Foxes1 Posted 7 September 2014 Posted 7 September 2014 We can still hold our own in the Premier League. Interesting statistics Di Maria cost 3 times as much as our whole squad did, but there is no reason as to why we should be scared of any game in this league. And if we hadn't had bought Ulloa we would have been bottom of the spending league.
Xen Posted 7 September 2014 Posted 7 September 2014 We can still hold our own in the Premier League. Interesting statistics Di Maria cost 3 times as much as our whole squad did, but there is no reason as to why we should be scared of any game in this league. And if we hadn't had bought Ulloa we would have been bottom of the spending league. Every team in that list - apart from the 3 promoted clubs - received over £60m last year just for being in the PL. So as you'd expect, Leicester and Burnley are clearly adrift at the bottom. And then there's QPR, who finished lowest of the 3 (having spent the most) last year, again assembling a squad more than triple the valuation of ours. Will be very interesting to see how far that strategy gets them this year, given their very close brush with failure in the championship. Where do they even get all their money from? (and how the hell do they get away with FFP?!)
Devonfox1884 Posted 7 September 2014 Posted 7 September 2014 You look at us and Burnley, bottom 2, you look at burnley's squad and you would say they are certain to go downn, you look at us having spent £8m more (basically the Ulloa fee) and you can tell straight away that we have a better squad. Dyche can moan all he likes about the lack of money, but when he had money to spend, when compared to Pearson, he has spent it dreadfully. Vardy cost £1m, George Boyd has cost them £3m, who is the better striker? Riyad cost us 400k, Kightly cost them £1.5m, who is the better winger. Truth be told, Pearson could have Burnley stay up if he was their manager, and he chose their signings along with his staff. So glad we have him as our manager.
Jace Posted 7 September 2014 Posted 7 September 2014 Just shows what an unbelievable job Pearson has done, considering few years back we had the most overpaid squad in the Championship. Lets hope he spends more now and brings some even better quality in.
zak_lcfc Posted 7 September 2014 Posted 7 September 2014 Pearson has done wonders, Brings in players that fit the system he wants to play for small sums but are quality or have the potential to be great players somewhere along the line! Swansea shown a few seasons ago that you don't have to spend loads the first season back in Premier League to do well!
Deucalion Posted 7 September 2014 Posted 7 September 2014 We may have only spent £18 million to assemble that squad, but what is it's current value and what is it's potential value if we stay up? Purely guesswork valuation of some of our important players. Kasper - 5 million Moore - 4 million Drinkwater - 4 million Mahrez - 3 million Vardy - 4 million That's over 18 million.
Guest ttfn Posted 7 September 2014 Posted 7 September 2014 In the current market Moore and Mahrez are already worth significantly more than 4 and 3 million respectively. I'm sure we'd not sell either for less than 10 million.
Corky Posted 7 September 2014 Posted 7 September 2014 According to Geoff Peters, who will probably know his stuff, Pearson hasn't spent over a million on a signing since returned in November 2011 until this summer, when the revenue generated meant more was available to spend. The days of Leicester being big spending (where we could blow everyone else away) in the Championship happened in the summer under Sven, where we could be accused of "buying the league". Not any more, Pearson's been sensible and careful with his dealings.
Kitchandro Posted 7 September 2014 Posted 7 September 2014 FFP just doesn't work. QPR have the smallest ground, how can they be half way up the spending table?

That's a very good point, actually. It would be interesting to see how the 'cost to assemble' numbers compare to the 'value of squad' or 'sale price' numbers, for each of the teams. That would be purely subjective though... Using transfermarkt valuations, we get: Interesting to see, especially the positions for the promoted clubs, but its to be expected. After all, ourselves and Burnley bought from the Championship and created PL players, whereas QPR bought in PL players at PL prices. It will be more interesting to see how the table looks come December (just before the window), when the transfermarkt valuations for the promoted clubs have had a chance to change to reflect how each player performs in the PL. If I remember or someone cares to remind me, I've got the file saved so can easily make changes.

I agree that they're worth more than we paid, but I think your valuations are on the small side. I couldn't see the club selling those players at those prices currently. I think Moore and Drinkwater, as young English players, would fetch a lot more than that. Especially seeing as they have just signed new contracts and are valued highly by the club. I think Mahrez and Vardy would only be sold for a much larger fee, also. I do agree with your general point, though. NP may not have spent a lot on the squad, but its current price is much higher, and potentially even more so.

To offer a little balance we bought 'better' players for less money as we had more money in the first place. Our sports science and scouting department require a considerable cash outlay, I suspect Burnley couldn't afford that level of investment when in the Championship so their scouting has been restricted almost exclusively to the UK. The players you highlight were also bought by us in the Championship so are likely to be cheaper as our coffers hadn't been swelled by Premier League money which has distorted all subsequent fees.

Zapp Posted 7 September 2014 Posted 7 September 2014 If Moore has a fantastic season then he will be worth 15-20m. Considering quality CBs are golddust atm. Plus he'll be Young, English & proven in the prem He could possibly fetch more than that

jamesmilner Posted 7 September 2014 Posted 7 September 2014 I cant see the prem positions being different to the top 6 spenders, different order but the same teams . you get what you pay for in this world , unfortunately .
johnny the fox Posted 7 September 2014 Posted 7 September 2014 Same old fookin big spending Leicester, trying to buy the league again..disgusting club.

To be fair, your comments are very fair and valid mate. I hadn't thought of the PL/championship divide like that. But my stance is the same, I believe Pearson could improve Burnley more than Dyche's has if he was given the £6/7m that Burnley have spent this summer, even without our 'fancy' scouting network.
Jordan Posted 7 September 2014 Posted 7 September 2014 I know individual contract details are often kept private, but I would also be curious to see each team's total squad payroll (or wage bill, if you will).
Corky Posted 7 September 2014 Posted 7 September 2014 What about Chris Wood? Geoff reckons it will reach a million with add-ons from promotion.
MooseBreath Posted 7 September 2014 Posted 7 September 2014 FFP just doesn't work. QPR have the smallest ground, how can they be half way up the spending table?Parachute payments mostly, also an easy £5m input from their wealthy owner. Also quite possible that they will have failed last year and will have to pay a fine. The sanctions aren't strong enough though. Assuming they did fail FFP last season they'll easily be able to afford the fine now they're back in the prem. Had they stayed down they would have got a transfer embargo but they obviously weren't too concerned about that. It was supposed to stop clubs gambling on promotion but here we have a club who has done exactly that in the first season it was introduced. Big fail.
