The managers can't be arsed with it, the players aren't up for it and not even the fans can get passionate about it.

Yes its the World Cup 3rd place play off match.

In light of Van Gaal's comments, I think its time to scrap it. 3rd place only counts for anything in the Olympics.

Can't see many advantages in having it. The only teams that give a shit about it are the ones that are unlikely to get as far as the semis again, i.e., Croatia in 1998.

Yep, I think so. Its a total waste of time really. I never understood why it is played in the first place apart from the obvious ranking points (which doesn't work and is old fashioned anyway..I mean England, 10th??)

But at the end of the day its all about the money isn't it, and FIFA love themselves a bit of that!

It must be humilating being the third and fourth best team at something major.

It's like Forest v County at the City Ground to see who is third best in the East Midlands.

At least the winner gets a medal.

It could still be motivation enough and a call for some extra pride for a smaller nation making it to 3rd, though.

There isn't much of a purpose to it generally speaking, must have been some history behind it's creation.

In this case though there is a genuine purpose to it. If Brazil have anything about them, they should be grateful at such an early opportunity for a slice of redemption. Admittedly nothing they could possibly do would even come close to redeeming that shambles from the other night but as professional players, they should WANT the opportunity to put right one or two wrongs from the other night.

I've voted yes though because I think it's treated more as a glorified friendly rather than a competitive match nowadays. I mean who really remembers 3rd?

This is the thing isn't it? I thought Uruguay were 3rd in 2010 until today!

I would have loved the 3rd place play off it was Argentia vs Brazil but to me now it just seems a waste of time given Van Gaals comments.

You really think Fifa would scrap it though given how much they would make from tickets, advertising etc?

Can't see why fans would want rid of it. It's always full of goals, without it we wouldn't have Nelinho's classic against Italy in the memory bank. It's always been a part of the world cup, there's no reason to scrap it. If you're not bothered, don't watch it. Just have another rest day with no football if that's what you prefer (no idea why you would).

Van Gaal's clearly an absolute dick, couldn't care less what the flat faced freak thinks about it. Just because he's Man Utd's next manager he's automatically some sort of all knowing god. Fvck him. That was the most negative semi final performance I've ever seen so he can suck it up like a man. He should be grateful his shit side has a chance to finish third in a world cup.

Never watched this game in the past and won't bother tomorrow. Pointless friendly when all the players just want to go home.

Yet they manage to produce at least 3 goals for every one in living memory, which is more than I can say for the majority of the knockout games.

That doesn't really have any relevance whatsoever. Surely the fact the knockout games are tighter proves the point that they are more meaningful and teams don't want to concede in such an important game.

Games are a lot more likely to be open when there's nothing riding on it.

3rd v 4th at the 2002 World Cup.. South Korea v Turkey, it should of been scrapped after that.

Like people have said its a non-event, the sides don't want it and even the fans aren't fully interested in the game either. FIFA won't part with it though as it is big traditional part of the World Cup. Would be good if there was some form of incentive from the game so it is competitive.

I've voted not to get rid just because it means more footy on the tv :P

Only the host have automatic qualification.

Doesnt the previous winner (current holder) get automatic qualification anymore?

Oh and get rid of the 3rd place playoff, just a money spinner and an embarrassment for all concerned.

Spain still had to qualify for this WC

Get rid no one gives a toss who came third or fourth

Nah, I imagine it's massive for some of the smaller nations. Teams like Sweden, Turkey, South Korea having the chance to finish 3rd in the World Cup.
