leicsmac Posted 22 August 2015 Posted 22 August 2015 Take a bow Lyth, officially the worst opener is Ashes history Don't you remember the 90's? Or more recently, Carberry?
marko Posted 23 August 2015 Posted 23 August 2015 Sigh! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/article-3208147/BT-Sport-grab-2017-18-Ashes-TV-rights-rivals-Sky-Sports-350m-coup.html
Grandad. Posted 23 August 2015 Posted 23 August 2015 Don't you remember the 90's? Or more recently, Carberry? How can you possibly compare Carberry to Lyth? Lyth is terrible compared to him. Also pretty sure Carberry was Englands second top run scorer on that disaster tour. Lyth really shouldn't play Test Cricket for England again. Hales to come in for me.
Guest MattP Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 BT Sport? That is criminal, what are the ECB doing? Sky's cricket coverage is the greatest sporting coverage in the World.
Guest MattP Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 Comparison with Lyth and Carberry is harsh. Carberry was on a hiding to nothing and still performed far better. Big problem we have is Lyth is the best county opener by a mile, I have no idea who we bring in to replace him as they are all going to struggle against pace.
Nick Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 Hales has to get a chance I'd love to see Barry out there too.

Sky's cricket coverage is the greatest sporting coverage in the World. so its all been confirmed now there, money clearly talks doesnt it, the only hope for it being on BT Sport is i hope they get the TMS guy to do the comms and everything since BT Sport and the BBC seem to be bed buddies. I have to again with you there Carberry didnt really get much of a chance at all he way dropped harshly imo, i thought Nick Compton did well, he played well on that New Zealand tour a good few years back, While Lyth is without doubt the best opener in county cricket he isnt test standard tbh. and hopefully we wont' see him opening the batting for england, as he's been pretty dire every game batting wise. as The People's hero said Alex Hales would be a good contender imo, he's had international experience in ODI's and T20's and i think his aggressive style would compliment Cook's, and he's done reasonably well in the County Championship this season too

Yeah, perhaps I'm being a bit harsh on Carberry there, especially when you look back through this thread and I was encouraging the ECB to give him more time. For what it's worth we seem to have gone through a plethora of openers since Strauss knocked it on the head, and perhaps we've chopped and changed them too quickly. Compton showed promise but he's too much like Cook - we need an aggressive opener to balance Cooks more circumspect style. The obvious choice is Hales, but he's going to need time and backing over that time, rather than barracking if he makes a quickfire 20/30 and gets out a few times.
Captain... Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 We've just lost the ability to handle scoreboard pressure, we need to be able to bat second when they have made a decent score, 480 is above average, but not massive, and in such circumstances especially with bad weather on it's way and the series won, you just go out and play risk free cricket, back to basics learn how to leave the ball, block anything hitting the stumps and put away the bad balls. We just needed one partnership in the first innings and this would have been a draw and we would have had a comfortable 3-1 win, now despite we winning we have some big question marks over our batting and bowling. As for Lyth, there is just nothing positive to be taken from his batting this series. Sometimes as an opener when the ball is new there is nothing you can do, but so many of his wickets were just given away, he didn't score runs, he didn't occupy the crease, he just caused pressure on the number 3. He batted under pressure, pressure free, start of the match, when the match was all but won and just couldn't do it once. Back to county cricket, get him to work on his batting, send him to Australia or New Zealand over the winter and look again next summer. In the meantime someone else deserves a chance, if it is Hales or someone else, I don't care at the moment Lyth is just a free wicket at the start of the innings.
Guest MattP Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 Hales will probably get his chance now but he's never going to make a test batsman in a million years, if people though Robson had technique problems at this level just wait for Hales. He's gets clean bowled regularly from medium pacers with a red ball.

He's gets clean bowled regularly from medium pacers with a red ball. Let's see how he does in the ODIs, I don't know if he would be suited to the conditions in the UAE for the Pakistan tour, but we are running out of options for openers and if we go to South Africa with an untried partner for Cook then that could be a chastening tour against the best team in the world. People have spoken about Ali as opening in the UAE, because of the conditions, but that doesn't help us in the long run, I can see Root getting promoted to the top of the order again, he was probably Cook's best partner out of those that have been tried: Compton, Carberry, Robson, Lyth, Trott.
Guest MattP Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 He'll probably do ok in the ODI'S, the white ball does very little over here these days. It's a massive problem we have. To think some wanted Cook dropped a while back!
fuchsntf Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 I would prefer to give Lythe, another chance, for the winter tour, but taking Hales/Taylor also. Lythe did face the worlds strongest bowling attack backed up by newby Marsh. Going around the counties guessing once again is IMO is just chasing around for sake, sake alone. If Hales doesnt break in where do we go then. No for me , Lythe should have 2 tests in the UAE, its simply a different challenge. Rashid still should play in all 3 tests in the U AE against Pakistan.
Captain... Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 Lyth had 9 innings and didn't do anything of note in any of them, Australia do not have the best attack in the world, South Africa are better and I would say our attack is better too. In 9 innings, some of them completely pressure free, you need to do something other than gift your wicket 9 times. I'm not saying Luth's career is over but we will be facing the best team in the world soon enough and we need someone to partner cook, and that isn't Lyth.
Grandad. Posted 24 August 2015 Posted 24 August 2015 Can anyone explain to me why Bairstow isn't in the ODI squad?
Bobby Hundreds Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 He'll probably do ok in the ODI'S, the white ball does very little over here these days. Do we use white dukes for international ODIs or are white kookaburras the universal short format choice?
marko Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 Do we use white dukes for international ODIs or are white kookaburras the universal short format choice? White Kokkaburra. Goodness knows why they're still used though. They go soft quickly (hence the two new balls at the start of the innings) and the red Kookaburra used in Tests in Australia might as well be substituted for a tangerine it goes that soft in the middle overs.
Captain... Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 I find the fact different balls are used to be crazy, the condition of the ball is crucial and the way the Duke ball acts in English conditions is so different to how the Kookaburra acts in the same conditions. It just makes it such an advantage to be the home team if you are using a different ball to what the opposition are used to.
Guest MattP Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 The Aussies are going to be using the duke ball in domestic cricket before they come over here next time.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 25 August 2015 Posted 25 August 2015 I think we should try playing on a motorway before the next away Ashes.
Voll Blau Posted 28 August 2015 Posted 28 August 2015 Nice interview with Dietmar Hamann about his love of cricket... http://www.thecricketmonthly.com/story/895977/-i-loved-watching-freddie-and-kallis
Guest MattP Posted 28 August 2015 Posted 28 August 2015 Interesting, always wondered how the Germans would fair at cricket. Would be pure efficiency I imagine, a 2.50 RR with bat and ball. Natwest have emailed me, won some tickets for the T20 on Monday, hope the weather is nice.
