Guest MattP Posted 25 February 2015 Posted 25 February 2015 I'd say both sides bottled chances to win that match easier than it was won. But it turned into a classic. Pick Ireland to beat Zimbabwe and make the Pakistan match moot anyway - three wins should surely be enough to secure 4th place. How with Ireland? I can't think of anything, UAE just made the wrong decisions all the time from the 5th wicket be it catches, run out misses, field positions, not getting the last over from the spinner. The Pakistan match wouldn't be moot at all, all goes to that plan you'd probably have them fighting it out for 3rd-4th on RR with the West Indies, Ireland and Pakistan all on 3 wins each. Ireland only have a NRR of +0.338 with the UAE gone. I think they'll need to win both those matches to qualify with Pakistan having UAE, Zimbabwe and Ireland to play. Assuming the Windies beat the UAE they should be through with three as their NRR is +0.2202 already.

They should have been chasing a far lower target. Also O'Brien playing suicidally when he could just have hit the ball along the deck as hard and won it with five wickets and more balls to spare. As for the group, that's pretty open but I still think a narrow loss for the Irish v Pakistan coupled with a decent win against Zim would be enough to see them through given the amount of runs they've scored in their chases so far, provided they don't fall apart too horribly against the Saffers and Indians. Should be interesting to see how it all pans out.
Guest MattP Posted 25 February 2015 Posted 25 February 2015 Think that's harsh on O' Brien, the field was up and he was 50* off 24 - you have to keep going and the ball stopped in the pitch to be fair to him. Just noticed if the Windies grab another win it comes down to H2H in the Ireland V Pakistan game if they finish on three wins each. Could be a superb last group game.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 25 February 2015 Posted 25 February 2015 I wonder if the UAE team made a lot of money today?
leicsmac Posted 25 February 2015 Posted 25 February 2015 I wonder if the UAE team made a lot of money today? There's less obvious ways to make bungs. The crooked bookies tend to like spot betting rather than results betting now...so probably not.
Guest Posted 25 February 2015 Posted 25 February 2015 The UAE bowler Javed was superb. There was no fix here - they always struggle to get over the line in games. Ireland know how to win, UAE evidently dont despite them looking lively in both games thus far.
Corky Posted 25 February 2015 Posted 25 February 2015 Watched the World Cup Classics last night from 1999. Why didn't Donald run in that semi-final? Klusener was incredible, yet should've been caught with 15 to get. What a game that was, real shame the final was so one-sided.

Bet it haunts him most days as they'd have demolished Pakistan in the final much like the Aussies did. Not sure why they were looking to nab a quick single anyway with Lance biffing everything out of the park.. they had 3-4 balls or so left from memory?

Klusener hit two fours to level the scores, one needed from four balls, Donald was nearly run out the ball before, it was clear Klusener was going hit and run, don't know why Donald just didn't go as soon as Klusener hit it.
leicsmac Posted 26 February 2015 Posted 26 February 2015 Another all-Associate classic today, Afghanistan beating Scotland in the last over with nine wickets down and five needed off it. Good stuff. I wonder if it's not too late whether or not the ICC will reconsider the makeup of the next World Cup given how entertaining (and that's what sport should be about) the lesser known nations have been.
ealingfox Posted 26 February 2015 Posted 26 February 2015 Brilliant effort from the Afghan lower order considering they were 97-7!
Guest MattP Posted 26 February 2015 Posted 26 February 2015 Great to see the Afghans win that one, really really proud effort. Great shame we won't see matches like that in four years.

If I remember rightly that's what happened at the last World Cup. The restructured format was meant to come in for this one but they delayed it. I could be chatting complete shit mind.
Nalis Posted 26 February 2015 Posted 26 February 2015 Think this format has been the best so far regarding Cricket World Cups, should be maintained in my view.
chrishlcfc Posted 26 February 2015 Posted 26 February 2015 Really enjoyable watching the associate nations, all of the best games have involved them so far this world cup. The ICC need to drastically look at themselves if they do change the structure of the world cup, it will ruin these teams and the world cup would also be far less enjoyable without these teams.
Captain... Posted 27 February 2015 Posted 27 February 2015 I think an associate level pre tournament would be good, the top 2 qualifying for the World Cup while the test nations are playing their warm up matches. Would rather watch Scotland and Ireland go at it in a meaningful game than some of the warm up matches England and India served up.
Guest Posted 27 February 2015 Posted 27 February 2015 West Indies look a good bet @ 3/1 to beat S.Africa in this next game.
leicsmac Posted 27 February 2015 Posted 27 February 2015 West Indies look a good bet @ 3/1 to beat S.Africa in this next game. That is a decent shout, given the Saffers propensity for falling apart every so often (like they did against India). If WI bat first and get a decent total on the board, unless AB comes up with something special they could well crumble again.

It looked alright at 30-1 off 10 .. 400+ and yet another AB stunning knock
leicsmac Posted 27 February 2015 Posted 27 February 2015 It looked alright at 30-1 off 10 .. 400+ and yet another AB stunning knock Hence my use of the sentence part..."unless AB does something special." Which he has. Again. 261 off the last 20 overs is utterly insane. Record?
Wycombe Fox Posted 27 February 2015 Posted 27 February 2015 85 off the last 4 overs... 64 off the last two!!!! WTF??
Wycombe Fox Posted 27 February 2015 Posted 27 February 2015 The Windies only need another 299 off 23 overs with two wickets left. Could be a tight finish
leicsmac Posted 27 February 2015 Posted 27 February 2015 That defeat has really savaged the Windies run rate after they'd had two good performances to boost it up. It's going to be interesting to see how close they, Pakistan and Ireland are when the groups are finished.
Guest MattP Posted 27 February 2015 Posted 27 February 2015 Windies run rate goes from over +2 to minus AB is just a freak, what a cricketer.
