An Away Move

How many new fans have we attracted this season? And how much is it worth?

Recommended Posts

On the club's FB post about Vardy signing the new deal I was really struck by just how many people from countries all over the world were posting saying things like "I am from Nigeria/Malaysia/etc., and Leicester are now my team!"

Got me thinking about about the cost benefits to our club as result of this fairytale season. You just can't buy the world exposure we are getting now all over the globe! Everyone loves an underdog coming good! It might be the perfect way to fall in love with a club and the beginning of something lasting, no?

How much do we estimate this season will be worth when it translates into new shirts, etc., etc.?

***Oops! How do we edit thread titles? The 'And' was meant to say 'And how much is it worth?'

I think most are not 'supporting' Leicester for getting behind the underdog, it's because Leicester are top of the league and have global exposure because of it. Regardless of it being Leicester City or Chelsea, it happens all the time. Nothing new in proffesional sports. Seeing LA Lakers fans suddenly change jerseys to a Miami Heat one, then a Cleveland Cavaliers jersey is actually pretty common.

Should have seen the amount of people wearing Golden State Warriors caps in New England after last year's finals.

People saying: "I'm a big fan of Jimmy Vardi, go Foxes!" to me that isn't supporting Leicester..

Those that have a connection on the world circuit, the Algerian and French fans for Mahrez, the Argentines for Ulloa, Belgians for Wasil, fair play to them for taking time out of supporting their own clubs to get behind Leicester.

As for costs, the TV deals have a much bigger impact, merchandise isn't a major part of the clubs income, though theres no doubt that no matter where we finish this year sales will probably double, perhaps triple for overseas supporters.

Case in point:

Regardless, the more the merrier. Any success this club achieves will be valued accordingly by any given fan or plastic.

my biggest scalp is a Canadian national of German descent  now living in Vietnam who WAS working in Concord.

I live in north Northants and it seems everyone over here now supports City, especially the younger generation.

City have always been reasonably popular in Corby but with Rangers being demoted and the Old Firm rivalry not being what it was, there seems to be loads more interest now. When I moved this way 7 years ago it was a mix of City, Celtic, Rangers, Villa and your usual Liverpool / Arsenal/ Man U but in the last 5 years City's popularity has skyrocketed.

The most valuable thing is hopefully the 6/7/8 year olds in the local area who may have been swayed by the 'BIG' clubs in recent years who will now surely choose us as their team. They're the ones who'll be still around when things aren't going so well.

I'm from America, and I think alot of it (at least here) is people are pulling for the underdog..  It's awesome, especially when Leicester are up against clubs that essentially buy their way to trophies.  Even my friends who support bigger teams still would love to see Leicester win it all.  I don't know anyone who roots against a good Cinderella story.  To your point, if United were in the same spot right now, they might pick up a few "fairweather" fans, but nothing compared to the legions of people are now faithfully following LC

Up til now, it hasn't really been fair to say "any team can win the league".  Because that's not exactly true-- up til now only your United's, City's, Arsenals, Chelsea's, etc really had a chance.  This is showing that a team can go from the brink of relegation to champions of the most popular league in the world in 1 year.  This story (especially after the City win) has been getting more and more attention in America (granted soccer doesn't get a ton of attention to begin with here, but the circles that do follow it are greatly promoting Leicester), to the point where people are saying that this could potentially be the biggest story in the history of the sport- which I believe to be true

I've said before that the potential local catchment area for a successful LCFC is gigantic.

We're not only a one club city, but a one club county. For a club of our stature, that must be very rare. If Leicester and Leicestershire aren't enough, there's the surrounding areas such as Northants (somebody has already mentioned our significant following in Corby), Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire. All of those counties with a combined population of not far off a million and our nearest rival in all of the above counties is Peterborough United.

If we can become a regular top 10 team, never mind one competing for Europe, our local growth in support alone would mean that the stadium expansion would go from the drawing board to urgent.

Just wanted to say good luck for the rest of the season and hope you put all these big high spending clubs to the sword and win the championship with games in hand

from Bristol Rovers fans in the Midlands

That is very kind of you.

Can I say what a wonderful memory I have from our fixture with you in league one at the walkers as it was then, when you gave the most wonderful rendition of "goodnight Irene".

You put a lot if so called big teams that have come here since to shame that night with your marvellous vocal support.

Attracting nationwide and global support can only be a good thing for our club!

I'm at university away from Leicester, but when I go home or go on social media, it's all about Leicester. Yep, I could say to those people "where were you in League 1 when we only filled half the stadium?". I prefer to embrace it and embrace the togetherness that this has brought to our city. You can sense everyone is behind our team and even non-Leicester fans at my university are always rooting for us!

Personally, having given up my season ticket because of university it's now annoying that getting a ticket for a home game is very hard. Wish the club would give priority to fans who had season tickets when we got relegated and/or League 1, but that's an ideal world.

It makes me proud wearing my shirt around university - people say how long I have supported them and I always say through the shit teams etc. Regardless of where our new support comes from, us "propa'" Leicester fans should not be resentful that they've suddenly jumped on the bandwagon. (not saying anyone is!)

I just can't believe the transition this club is making and I'm sure we'll continue to do so. Every time someone mentions LCFC to me, my face just brights up. Fantastic times we are experiencing at the moment!  :scarf:

Well we've nicked 80% of Chelsea fans, about 60% of Man City fans after Saturday and about 90% of every other teams fans in the Prem.

I am not here for life and i will stop watching leicester as soon as Mahrez leave the club.

I think it's so called fan like you that kept this club down for so long.

You sound like a gang member not a football club fan.
