Riyad Mahrez was signed from Le Havre in the last January window

Nigel Pearson said he will not be making wholesale changes to his Leicester City squad during the January transfer window.

After a good opening to the season, City have started to struggle and have picked up just one point in their last six games.

Although the City boss said they need to find more quality, he said he was not looking to completely reshape his squad in January.

City are in the relegation zone and face a fight for Premier League survival, but Pearson is confident the players he already has at his disposal are up for the fight.

“The January window is a difficult window to operate in,” said Pearson.

“It is normally a window in which you bring in players not necessarily for the short-term, but it becomes a need for change.

“When you are building a side you tend to do the business in the summer.

“The January window becomes one of inflated prices because people understand there is the need for change which affects market forces.

“At this moment, I am not sure what money or funds would be available so I am not saying we won’t do business, but I don’t think we need wholesale changes.

“It is always nice to add quality to a squad but, likewise, you can’t totally change a squad in the season.

“I have a lot of belief in the players I have got at the moment, but it is getting that balance right.

“We will do business if it is right for us and if we are able to do it.

“If we can’t, then we will continue to work like we always do, that is to prepare the players physically and mentally and continue to give them the knowledge that our belief in them as staff is there.

“Of course it is about results. It has never been about anything else. While you are not getting positive results there will be negativity. We have to break that cycle.”

Pearson said he retains a belief in his players that they can arrest the recent run of four consecutive defeats without scoring a single goal.

When asked if he feels he has enough quality in his squad, he said: “Results at the moment would suggest ‘no’ but I think we have some very capable players. It is not happening at the moment, but that is where we are at and we will continue to work in the way we always do, which is getting the preparation right and making sure the performances are as good as they can be.

Hopefully he won't be around in January - if he is, we may be in such a bad position that no decent players will touch us. That just leaves journeymen and championship to go at - and non-league of course.

Of course he'd have the cash if he's still in charge - he just can't see further than his own arrogance and self-belief in players he bought and/or can't motivate.

Well If he is telling the truth he has no idea if he has a budget in Jan.

So did he spend it all in the summer?

If that is the case so much for the millions to make us top 5.

Saying the right things. A bit more quality required but we do not need a complete overhaul of this squad. I'd look to get two, maybe three in in January.

Posted

He's correct, we need to utilise the current squad in a fashion that will bring better performances out of them. I think he will adapt after this recent run.

Posted

He's right. We only need a couple of additions.

The squad we currently have had us in the top half fairly comfortably for the first half a dozen or so games.

Get the formation and tactics sorted for our current team and we'll be OK.

He's just playing it coy.

The Jan window is notoriously difficult for getting players in for reasonable sums, hence why Pearson hasn't stated that he has a massive amount of money to spend as that would alert other clubs and drive up player prices.

our squad has the players to stay up but our "best xi" according to nigel wont. so he's right we don't need additions we just need to use the quality players we already have effectively.

lol he moans about the quality his players are producing, and then says he has faith in them, which one is it, is the current squad good enough mr Pearson, make up your mind.

If he wants to continue with his system of the last 6 games, he needs to buy players to suit, instead of trying to put square pegs in round holes.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Back to my point he says he does not know if money is available.

He must know what he had left over from the summer or did he spend it all on Ulloa.

He did not have to state what he has to spend but to make out like there is nothing is a joke.

Everyone will know we have money and if this form continues will know we are desperate.

This is my take on the present situation.

We achieved promotion with near record points, I genuinely believe the Management thought we had enough quality in the squad to stay in the Prem  (and that may still be the case), with view to buy and improve next summer. Consequently there were only a few additions bought in relatively cheaply to strengthen the squad and to buy a 'quality' striker Ulloa. It is now becoming apparent however that the difference in quality from the championship is probably greater than they thought.

The owners have been extremely patient, and now in the promise land will not be looking to leave it in a hurry, NP will therefore be on borrowed time, you can see another three or four losses and it will be bye bye.

He's hardly going to come out and say "yes, we need loads of new faces because this lot aren't good enough" because that would shatter morale amongst the players completely. It's a bit of a non-story but understandably papers have got column inches to fill.

He hasn't made out like there is no money to spend, the quote is "I am not sure what money or funds would be available".

That's exactly what I would expect him to say even though I'm sure he knows what money is available from the owners.

Why not.

With some of his comments over the last few weeks.

It don't seem like he cares about what we think or the players.

Don't think something's he's already said will cheer them up, but he needs to get to January first, with this form we will be more or less set for relegation.

If this is the case, he won't probaly be here, and if he is, the club won't spend much as they will be preparing for ffp in the championship, and budget for that.

I just hope we get some positive results soon, for the good of all involved.

I love Nigel and I've never said anything against him in either spell he's been here.

But the summer transfer was difficult to operate in because we are held to ransom for being a Premier League club. So now the January window is difficult too? Shall we just not operate again?

So why not just say no comment I don't talk finance thats not my job.

Instead he tries to be clever.

I'd like some premier ship quality loans in - with options to buy if we stay up/

Ben Davies from Tottenham at left-back? Another neglected centre-mid at centre mid.

We just need a bit more experience & creativity. We definitely need a new left-back, we can't remain with Konchesky until the end of the season. See how the midfield go through the Christmas period, if Drinkwater doesn't improve bench him, sell Hammond & try and buy someone better. While we definitely need at least two strikers, maybe someone who can play in a number of positions across the frontline, would love someone like Clint Dempsey on loan.

Agreed, he could've said that but people still would've jumped on that comment too no doubt.

Or even I know but for obvious reasons I can't say.

Surely people would understand that.

But to make out he don't know when he should be working out the Who's seems a little daft.

We are far more likely to survive this season by utilising our current players to better effect than trying to buy our way out of trouble in January.

If his Summer buys are anything to go by hello Campionship again next season. I do believe he has truly lost the plot, if he genuinely believes our full backs are good enough or we dont need to strenghen in key areas wtf?

Why buy Simpson, Albrighton if you arent gonna give them a chance? His Summer buys were pee poor as well.

I know he is going to keep his cards close to his chest but based on this article the omens are not good.
