marko Posted 13 October 2015 Posted 13 October 2015 Bell shells another dolly! He owes us a few runs this Test.
surrifox Posted 13 October 2015 Posted 13 October 2015 Keeping up the close catching bungles that became an issue against NZ and Aussies
Guest MattP Posted 13 October 2015 Posted 13 October 2015 The second one from Bell was an absolute shocker, proper dolly. First hour tomorrow is crucial.
Corky Posted 13 October 2015 Posted 13 October 2015 The seam bowlers have been tremendous today, don't deserve the score they are facing. Must be absolutely soul destroying bowling on a pitch like this, massive respect for their endeavours. This is a hell of a task, possibly the most difficult tour given the weather and the lack of people. If we escape with a series draw we'll have done brilliantly.
Alexikokopops Posted 14 October 2015 Posted 14 October 2015 I know it's early but you can see why the selectors took so long to get Rashid in. Looks well out his depth and bowls so many rank balls it's impossible for him to hold down an end. Swann just made the point on TMS that a lot of his wickets came at the end of the first innings and then doing the business in the second innings. I'm going to be patient, but I think that's largely because I like the idea of England having a leg spinner rather than any particular faith.
Guest MattP Posted 14 October 2015 Posted 14 October 2015 This has been absolutely abysmal today. Have we ever had two spinners in a side both go 0-100 in one innings? Rashid has given up, coming round the wicket to right handers.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 14 October 2015 Posted 14 October 2015 Going to the UAE never seems like a real tour, has a Lions feel about it.
Voll Blau Posted 14 October 2015 Posted 14 October 2015 Going to the UAE never seems like a real tour, has a Lions feel about it. Vaughan's suggesting Pakistan's home series should be moved to Australian outgrounds, not the worst shout really. Would throw USA/Canada into that mix if suitable stadia could be found.
Captain... Posted 14 October 2015 Posted 14 October 2015 We always knew it was going to be tough, but it is important here to not crumble under scoreboard pressure like we have done so often recently, being 500+ runs down should be par for the course in test cricket and not cause for total panic.

A victory now might be nigh on impossible but a draw is still achievable. Slow play and stay out as long as possible, avoid the follow on and let the clock take the victory away from them.
Guest MattP Posted 14 October 2015 Posted 14 October 2015 Glad Cook took Rashid out of the attack before he could surpass the worst ever debut record, would have been an unnecessary distraction for him. Vaughan's suggesting Pakistan's home series should be moved to Australian outgrounds, not the worst shout really. Would throw USA/Canada into that mix if suitable stadia could be found. They have to play near home, you can't expect people to travel from Pakistan to Canada or Australia, I know the ground is empty now but it would be if this was in Lahore, it will be full again when the ODI's start. Par for the course on this pitch for sure, problem is our line up isn't really one I can see batting out three days, players like Buttler, Stokes, Ali, Bairstow all like to score quickly and with that comes the risk of getting out even on docile pitches. I think we'll need a Cook 150* to give us a chance.

Doesn't really matter where in the world you are at times you are going to concede a lot of runs in the first innings, we just have to accept and take pressure off ourselves by just playing cricket and steadily accumulating runs. If we crumble here we will be fvcked for the rest of the series, Pakistan will continue to play risk free slow accumulation batting, knowing that we can't cope under pressure in these conditions, a comfortable draw here means that in the next test Pakistan will think they need to be a bit more aggressive with the bat, score a bit quicker to give themselves more time to bowl us out and in doing so will hopefully take a few more risks. Massive innings
Guest MattP Posted 14 October 2015 Posted 14 October 2015 Here's Ali's big test now, facing Wahab and you imagine he'll be getting plenty of short stuff.

It's a lot harder to do though when the opposition have 500+ on the board, you are effectively out the game so team who has batted can set up extremely aggressive fields that you simply can't. Pitches like this are no good for cricket really, I almost want to agree with Ponting's idea that the visiting side chooses when you see a surface where batting first pretty much means you'll either win or draw providing you don't do something stupid, our seamers bowled brilliantly for the majority of that innings and they still made a declaration with over 500 on the board, that shouldn't happen. It is a massive innings and from what I've seen already we should be ok, you have to do something quite daft to get out on this unless this Babar is a top notch spinner. Misbah must be fuming they have only left him with one slow bowler.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 14 October 2015 Posted 14 October 2015 Exactly what we needed that. Well done Mo & Cooky!

I'd imagine there's a reasonable cricket-supporting expat population from both sides in all three of the countries mentioned? Worth a punt to see if it could be sustainable there surely?

Worth a punt to see if it could be sustainable there surely? I have no idea to be honest but I'm against the principle of it full stop, if we somehow had to move I'd expect us to be playing in France or something rather than Australia or the USA because we have a big ex-pat population. It also wouldn't be fair on the team, Pakistan do need home advantage, they bring their players up on dust bowls, to then have them playing at home on fast bouncy pitches suiting their opponents really wouldn't be right.

Captain... Posted 15 October 2015 Posted 15 October 2015 Good to see a bit of application from the top order, do to Pakistan what they did to us, play risk free shots and grind them down, this is a big part of test cricket and crumbling under scoreboard pressure is something we do far too often.
Voll Blau Posted 15 October 2015 Posted 15 October 2015 Cook breaking/equalling a few records already this morning. Keep forgetting he's only 30.
Guest MattP Posted 15 October 2015 Posted 15 October 2015 Plenty more to come hopefully, delighted to see this monkey off his back. I don't think it will be his last of the series.
Ross-Kemp Posted 15 October 2015 Posted 15 October 2015 Cook breaking/equalling a few records already this morning. Keep forgetting he's only 30.Absolutely astonishing really.1000 runs in a calendar year 10th 100 as captain (only Gooch has more with 11) 8th century in Asia (equal with Kallis for overseas batsmen)
