davieG Posted 8 January 2015 Posted 8 January 2015 4,000 explosive charges to be used in demolition of Leicester city council's former New Walk HQ on Sunday February 22 By danjmartin | Posted: January 08, 2015 New Walk Centre - nearly ready for demolition They have stood over Leicester centre for around 40 years but the tower blocks of the New Walk Centre former council headquarters will disappear from the skyline in a dozen seconds. The eight and thirteen storey buildings have been declared structurally unsound and last year the city council announced they would be demolished through a so-called controlled initiated collapse using explosive charges. Now further details of the operation to clear the defunct council complex have been released. The demolition has been scheduled to take place on the morning of Sunday February 22 with a provisional time of 10am. Merging Cultures Posted 9 January 2015 Posted 9 January 2015 My late gran worked at those offices for years. I used to brick it going up them as a kid. I've got good memories of visiting her there, then going into town. She used to spoil me with an ice cream soda at that Italian place that did pastries and things in town. What was the name of it?? Ah memories. Edit: Brucciani's!!!
stez Posted 9 January 2015 Posted 9 January 2015 Spent many a Saturday morning rushing down there with my council tax card, having scrabbled together that month's money, before they closed for the day. Happy days.
lavrentis Posted 9 January 2015 Posted 9 January 2015 Great news - one of the worst buildings in Leicester
Merging Cultures Posted 9 January 2015 Posted 9 January 2015 What are they going to build there ?. It would be interesting it if they could make it into a park/open air concert venue, and if they could pedestrianise the parts of Belvoir, King and Wellington Streets leading to market street and new walk. I'd go for a drink at a nice wine bar in New Walk and then head to a classical concert at the new venue... Also, next season when we win the Championship again, City could end their parade there. (just kidding of course!!)
davieG Posted 9 January 2015 Author Posted 9 January 2015 What are they going to build there ?. Shops, offices, apartments. Mayor Soulsby hasn't decided yet. I believe they have a shortlist of 2 or 3 developments.
hairy Posted 9 January 2015 Posted 9 January 2015 Shops, offices, apartments. Mayor Soulsby hasn't decided yet. I believe they have a shortlist of 2 or 3 developments. Nothing for a few years then. May be another public square for the homeless of New Walk
Bellend Sebastian Posted 9 January 2015 Posted 9 January 2015 I had to knock down my front garden wall a couple of months back. I was expecting it to take an hour or so, but the actual knocking down bit took about a minute. Extrapolating this up I reckon I could get the New Walk Centre down by lunchtime, although I may have to charge for a full day as it could go into the afternoon. If it's a Friday I always finish early, but I don't take the piss
Babylon Posted 9 January 2015 Posted 9 January 2015 Shops, offices, apartments. Mayor Soulsby hasn't decided yet. I believe they have a shortlist of 2 or 3 developments. Student flats no doubt.... perhaps a bicycle lane or 12.
Rincewind Posted 9 January 2015 Posted 9 January 2015 Empty office blocks at cheap rent sold to property developers who will redevelop and sell them off as luxury apartments.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 9 January 2015 Posted 9 January 2015 Student flats no doubt.... perhaps a bicycle lane or 12. If there's one thing Leicester needs, it's more student accommodation. Does it have any at present? I don't recall seeing much
stez Posted 9 January 2015 Posted 9 January 2015 Did anyone watch that super rich and us thing last night? At the development conference I spotted leicester touting their land for super high end developments
Soar Fox Posted 9 January 2015 Posted 9 January 2015 Hopefully they build a Tesco express there. We haven't got many in Leicester.
Rincewind Posted 9 January 2015 Posted 9 January 2015 Hopefully they build a Tesco express there. We haven't got many in Leicester. Not much chance of that. Tesco are closing a load and putting a halt to opening others. Maybe some Poundland and pawnbrokers.
