Babylon Posted 16 March 2015 Posted 16 March 2015 Would anyone take Poyet if Sunderland get rid? He like Lambert would be damaged goods at the moment. I'd prefer someone who is doing well elsewhere, rather than someone who is failing.
nettle Posted 16 March 2015 Posted 16 March 2015 It does make me laugh that there are so many people who slaughter Pearson about everything... then trot out stuff like this themselves. What the hell has Glen Hoddle done in the last decade to warrant getting one more job, let alone give people confidence he could be good at it. I'd see how the championship season pans out and who goes up / stays down. Let's stick with Pearson then your obviously happy watching boring negative football. Hoddle was just a suggestion it won't happen anyway.
Guest MattP Posted 16 March 2015 Posted 16 March 2015 Would anyone take Poyet if Sunderland get rid? Did pretty well with Brighton and had a tough job on at Sunderland. I remember reading an article from The Secret Footballer basically saying there's a culture problem at Sunderland and until they have a complete clear out it will keep on seeing them struggling regardless of who is in charge. Looking around at who else is available, I think we could do a lot worse. Experienced at Championship level, has led a promotion campaign, is still relatively young and has Premier League experience. Given our fans can't tolerate our manager calling a reporter a **** I doubt they are going to have much patience with a bloke who shits on the oppositions floor when things go badly.
Babylon Posted 16 March 2015 Posted 16 March 2015 Let's stick with Pearson then your obviously happy watching boring negative football. Hoddle was just a suggestion it won't happen anyway. Yeah that's what I said isn't it. I could just post a picture of last years table to disprove some of that also. It won't happen because he's done nothing in football for a very long time.

I still hope it's Mick McCarthy just to see the faces of those that don't like Pearson's personality. Dyche So long as we can get Eddie Howe to sign all the players for him.

Guest Sharpe's Fox Posted 16 March 2015 Posted 16 March 2015 Looking at the CV's of the candidates mentioned in this thread so far I've made the following ranking list: 1) Pep Guardiola 2) Big Sam 3) Nigel Pearson Seems like the only realistic option is that bloke Nigel Pearson who has had 3 full seasons in the Championship and 3 top 6 finishes. Get him in!
Ollie93 Posted 16 March 2015 Posted 16 March 2015 Just wondering why anyone would want Poyet / Lambert? Poyets managing a side who are clearly struggling to say up, if he gets sacked / they get relegated, he will be low on confidence and bring a negative attitude to the club? As for Lambert, well we saw what he did at Villa.
Freeman's Wharfer Posted 16 March 2015 Posted 16 March 2015 Dyche I said this on Saturday. Done a great job in The Championship and very well in The Prem. I don't like him but if he can bring success that will soon be forgotten. Throw enough money at Burnley then we'll have his ear. Offer him the superior resources, finances and infrastructure that we have and I think he'd come.
Robin JD Popley Posted 16 March 2015 Posted 16 March 2015 For what it is worth re Lambert, he was interviewed for the job whilst Milan was our Chairman and lost out to Nigel despite being the early frontrunner. Don't get me wrong though, think the bloke achieved wonders at Norwich and if he could recreate that form compared to the last 15 months or so of his tenure with Villa, because it wasn't always as bad as that (played some good stuff in his early days there), then he'd be a good bet but I am inclined to agree with Babs - probably too soon after what happened down the road at Villa Park. Another left of field candidate is Oscar (who used to Manage Brighton). Made us look bang average twice last season - okay, on one of those occassions our squad were more than merry but, nevertheless, they ran rings round us in both games. Only problem again is he left Watford for health reasons so perhaps isn't ready to have a pop. You all know how bitterly dissapointed I was when we bucked the opportunity to go for Sherwood during NP's 'fake' sacking and now look at what he is doing at Villa - a resurgance and a FA Cup Semi Final at Wembley. Still may yet come to nothing but still, a damn sight better than our situation. Rowett for me though could be a good bet long term. An ex player, good footballing brain but sadly missed the boat again as he has just gone to Brum and would he want to leave so soon after going there? Lennon always gets a mention, Laudrup another person I'd take. OGS if he could recreate what he did in Norway...remember us all laughing at McClaren when he went to Derby but looking at his overseas record in Germany with Wolfsburg and even in the UK with Boro, now makes it look like a sound appointment. Or we could go down the Pochettino route - an unknown before Saints and turned them into a very good side before now doing the same thing with Spurs seemingly. Finally, there is the Cambiasso option. My point is, it isn't as bad as people make out and Nigel is not irreplaceable. A short term replacement may be best for now but long term there will be SOMEONE who can rejuvinate us and that person is not Nigel Pearson - even for the Championship.
Danno Posted 16 March 2015 Posted 16 March 2015 I would actually be chuffed if we got Paul Lambert, performed a miracle at Norwich and he knows how to keep a team in the Premier League. He would be a massive improvement on Pearson, get him in!Hahahahahahahahhahaha
kingfox Posted 16 March 2015 Posted 16 March 2015 Few other names... Paul Clement - About time he stepped into proper management Sascha Lewandowski - Helped Leverkusen on two occasions Gaizka Garitano - Doing well with Eibar in Spain Then there is legendary players like Edgar Davids & Clarence Seedorf

The suggestion's you have come up with here all come with if's buts and maybe's. Rowett = Did okay with Burton but missed out on promotion, Jimmy Floyd has came in and took them to a new level. Started off on fire at Brum but once new manager syndrome has wore off has only won 2 in 10, not exactly setting the world alight. Lennon = Brilliant at Celtic, again similar to Rowett did okay to start at Bolton, but their form has tailed off and with the strength of their squad should be doing better than winning 3 in the last 10. Laudrup = Would be a good appointment, but big question marks as to his desire to manager in the nitty gritty of the Championship when he is earning billions out in the UAE. OGS = Proved not good enough for the Prem, and was floundering in the Championship when he was replaced. Would be a huge gamble. McClaren = Bottling promotion with Derby for a 2nd time in a row. With their current form they might even miss out on the play offs. Any Foreigner = Very few foreign managers do well in the Championship because it is the most competitive and combative in the world. Would be a huge gamble and could lead us to a Watford situation where they chop and change every 3 months. Cambiasso = Good players rarely make good managers. Is he even qualified. So all the names in the mix come with risks, probably bigger risks than sticking with a manager who in every full season at the club has either got us promoted or in the play offs. Only man I would take over Pearson is Big Sam, but again at his age would he take a Championship job with his CV he can demand a prem or European job. The only way I would get rid of Pearson is if we play the way we did against Hull and go down with a whimper rather than a fight.

For the record, I don't want McClaren - his name was more of a comparison job to OGS but he is an interesting one. People say that, 'Oh he hasn't done jack yet'. That man won the Norweigan league with a side no better than Bristol Rovers against teams who regularly qualify for Europe. He's not cack - I just think he worked for a despot in Vincent Tan who probably didn't make his first experience of management in England a very pleasant one. Poor Russell Slade, a man I've often admired for his work in the lower leagues has found that out too by going there. Tan is a bigger spanner than you'd find in a tool box... No one in their right mind would have picked Pearson for the job in 2008 so let's not kid ourselves everyone. No one knows what anyone can achieve until they've been given a chance (which Nigel has been given in abundance).

The only way I would get rid of Pearson is if we play the way we did against Hull and go down with a whimper rather than a fight. I think the problem with all of this is that we're looking primarily at known quantities, proven names. Pearson was an unknown quantity when he came, so were O'Neill, Little, Adams in the second tier. Our 'established' managers have often struggled - be it Pleat, Sven, Bassett or Sousa. And looking at managers who win promotion over recent years, they're usually guys who've never done it before. Achievements are rarely replicated, especially among relegated sides. It's a big assumption to say that Pearson will replicate his past achievements, especially with the loss in confidence of players (both in themselves and, almost certainly, in him) and the disintegration of partnerships which were central to our promotion. And, if we one day wish to get to the PL and stay there, we'd be going up with a manager who players, fans and board could have little confidence in. Do you propose we give him a chance to somehow reproduce something which took him three attempts last time at the first time of asking, and fire him as soon as we get up, or give him an extremely limited period of time to show that he's learnt (even though there's no evidence that he's got any better at doing his job during the season)? It's hardly a long-termist approach. I'm not saying that this is your view, but do you see my point? We could move Pearson out and give an unknown quantity a chance to learn now, rather than at the start of next season. Allow them to get that PL experience that you can't buy when you're an aspiring Championship club, allow them to assess the squad in the process. Or we could wait, but even if we wait the best type of appointment may well be somebody whose name doesn't leap off the page. The same happened when we (rightly) sacked Pleat, Taylor, Levein, Allen, Holloway, Sousa and Sven. We knew that we had a manager in charge who couldn't deliver what we wanted him to deliver. Sat where we are now, it should be clearer than ever that we need a man in who has a level chance of forging a side which can stay up in this league. Bearing in mind that forming a side capable of survival begins before you get promoted, and that Pearson has neither achieved this nor made adequate additions / decisions to improve our chances, have we seen anything to suggest Pearson is that man? Essentially it boils down to the could-be-good-enough manager Vs. the almost-certainly-never-going-to-be-good-enough manager. And when we've come to the conclusion, historically, that a manager isn't going to be good enough and moved him on, it has more often than not worked out for us (there are exceptions, needless to say). That's not to say we'll get it right this time, just that we'll at least be giving ourselves a chance of bringing in a guy who can succeed where Pearson appears incapable.
kingfox Posted 16 March 2015 Posted 16 March 2015 No one in their right mind would have picked Pearson for the job in 2008 so let's not kid ourselves everyone. No one knows what anyone can achieve until they've been given a chance (which Nigel has been given in abundance). Good point Robin. After Holloway got his marching orders, of names listed I bet nobody picked out Nigel Pearson, quite frankly back then he himself was a massive gamble. Who would have thought Southampton would of appointed Pochettino, look at the Championship this season Jokanovic at Watford, Karanka at Middlesbrough and Neil at Norwich bet neutrals yet alone their own fans didn't expect them to be appointed, now look at how well all three have done, three gambles that are paying off.
Jfox Posted 16 March 2015 Posted 16 March 2015 If we're looking for someone who knows how to do well in the championship then we might as well stick with Pearson, if not get Lambert in. Young up and coming managers are fine, but you have to give them time and not jump on their backs if we finish 9th in their first season etc. If you want a quick fix and possibly and instant return to the premier league then someone who knows how to get out of the division is the way forward. Equally I don't think a big name, such as Sven will do well either, as with Pearce at Forest. Most people won't like it but IMO if we have Pearson, Lambert, McCarthy or the likes in charge we'll come straight back up. But who knows, a gamble on someone might pay off, but if it doesn't then its back to square one.
Hirsty The Blue 94 Posted 16 March 2015 Posted 16 March 2015 That's a fair enough appraisal, I know most of them are all ifs, buts and maybes but that is all we can do but speculate. No one knows what anyone can achieve until they've been given a chance (which Nigel has been given in abundance). I agree that gambles sometimes pay off, but I don't think the situation is quite comparable to when Pearson came here originally. At that time we needed a completely fresh start, to rip it up and start again as the majority of the squad were simply garbage. This time out if (and when) we get relegated, we still have the nucleus of what we know is a good side at Championship level. The decision at the end of the season is probably the biggest managerial one in our clubs managerial history in recent years. The gamble could pay off and we get a complete unknown quantity in who does fantastically. Equally though it could be a disaster, and we could make an appointment that puts us back years in our progress as a club. But I think the lesser gamble would be to allow Pearson to have next season to try to get us back in the Premier League, with his record he is likely to be able to make us competitive at the top end of the Championship. I guess it comes down to whether you believe Pearson will learn from this experience, and I'm inclined to believe he will considering that in the past he has faced massive set backs here and rallied again to take us to the next level each time. I wouldn't say anyone is wrong though if they believe that he isn't the man for the job. What I will defend him against is the people who just have a personal vendetta against the man and everything he does and the disrespect shown to him despite achieving our greatest success in near on 20 years.
Gerard Posted 16 March 2015 Posted 16 March 2015 I certainly don't want to see failed managers like Poyet or Lambert. I've done a bit of research and how about Marcelo Gallardo? He's young manager and takes inspiration from Marcelo Bielsa who is a mentor to Diego Simeone and Mauricio Pochettino He's successful at River Plate at the moment earning about £18,000 a week. Doubling his wages and the chance to make a name for himself in Europe could be appealing to him.
