches of the season. Defeat, for either side, would deal a blow to their promotion hopes, with a host of teams clamouring for points at a crucial stage of the season.
Despite having only come up from League 1 the previous season, City had done a great job in the Championship until that point and did an equally impressive job of restricting a Forest side to few clear-cut chances in a first half that they controlled.
But with revenge clearly on the agenda, City burst into life in a second half that saw them blow their opponents away, as well as banishing memories of that 5-1 defeat with three goals in 14 minutes.
Bruno Berner opened the scoring with an emphatic finish and Paul Gallagher doubled it soon after with a sumptuous free kick, before Andy King put the icing on the cake with a third goal 10 minutes from time.

Good selection, but would they make up your top 5?

I imagine the Number 1 spot will be pretty unanimous. I'd be tempted to put Norwich Away in the Cup in there.

Can't argue with them to be fair. Watford away last season is up there for me too

Bloody difficult to narrow it down to 5! Also thought of Burnley Away this season, Southampton Away in 11/12, Cardiff Away in the Play-Offs (if we could leave out the penalties), Preston Away in 09/10 when we sealed the PO spot..

Yeah it's really tough. Fulham in the cup was a great game too

Yeah I agree with QPR in 2009, that was a great away game, one of my favourites. Still think Cheltenham away is up there as well, we just dominated that day and really highlighted how strong we could be in League One.

Yeovil home and THAT schmeichel moment. Was sat behind the goal going mental. That game will never be forgotten

Don't think that was a best Pearson result though...

The thread doesnt ask for best pearson result it is showing top 5 most memorable matches. That doesnt mean they all have to be outstanding victories.

One of the worst games yeah

Granted it wasnt a brilliant game but being so close to that moment makes it one that will always be remembered in my mind.

The other games were brilliant results/performances but i didnt see them games in person. Hence why i mentioned the Yeovil game because i was actually at that game which is why it would be in my top 5 favourites.

It was only memorable for a last minute equaliser.

I agree Schmeichel rising like a salmon was a great moment and will always be remembered but the rest of the game was woeful.

The thread title is "Nigel Pearson - Top 5 lcfc games"

This wasn't one of them.

Derby game at home was brilliant definitely the best of the season. Winning at QPR I think was the turning point where the team started to realise they could be champions and we seemed to have all the momentum after that.

Pretty hard to argue with those 5.

Nottm Forest (both of them) definitely stand out. Truly great moments for the club as well as for Nige.

Did you stop at the title??? If you read the first post it does ask what OUR favourite games were and ive explained why that game was one of MY favourites.

burnley away this season would make mine. think i'd replace qpr away with it.

Agree with Burnley, that was a massive result.

Burnley (a) for the result and the best away trip I've been on was Norwich (a) in the FA Cup. Howard's header vs Leeds was a quality moment as well.

Posted

Barnsley away last season was the best away performance I have ever seen from a Leicester team. Could have been 10. Never seen us so dominant in a game away from home.

Posted

For me

Forest 2-3 Leicester

Leicester 3-0 Forest

Leicester 4-1 Derby

QPR 0-1 Leicester

Burnley 0-2 Leicester

Just because I was at these games and they were incredible, top atmospheres and quality football
