separator Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 Its very mixed. Some of his ideas are absurd like closing all ticket offices on the underground and making buses cashless, not exactly tourist friendly. Think Mayor of London shouldn't be allowed to double job as an MP, its an important enough job in itself. I think its a good idea, give it a few years and the tube will be cashless as well. Overseas visitors can buy a visitors oystercard before they arrive in the country & contactless payment goes live in september on the tube so you won't even need a ticket or Oyster then. Some ticket offices barely sell a couple of tickets an hour. Why pay a ticket office clerk £35k a year when they can be used elsewhere. I think Boris has done a good job personally.
Nalis Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 Job the Hat and Separator I don't agree that its overly user friendly to get an Oyster card. As you guys point out you have to order in advanced. What if people just fancy coming down to London for the day at short notice. Anyway, its takes away from the point that if London is to remain the Number 1 city for tourism in the world (Boris' words not mine) then you shouldnt have to buy an Oyster card in advance. One thing to resolve this would be to permit the purchase of Oyster cards at top up machines but I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere. Also, if you lose an Oystercard you have to reregister this at a ticket office which is baffling considering the proposals. Lastly, contactless payment on buses isn't ideal for everyone. Do they work for foreign cards? If so, is there the usual foreign transaction costs associated?? I'm not necessarily anti Boris but you cant dispute the above...

I know it's more expensive, but won't traditional travelcards still work?
Jon the Hat Posted 6 August 2014 Author Posted 6 August 2014 £35k to work in a ticket office London commuters have been held to ransom for years.
Webbo Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 When I was in Rome you could buy a 3 day/7 day/single ticket from a machine on their underground. It's not rocket science.
midland_red Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 I live in london and the guy is absolutely useless. The good things which have happenned on his watch are sll ideas which started under ken livingstone. If he were sn mp it would be good....then we could have a mayor who isnt just after his own poltical career

Certain ticket machines at each station have been able to dispense new Oyster cards for a number of years, the large ticket machines are currently being upgraded to dispense them too. Your right about foreign cards though, a number of them won't work with the contactless system (I think US banks but I might be wrong there).
Voll Blau Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 Would be great if he didn't get selected anywhere. Fed up of politicians of all colours being parachuted into constituencies they know fvck all about prior to their election.
Strokes Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 Great, I love Boris. Hopefully he can get rid of Cameron.

DennisNedry Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 It's more difficult to give an opinion on how good a government was unless you experienced it personally. That's not to say if you had you would think any differently but it certainly would give you more perspective. So I assume you make no assumptions about Nazi Germany because you weren't born until after it was over?
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 Tory / UKIP coalition... PM Johnson and Deputy Farage.... think I'd move to Tibet. I would be more than happy with this situation. Hope you enjoy Tibet.
Vacamion Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 Thirty nine posts in and I can't believe that no one has mentioned that Boris is a top shagger. Not only that, he gets away with it time and time again, usually by buffooning around, quoting Cicero or falling off something. If he were to become PM, I would only be happy if he filled the cabinet with straight males and ugly celibate women over 55 - with a difficult job to do and his finger over the button for Trident, it's always best that he keeps his mind on the task in hand...
PAPA LAZAROU Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 He acts like a buffoon to hide his very right wing views and unfortunately people seem to lap it up. No doubt he's a clever bloke but I'd hate it if he became PM. Unlike miliband who is a buffoon and doesn't attempt to hide his left wing views and will never be PM. I would actually laugh if he became Pm.
Tielemans63 Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 Unlike miliband who is a buffoon and doesn't attempt to hide his left wing views and will never be PM. I would actually laugh if he became Pm. None of us will be laughing if Ed Miliband becomes PM.
BoneDog Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 Those are both great ideas. It is so easy to buy an Oyster card almost anywhere. I think that edging towards a cashless society is only a great idea for the gangsters who run the banks and the governments that they control. But I suppose we'll find out soon enough once the Dollar goes down. I'd rather have cash I can see and stash than some blummin' microchip in my wrist that can be manipulated by the scumbags. The hacking possibilities don't bare thinking about. Edit : don't know why that posted before I'd finished typing the first sentence!
Buce Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 None of us will be laughing if Ed Miliband becomes PM. I will, just because it will piss off all the tories on here so much.

Electronic banking has been around for years now, contactless payment is just the next generation. Having cash doesn't protect you from the gangsters, there's plenty of fake money in circulation.
sdb Posted 6 August 2014 Posted 6 August 2014 Amazing how being a thick moron can make you so popular. Yes he's intelligent in certain ways (who isn't?), but he's also a complete clown lacking vast amounts of common sense. Absolute embarrassment.
