Worst Away Days

Recommended Posts

Ipswich 2010

It was fvcking freezing, the game was not entertaining, the pitch was a farce, the delays meant I had to stand in the fvcking freezing weather even longer, we were crap and the snow was up to my ankles afterwards.

Single file traffic on the A14 for a long, long way. Not fun and memorable for totally the wrong reasons.

I wanted the game to end so badly, I didn't give two hoots about the match, they should've just given them the win and be done with it. Awful.

Also Portsmouth 2010. We'd been there three days previous and won in the cup and promptly folded like a pack of cards losing 6-1. Then it was back home before another long-ass journey to Norwich four days later. What a seven days of away games that was!

Generally always a good day out following City regardless of result but some bad games on the pitch from memory:

Pompey 6-1 on the Friday night.

Middlesbrough 6-0.

Wolves 4-3.

Sheff Wed 7-1.

Newcastle 7-1.

Stoke relegation game.

Chelsea 97 in cup.

Burnley called off new years.

Reading called off new years.

I may have dreamed this, but in that game weren't we 7-0 down and then someone (Bobby Davison?) got a a consolation goal, and the Leicester end went mental?

I hardly ever go to away games but I managed to go the rained off Burnley one

Watford away. Cardiff away.

Cardiff away was one of my favourites. We were down and out at 2-0, 3 goals in 25 minutes either side of the break to storm into the lead.

It's not the end result but what happens in the game that makes it for me.

I've actually never seen us get spanked away from home, which is good.

However, one of the worst, most boring away games I've ever been to was when we drew 0-0 with Hull a couple of seasons ago (the Watford play-off year) on Boxing Day. Nothing happened in the game and it was absolutely freezing.

Watford away is the worst I've ever felt coming out of a ground.

Doncaster away in the JPT in the rain was dreadful.

Sheff Wed away a number of years ago was awful too, think we lost 2-1. our whole end sat down and we barely sang one song. I took my Villa mate with me and I felt embarassed at our display on and off the pitch.

Pompey 6-1 and the 5-1 at Forest.

Alongside the 6-1 at Pompey, I also watched us spanked 6-1 on Boxing Day at Highbury with a noon kick-off.

Sousa's first league game at Palace. We lost 3-2. We were 3-0 by half-time. Got very near to result. I had to travel by Fox Travel due to a broken wrist. We got home at 1am as the M25 had closed in our direction and I was surrounded by bored teenagers. Brighton when we first visited too at the new ground and making it home in the snow was a hairy one. The losses at Peterborough were always sh*t days.

Remember a couple of thrashings away at Man City in the Cup. One I was next to a fat Barry Fry lookalike. Also had a horrendous hangover which didn't help matters.

Getting beat 4-0 away at Forest as well in 94. On the way up there "I think we can turn them over today. Full strength side out finally" Utterly miserable game.

Obviously losing 5-1 at Forest.

To the OP - that trip to Sheffield was class! Yeah the result was poor but the atmosphere that day was sensational for a side in our position. Decent walk back to the train station too..: 'sit down, if you love Leicester'

Agree on both points.

Surprised so few have mentioned Barnsley away a few years back. Absolutely woeful - worst performance from an NP team I've seen.

Contrastingly, I've never seen a better and more complete away performance than the 3-0 (i think) win there last season. Absolutely dominated from beginning to end and could have scored more.

Yeah, Barnsley away is the worst game I've been to, not the most painful (that's a different thing I think) but the worst in terms of the quality of the game.

The booing at half time was fully deserved. It wasn't just one of those dull groans you sometimes get - there was genuine anger throughout the away end who had been massively let down by their team. Played off the park by a poor side and should've conceded at least four.

It was gallows humour by the end; the song over the tannoy at full-time whistle still stays with me. Bob Marley, Don't Worry About A Thing. It proved to be the case eventually.

Agreed.

I looked at that performance and, whilst I'd never wanted Pearson out and backed him fully, seriously wondered how on earth he could turn that round. Easily the most disgraceful performance I've seen from a Leicester side as it had nothing to do with being out-classed or the opposition playing well, it was all about a lack of effort.

The cancelled Burnley game on news years day.

Any game I was made to sit down at when our away fans were dog shit from about 03-06. Our ends used to be terrible! Remember Crewe away In 05 when it was the ONLY person standing up, to then have a steward come and tap me on the shoulder and tell me to sit! lol crazy to imagine that now.

Having to sit down has literally ruined whole days for me, even if we've won!

Hasn't happened for about 8 years though!

Is that really the case? League One was my first year of being a regular at aways and other than the odd one I don't remember our ends being like that. Think it happened at Plymouth in 09/10. That can be put up there as a shit away. It was beyond dull.

Worst away game (or most memorbale).....portsmouth vs leicester 96. Was only 15 at the time, and my friends and I were drinking 20/20 at the park the night before, decided we would all go to the furtherest away game of the season. Woke up at 8am saturday, rang all around but everyone had bottled it!

Decided to go on my own, didnt realise had to go via london on the train, tried to bump the train for free, but a sharp eyed indian conductor caught me and i stupidly said single to luton, (return was about same price) cost me £13. He promptly chucked me off at luton. Decided had enough and decided to go round luton, nearly got mugged within ten minutes, so ran back to the station and jumped on the next train to london for free.

Had to firstly work out the underground, then get a train from paddington to portsmouth which me cost a further £10 return, by this time i had nearly ran out of money. Funnily enough going there and back i never saw another leicester fan!

Once at the ground, i didnt have enough money to go into the away end, so I went in the portsmouth part that was next to the leicester fans which cost me £5. Didnt realise this was the 6.57 crew section, and i was surrounded by some of the roughest guys i have ever met, the songs that they sang about neil lewis, make sol campbells songs sound like a lullaby!

They were all drinking bought in cans of stella and straight vodka and smoking pot on the terrace and before long one of the old boys offers me vodka. The moment i replied they clocked my accent, i thought i was a goner...but they seemed pretty impressed that i had come here on my own. However affer smoking pot for only the second time in my life and drinking straight vodka with no food, i about pulled a whitey. I remember pompey scoring a last minute winner and thought the crush was going make me puke everywhere.

My plan was to ask a leicester fan for a lift home, as all i possessed was a return ticket back to london and had three pound left. But i got caught up in brawl outside between the fans and found i was stuck with my new 6.57 crew who the police escorted back into the town centre.....

Cut along story short, i had to bump the train journey home from london to leicester by hiding in the toliets, with the train conductor banging on the door trying to get me out.

When i eventually arrived in leicester had to walk to st mags only to find i had missed my last bus, as it was about 11pm, and my folks lived in south leicestershire and they had gone out. So i had then walk in the fosse park direction and had to hitch hike down the m1 to the next junction and walk the last three miles home, arriving back at 2am!

The one thing i remember on the train being so dehydrated from drinking and smoking with the ponpey guys, but couldnt leave the toilets, so had to drink that rancid water from the tap!

Safe to say never been back to portsmouth since!

What amuses me about the Barnsley game is that we turned up next week and played a bit of a blinder. Brighton were the form team in the division at the time and were playing some excellent stuff.

Yet, shite as we had been, I thought we were the better team and deserved to win. Remarkable upturn in performance, I was extremely impressed by the players that day.
