Our Role as Fans

I'm convinced too that fans' positivity or negativity has a huge bearing on proceedings. If Palace had fans like Villa, for example, then no matter how good Pulis was last season, they would've gone down.

It's the same reason that almost no-one is tipping them for relegation. They've signed Fraizer Campbell and Brede Hangeland (both relegated last season) and pundits are falling over themselves to predict a top 10 finish for them. I'm sorry but Pulis isn't that good.

I hope that some of the negativity last season (and prior seasons) was born out of a false sense of entitlement that we somehow deserved to be in the Premiership and therefore every time we drew at home or lost we were underperforming and therefore it warranted criticism.

Now we're at "our level" those fans may be a little more forgiving about being beaten or simply being outplayed and as such be less likely to moan. What do you think?

I think if we play in the manner we played last season and show 100% commitment there's a decent chance the atmosphere around the ground will be more positive, regardless of results and regardless of the fact our fans can sometimes be a bunch of nobs.

Judging by when we were last in the top division I think people will be pleasantly surprised at  the support and  how vocal it is when we are underdogs for virtually every game

Agreed. As long as we see the proper level of effort on the pitch I think we'll see a more forgiving side to our support this season.

IMO its the fans that will play a hand in whether we go down or stay up. If your going to be a moaner and a groaner when we go behind then come the end of the season if we do go down, you have to take some responsibility for that. Some might not agree with this opinion, but this is a football forum and ill speak whatever i feel. Fed up of fickle fans, probably the same ones who have moaned endlessly about the red away kit. Rant over

I certainly agree that it can make a difference.  When we were relegated under Holloway (by the narrowest of margins, let's not forget) the atmosphere at the then Walkers was poisonous for a big chunk of the season, so if that had any detrimental effect on player performances it could have made the difference between us going down and staying up.

I've said it a million times I know, but obviously there's nothing wrong with being unhappy with how things are going - it's how any dissatisfaction gets expressed that people need to think about.  In most places of work, unless I'm much mistaken, employees aren't motivated by people shouting at them how shit they are (except possibly the army).  If the team is struggling they're surely going to respond more to encouragement than criticism, and of course, encouraging better performances does not equate to endorsing poor ones, as many on here seem to think.

People just need to enjoy going to football matches more. Have a sing-song with your mates, it's fun.

As has been said there's too much expectation to be entertained now, which is a ridiculous attitude. Anyone with any knowledge of sport will know it doesn't always go in your favour and what's happening on the pitch is certainly not always entertaining.

exactly, players aren't made of stone and it will definitely affect their confidence, which is a massive part of players  form

I might be old school, but i've never been to a footy match with the expectation of being "Entertained"(and i've been through the Pleat years!)I see one match as part of a season,Ups..Downs and how we finish after this season ends is pretty much like the end of a film.Never go to a football match expecting to be entertained, but when you look back at the season as a whole you will be!

Let's get the KP rocking on Saturday, we have to make this ground a place to be feared for opposing sides. The fans could be the difference between survival and relegation.

after waiting 10 years to see top flight football again. I for one shall enjoy the ride.

I think people have reason to be optimistic. this squad is the best/ has most potential out of the sides we have taken up. kasper, moore, dd, james, knocky, mahrez, vardy.

could all grow and flourish in the top flight.

ok so they may not. but would you want to see pearson gone, the team, that was crowned champions, so we know they are good enough to come back again leave and our blue print for a bright future ripped up.

I hope not, be what may, this club is going in the right direction for the 1st time in a while.

so lets back the boys, we may just surprise a few.

Good piece, Captain. Great points raised an in full agreement with you. For many of these players it will be their first time they'll be playing regular football in the Premier League. A whole new experience for them and it's our duty as fans to be right behind them and give them our support in the process.

Cherish the good times with them this season, be there for the team through the bad times, of which there inevitably will be just because that's the nature of the game.

Villa fans are a retarded bunch anyway. Moaned when MON got them top 6.

I think villa fans have the most deluded expectations in the country. Really hope they get relegated this year and finally take their rightful place alongside their peers Forest and Leeds.

Just look at Stoke. There a below average team yet get results because of the fans backing n I dont just mean in the last few minutes at say 2-2. We need to all pull together from the first whistle to the last n get behind the team as a whole. N yes we're going to get hammered a few times but when your say 4-0 down in the 1st half, dont disappear downstairs or go home stay n sing your hearts out n show the club that the fans are behind them all the way through thick and thin. That to me is what supporting your club is about.

Ok, so let's have a couple of renditions of delilah followed by silence and we'll be fine.

This season is different to last. We had such quality and confidence that overcoming most of the Championship could be achieved against a backdrop of almost muteness. Now, we are up against it, most sides will have extra quality so encouragement is the way to go.

Yep.

Does anyone think our fan base as a whole is ready to unite in what are going to be very demanding and challenging circumstances this season? I fear not.

I fear not to. N lets b honest almost all of the away teams will sell out n b very vocal n theirs nothing worse than hearing that for 90mins. #foxesInVoice

Nothing worse than being reduced to wolf whistles when you're being out sung. I hate that!

Difficult one to call.

We already have a few moaners, and the price increases this year are unlikely to help. To be fair, it's difficult not for people to raise their expectations of entertainment when you're charging them nearly as much as a West End theatre ticket to go through the turnstile.

Having said that, I think our status as underdogs might help. We can be good at getting behind the team when things aren't going well - it's just that, more often than not, not enough people bother when it's Barnsley or Doncaster we're struggling against. Hopefully that might change this year.

Won away, drew at home, won away - 7 points from 9 - and our team got booed off at half time at home to Birmingham last season. I hope those fans have developed a little more patience. Not holding my breath though...
