Good post.

The margins at Tesco are also greater because that's what shareholders have been used to in the past, and the board's ultimate goal is to protect Earnings per Share to keep its major shareholders happy. Lidl/Aldi do not have those pressures as they are privately owned companies.

The fact Tesco still has an open defined benefit pension plan for staff just highlights that it is still living in the past century.

I can't see things changing for Tesco. These big corporates find it difficult to change, especially when their goal is to protect earnings per share.

Nobody dare to do anything drastic, or would be allowed. It will wa decade of dithering.

M&S is the same. Great good isle, but their clothing is living in an era from 50 years ago, appealing to the over 70 beige brigade. Several people have come in, but just tweaked it rather than change it totally.

Woolworths was another, our history is littered with corporate failures where they dare not change drastically.

If old man Tesco was about, as an entrepreneur he would be able to do it, but these corporates just are not able too.

Expect one to go, I would expect Morrisons go within 5 years, and Tesco will continue to dither as people change to the operators that can adapt quickly.

Aldi and Lidl are cheap because they have smaller shops, less staff, a smaller range, they don't open 24 hours and they don't deliver. It's virtually the same model Kwik Save used to have, they faded away because they seen as down market, maybe that will happen to these discounters too eventually.

If people want to shop there that's their choice, you pays your money you takes your choice. Aldi and Lidl are in it for the money just as much as Tesco, s and I doubt there's much in their respective margins.

Tesco mistakenly thought they could keep expanding at the same rate almost infinitely. There are only so many shoppers in the country and there had to be a point where the country became saturated with large stores.

Google 'Tesco Chatteris' to seen what's happening now they've had their dawning realisation.

You realise that the uk market is a drop in the ocean for these guys. I don't think you can compare them to kwik save. These guys are here to stay.

As an example, lidl have 590 stores in the uk and 3,300 in Germany, 1,500 in France and has over 10,000 in total. That's makes the uk 6% of their stores. Aldi has nearly 10,000 in total and just over 500 in the uk. I don't believe kwik save had any stores outside the uk.

They're a company based in England who generally treat staff well and pay tax. Much worse companies than Tesco about.

Woah there......are we talking the same Tesco's that has c50 subsidiary companies based in low-tax countries such as the Cayman Islands and is notorious over many years for not paying anything like the levels of tax that it's UK profits would merit.

Also is this the same Tesco's notorious for its unequal treatment of disabled workers and agency staff as reported by numerous reputable news outlets over the years.

Of course the last post could of been ironic and if so I consider myself well and truely Whooshed.....

Tesco food is defo one of the worst supermarkets , the quality is shite, most of the meat is imported, cheap cheap cheap, I like home grown food, keep it British,,

Co op

M+S

Sainsburys

I much prefer Tesco to Sainsburys. Do most of our food shopping stuff at Lidl though.

In a small town like Bedford, there are 2 huge Tesco's within 5 minutes of each other

There are at least 6 or 7 Tescos (incl. Metro, Express). Ridiculous. One has even been boycotted by local residents because it put a store in place of a pub which had been there for years and was part of the community. Local residents signed petitions and tried to stop it as much as possible but Tesco obviously did enough overpower them.

I assume these same people were the same people not using the pub leading to it being closed?

All the big supermarkets force prices down.

The margins on groceries are always small, they make their money through volume.

Tescos is a British company paying it's taxes that employs thousands in this country. This isn't good news for Britain.

Yes but why are they going abroad for most of there meat?? Not good for the British farmers

Support your local supermarket and bloody stand up when doing so.

Ohhh Morrisons we love you.

I think co op, is the most British supermarket you can get, a bit dear but you don't mind paying for better quality

Lidl's meat (fresh meat not processed like ham, sausages bacon etc) is all british, if you are passionate about buying british.

They also do free range chicken

The last time I bought a loaf of bread at the coop, which I thought was freshly baked as it was still warm turned out to be frozen in the middle.

The pub was always in use. It wasn't struggling in terms of customers. I presume that Tesco decided to put a store there because they can afford it and didn't really consider what they were taking over. There's a massive Sainsbury's just down the road so customers aren't even forced to go to that Tesco

They take over pubs because they don't need to change the planning use and they're the right size usually with parking. They can afford to buy out even successfully run pubs

Posted

I never liked Tesco, the food is awful and the staff are like zombies. I like Sainsbury's because it is convenient and the food is decent quality.

If you want to support British workers, then buying more local produce would be a better and healthier option.

there in lies the problem tho.

we can all look at a pub and think it's busy and they must be doing ok. but there is so little profit in a pint, once you pay tax and overheads especially if your tied to a brewery.

why would you slog your guts off when tesco offer a nice pension pot.

For years, been battering the manufacturers prices down. They have been the bullies of the grocery trade and always ensured business was on their terms.

Not nice to deal with, and always had it their own way.

Now going horribly wrong. The Germans have invaded. They work on lower overheads, give quality products and don't take as much margin and the consumer has realised and are moving from Tesco to the likes of Aldi and Lidl.

I like these situations. The underdog coming through, beating the bullies and I can't see a way back for Tesco. Finally they have got what they deserve. Taken years, but finally they are sweating.

Hate to break it to you, but all major supermarkets do that.....

I recently went into the village Co-Op to buy some milk (£1.40 compared to £1 in Tesco).  They had a petition to protest against Tesco taking over The Huntsman pub in Cosby.

I live less than 100 yards from the proposed store & it is totally the wrong setting for a Tesco Express.  I don't agree with the location despite me shopping at Tescos most of the time anyway & that it would be ridiculously convenient.  It's a shit pub full of scrotes, but still preferable to a Tesco Express.

Of course the Co-Op would be against some direct (& much cheaper) competition.  The petition argued that the Tesco store would not be in keeping with the village's appearance.  It is a conservation area, but as DavieG has said, there are no real obstacles in the planning.

I don't know exactly what has happened, but Tesco have pulled out & the Co-Op are taking over The Huntsman pub & relocating their store.

Wankers.  Where's your petition now?
